President Donald Trump on Saturday said he has instructed the Defense Department to \u201cprepare for possible action\u201d in Nigeria over the country\u2019s alleged killing of Christians.
\u201cIf the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, \u2018guns-a-blazing,\u2019 to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,\u201d Trump wrote on social media<\/a>.
\u201cIf we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!\u201d Trump added.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth replied to Trump’s social media post<\/a> with a “Yes sir.”
“The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria \u2014 and anywhere \u2014 must end immediately,” Hegseth said on X. “The Department of War is preparing for action. Either the Nigerian Government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
NBC News has reached out to the Nigerian embassy for comment.
Trump\u2019s announcement comes a day after he categorized Nigeria<\/a> as a \u201ccountry of particular concern,\u201d a designation the U.S. gives countries the government deems as engaging in \u201cparticularly severe violations of religious freedom.\u201d<\/a> Other countries on the list include China, Cuba and North Korea.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commented Saturday morning after Trump identified his country as one of “particular concern,” writing on X that<\/a> the “characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality.”
“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it,” Tinubu wrote.
The Nigerian government issued a statement Saturday after the designation, saying it remained committed to tackling what it called \u201cviolent extremism.\u201d
\u201cLike America, Nigeria has no option but to celebrate the diversity that is our greatest strength. Nigeria is a God-fearing country where we respect faith, tolerance, diversity and inclusion, in concurrence with the rules-based international order,\u201d Nigeria\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement<\/a>.
During his first term, Trump declared Nigeria a country of particular concern, an action that President Joe Biden\u2019s administration reversed in 2021 when then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken found the country<\/a> \u201cdid not meet the criteria\u201d to be included on the CPC list.
