Russia’s defence ministry said its forces were battling Ukrainian troops in the towns of Pokrovsk, Myrnohrad and Kupiansk.
Fighting is taking place in the centre of Pokrovsk and in its western industrial zone, the Russian ministry said.

Meanwhile, the British defence ministry said Vladimir Putin has ordered 135,000 Russians for conscription by the end of the year.
It marks the latest attempt of the Russian leader to bolster his armed forces in an effort to make a breakthrough on the frontline.
The Russian president spent the day at a sports festival in Samara in Russia’s southwest, where drone racing was among the main events.
Our Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett<\/a> said one of the events that has become a lot more prominent since the start of the war is para ice hockey.

Over in the embattled Ukrainian city of Kherson, actress and former UN ambassador Angelina Jolie was spotted this week, reportedly on a humanitarian mission, it was revealed today.
She visited hospitals, including a maternity ward and a children’s hospital, spending time with medical staff, families and volunteers.
Jolie was pictured wearing body armour that featured a Legacy of War Foundation patch, a charity assisting those affected by the conflict.

They’re a weapon synonymous with Russia’s war in Ukraine, and here the sky is full of them: Drones.
Tiny, kamikaze killing machines are zipping through the air in front of me.
But I’m not on the battlefield. I’m on a football pitch. And instead of being used to hunt targets, the drones are being raced.
I’ve come to a Russian sports festival in Samara. Drone racing is one of the main events.
It’s being held after dark in the city’s impressive football stadium, which was built for the 2018 World Cup.
The drones, and the various on-course obstacles, are lit up in luminous colours for the spectators to follow.
Pilots navigate via on-board cameras – the feed of which is projected on the big screen above.
Irina, 14, is part of the victorious women’s team.
The schoolgirl only took up the sport two years ago and says she practices two hours every day.
When I ask why she likes it, she replies in broken English: “This has adrenaline and you can be fast.”
The Kremlin has certainly been quick when it comes to recognising the sport’s potential to boost Russia’s military capabilities.
Ukraine and Sweden are progressing on a deal that could see Kyiv buy up to 150 Gripen E fighter jets.
Sweden’s defence minister said Stockholm could fund part of the deal with military aid.
The two countries signed a long-term cooperation agreement last month that includes the possibility of exporting the fourth-generation fighter jets.
While the cost of the deal hasn’t been disclosed, Swedish manufacturer Saab sold four of the jets to Thailand in August for $563m.
“It (the financing) is moving forward and we’re working closely with the Ukrainian side,” Pal Jonson said.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s defence minister said Kyiv asked Sweden to start training Ukrainian pilots on the fighter jets as soon as possible.
It comes after Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson signed a letter of intent on air capabilities.
“We have started the work to obtain Gripens to Ukraine and expect the future contract to allow us to acquire no less than 100 such jets,” Zelenskyy said last month.
Earlier, we brought you the news that a body had been pulled from under the rubble in Kamianske (see our 14.30 post for more).
Pictures from the site of the Russian drone attack have now been released by Ukraine’s emergency services.
Two far-right politicians from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party are visiting Russia next week.
It comes as the party is under fire for its ties to the Kremlin and accusations – which it denies – that it could be passing on sensitive military information.
Rainer Rothfuss, one of the two visiting politicians, will travel to Sochi to attend a summit between Europe and the BRICS, a group of major emerging economies including Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa.
The AfD is classified as “extremist” and a threat to democracy by Germany’s own intelligence agency.
“I shy away from neither effort nor public criticism of this form of informal peace diplomacy,” Rothfuss said.
He’s set to participate in a meeting with former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, according to German media.
The trip comes after several senior German politicians from other parties expressed concerns that the AfD could be supplying Moscow with information.

Matthew Whitaker, the US ambassador to NATO, has concluded what he described as an “eye-opening” visit to Ukraine.
Whitaker was joined in Kyiv by other Western ambassadors to the alliance for a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday.
As he departed, he said on X:
“The visit only reinforced that four years of war is four years too many. While peacemaker-in-chief President Trump is leading the efforts to end the war, continued support from our like-minded NATO Allies is critical.”
Whitaker didn’t give any more detail on how Trump is trying to finish the war. The US president has spoken little about the fighting in recent weeks.
A Russian soldier has been jailed for life for executing a Ukrainian prisoner of war, the first sentence of its kind since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
The court in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia found 27-year-old Dmitry Kurashov guilty of shooting dead Vitalii Hodniuk, a Ukrainian soldier who had surrendered in January 2024 after his dugout was captured by Russian forces.

The country’s southern defence forces has shared an update on fighting in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions.
It says some claims about Russian gains there “do not correspond to reality”.
It adds: “Indeed, the situation in the Oleksandrivs’k, Hulyaipil’s and Orikhiv’s directions is quite tense: over the past day alone, almost 50 combat clashes with the enemy have been recorded.”
But it stresses that none of the settlements is under Russian control.
Instead, it offers the following updates:
Yulia Svyrydenko, the Ukrainian prime minister, has called for Russian frozen assets to be “fully mobilised” after Moscow’s latest overnight attacks.
One person was killed and eight were injured by a drone attack in Kamianske, southeastern Ukraine, and other strikes were reported in the Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions.
“Russia’s ongoing terror against our civilians and energy systems continues, making it clear that the current level of pressure has failed to force Russians into reconsidering their fantasies of empire,” Svyrydenko says.
“Sanctions and tariffs on Russia’s energy exports and finances must increase.
“Russia’s frozen assets must be fully mobilised for defence, and Moscow must finally understand that Europe is serious about defending itself. 
“The time is now. Every day, the cost of this inaction only increases.”
