McLaren\u2019s Lando Norris extended his lead in the F1 drivers\u2019 championship after winning the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday.<\/strong>
His teammate and main title rival Oscar Piastri failed to make the podium in Sao Paulo as Norris moved 24 points clear in the standings with three races remaining.
But Norris\u2019s victory at Interlagos was rightly overshadowed by a stunning recovery drive from Max Verstappen.
The Red Bull driver and reigning world champion was forced to start the race from the pit lane and also suffered an early puncture, but fought back to somehow finish third.
Verstappen is 49 points behind Norris although the McLaren man warned his team after the race they could not afford to rest on their laurels ahead of the final three races in Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

The beginning of the race could not have gone worse for Ferrari. Charles Leclerc lined up third, after a strong qualifying on Saturday, while Lewis Hamilton was further back in 13th. The seven-time world champion didn\u2019t make it through the opening laps before disaster struck, ruining his Sunday.
Heading down the start-finish straight, Hamilton clipped the rear of Franco Colapinto\u2019s car, resulting in the Ferrari driver losing his front wing and the car suffering damage. It was later confirmed over the radio that his car suffered floor damage, leading to a loss in downforce which makes the car feel unstable.
The race restarted on Lap 6, and Leclerc was still running third at the time, while Hamilton got a new front wing and was at the back of the pack. But as the grid barrelled towards Turn 1, Piastri, Antonelli and Leclerc were three-wide, with the McLaren and Mercedes drivers much closer. Piastri tapped Antonelli, and Antonelli\u2019s right rear hit Leclerc, sending him off the track and the Ferrari\u2019s left-front tire rolling off.
Hamilton was handed a five-second penalty for causing a collision with Carlos Sainz earlier in the race and, in the end, he needed to retire the car, marking a double DNF for the Prancing Horse. Ferrari now faces a steeper gap in the battle for second in the constructors\u2019 championship, a position currently held by Mercedes.
We\u2019d seen this script 12 months ago. A miserable Saturday at Interlagos had left Max Verstappen starting way down the order at Interlagos, only for him to charge from 17th to victory in what still stands as one of the greatest F1 wins of his career.
But Verstappen was skeptical of any repeat this year following his shock Q1 exit. The Red Bull car had been difficult to tame all weekend, prompting the team to opt for a pit lane start so it could fit a new power unit and make some setup changes to put Verstappen in a happier groove.
It worked out perfectly. Verstappen was unlucky to suffer a slow puncture that forced an early second stop, but he otherwise was able to charge with his fresh power unit and scythe through the field. Although Verstappen ran out of sequence with Lando Norris at the front, by mid-race it was clear he was in the fight for the podium.
After Norris\u2019s second stop, Verstappen cycled into the lead, much to the surprise of race engineer GianPiero Lambiase. But it was never going to last. Red Bull had to be sensible and make a late stop for softs, opting against the Hail Mary for victory. It ensured Verstappen would beat Oscar Piastri and giving him the means to go on a late charge against the Mercedes cars ahead on the quick but fragile soft tires.
George Russell had no way to keep Verstappen behind for third, slipping back with nine laps to go, but Antonelli was able to cling on to second. Verstappen had to settle for third, but it barely diminished what was an astonishing fightback.
The championship outlook may have grown a bit bleaker for Verstappen this weekend, considering Norris\u2019s maximum haul. But that won\u2019t stop his performance here being remembered for a long, long time.
After stumbling so frequently in the early stages of the year, Lando Norris is peaking at the right moment \u2014 just when his rivals have suffered their own setbacks.
The title outlook has transformed from a couple of months ago, when Norris was more than one race win back from Oscar Piastri and thoughts of a fightback seemed distant.
With three rounds remaining, he is now in a commanding position.
Oscar Piastri\u2019s 10-second penalty will surely go down as a major moment whenever the championship gets settled. Under F1\u2019s 2025 racing guidelines, which are set to be re-evaluated with the drivers at the upcoming race in Qatar, Piastri did not have enough of his car alongside Antonelli to have the \u2018right\u2019 to the corner. This meant his complaint on the radio that he had \u201cno space\u201d was not a valid excuse.
It forced Piastri into damage limitation mode. He served his penalty when pitting on Lap 38 and taking a set of soft tires, which made a second pit stop an inevitability. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t look very pretty where I\u2019m sat,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>Piastri told his race engineer, who assured him he could push to put pressure on the cars ahead. All he could muster in the end was fifth place, toiling behind George Russell in the closing laps.

There are three races remaining \u2014 in Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi \u2014 which means there are 83 points left up for grabs.
Max Verstappen trails Lando Norris by 49 points and so likely needs Norris to fail to finish in one of the above races if he\u2019s to stand a chance of winning the title.
Interestingly, both Verstappen and Oscar Piastri failed to win any of those three races last season. Norris, on the other hand, finished second in Vegas and Qatar and won the final race of the 2024 campaign, in Abu Dhabi.

Lando Norris has just dedicated his win to Gil de Ferran, the 2003 Indy 500 winner and former McLaren consultant who sadly died in late 2023.
McLaren team boss Andrea Stella wears a pin of the Brazilian\u2019s racing helmet livery on his shirt for every race, symbolizing how much he meant to the team. Lovely stuff.
Max Verstappen is unsurprisingly delighted after that drive.

\u201cI just tried to pass as fast as possible, but some cars were in DRS trains so it was not straightforward. With all that, to finish 10 seconds from the lead was incredible.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>
Kimi Antonelli is interviewed next and seems a little shellshocked after those dramatic final laps.

An important points buffer for Lando Norris \u2014 now 24 clear, he can afford to finish second in all of the three remaining races, and the Qatar sprint, and he would still be world champion.
Lando Norris tells McLaren the gap \u201cwasn't big enough for my liking\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and that they\u2019ve still got plenty to work on before the final three races of the season.
He clearly felt the threat from Max Verstappen today, but I think this continues a big change from Norris of late.
He\u2019s not getting carried away, not over-excited and gabbling away every time he\u2019s on camera. He's taking it one step at a time, and that new calmness in his driving and demeanor could really be what makes the difference in Abu Dhabi.
What drama on the final lap!
Kimi Antonelli runs wide through the first turn on the final lap which means Max Verstappen is all over him like a rash. But the Italian somehow hangs on to equal his best ever F1 finish!
George Russell also defends brilliantly in a result that has huge ramifications in the world title fight. He clings onto fourth which sees Oscar Piastri finish fifth.
A superb drive from the Englishman who extends his world championship lead. Analysis of that coming right up.
But, at the moment, all the drama on track involves the Mercedes. And, as it stands, Kimi Antonelli and George Russell are hanging on!
