It was another busy day for Volodymyr Zelenskyy as he joined the coalition of the willing talks on his visit to London.
Zelenskyy visited Sir Keir Starmer in Downing Street ahead of the summit, with some European leaders and NATO chief Mark Rutte attending it in person, while others appeared remotely.

Before the summit, the King hosted Zelenskyy at Windsor Castle, with Ukraine’s president invited to inspect the guard as the pair met for the third time this year.
Elsewhere, senior Russian officials continued to heavily criticise the new sanctions on their country: 
Reports also suggested Russia’s fourth-largest oil refinery, the Ryazan plant, had urgently halted part of its operations after it caught fire following a Ukrainian drone attack.
A Polish court handed down prison sentences to three Ukrainians today for their roles in a string of huge fires in Poland and the Baltic states, as Warsaw seeks to crack down on what it says is a wave of sabotage orchestrated by Russia.
Officials say Poland has been a target of sabotage actions as part of a “hybrid war” being waged by Russia to destabilise the functioning of countries that support Ukraine, involving tactics like arson and cyberattacks.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Russian secret services of being behind a huge fire that almost completely destroyed a Warsaw shopping centre in May last year.
Polish investigators are also cooperating with authorities in Lithuania, which accused Russia’s military intelligence of orchestrating an arson attack on an IKEA store in Vilnius.
That fire broke out three days before the shopping centre blaze in Poland. 
Russia has denied involvement in the arson attacks.
“All three defendants were convicted of participating (at various times in 2023-2024) in an organised group operating in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, and Russia, with the goal of committing sabotage and terrorist crimes,” Polish prosecutors said in a statement.
“The defendants acted jointly and in concert with each other and with other identified individuals, against whom the proceedings are continuing.”
The defendants are referred to by their first names and an initial due to Polish privacy laws.
The verdict is not final and may be appealed.
Nuclear-capable Russian Tu-95MS strategic bomber aircraft conducted a routine patrol flight over neutral waters above the Sea of Japan, according to Russian media.
Russia’s RIA state-run news agency RIA cited Russia’s defence ministry as saying fighter jets from foreign countries escorted the bombers at various stages of the 11-hour scheduled flight.
The move comes after NATO member Lithuania accused Russia of violating its airspace with two military aircraft yesterday.
Russia’s defence ministry indirectly denied Lithuania’s claims when it later said its fighter jets carried out a “training flight” over Russia’s Kaliningrad region and did not violate the borders of any other country.
Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev is in the US for “official” talks.
He says dialogue between the US and Russia is vital for the world and will continue, despite “a number of recent unfriendly steps” from Washington, Reuters reported.
Such dialogue will only be possible if Russia’s interests are treated with respect, Dmitriev says.
The comments echo those made by Putin yesterday, when he described the US sanctions on Russia as an “unfriendly act”.
Dmitriev also claims “various forces”, including the UK and Europeans nations, are trying to derail dialogue between Putin and Donald Trump.
In a phone call with Reuters, the envoy declined to say who he was meeting but said it had been planned “quite a while ago”.
Dmitriev was due to meet his US counterpart Steve Witkoff during his visit, Axios reported.
The meeting comes just days after Trump called off his own planned meeting with Putin in Budapest, and after US and EU sanctions were announced on Russian oil firms.
Russian planes dropped at least five powerful glide bombs on the northeastern city of Kharkiv in Ukraine today, injuring six people and damaging homes, according to city mayor Ihor Terekhov.
Images from the site of the strikes show police and rescue workers among the buildings, which were reduced to rubble by the attacks.
As we have reported here, the EU yesterday announced its 19th package of sanctions against Russia over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Among the measures were sanctions on another 45 companies, of which 17 are in third countries – China, Thailand and India.
Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has condemned the bloc over what she described as playing the role of “global policeman”.
“Having become so caught up in its own exceptionalism, the EU is blackmailing an increasing number of third countries with the proliferation of ‘secondary’ sanctions,” she said in a statement on the ministry’s website.
“In doing so, it is openly declaring that it considers itself entitled to dictate its own terms of trade and economic cooperation between sovereign states.
“The EU clearly doesn’t realise that such pretensions to the role of ‘global policeman’ (or, if you prefer, ‘customs officer’) are guaranteed to have consequences for the place and role of this association in the world.”
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen has given her thoughts after the coalition of the willing summit.
The coalition had a “focused, productive meeting”, she said on social media. adding that pressure “remains the only language Russia understands”.
Von der Leyen said urgent energy support for Ukraine ahead of winter and the need to strengthen Ukraine\u2019s air defence were both discussed at the meeting.
“Europe is scaling up defence industrial cooperation and advancing work on the Reparations Loan, with options to be presented soon,” she added.
Our international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn<\/a> has been reacting to the coalition of the willing news conference.
“I think it’s more about the kind of evolution and development of the coalition of the willing that this press conference was interesting,” he says.
“There were no big lines that came out of the press conference, no big announcements, but the sense of its evolution from a coalition that was set up in order to create the security guarantees required – should Donald Trump’s peace initiative bear fruit in terms of sending troops to Ukraine – to police any ceasefire line, to police any peace, and also other forms of security guarantees. 
“It’s now moving beyond that.”
Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, leading figures in the coalition, will see Donald Trump’s engagement in “coercive diplomacy” with US sanctions on Russia as a major moment for the group, Waghorn adds.

The coalition of the willing, the EU and others have been working on the Russian energy sanctions for months and years, the UK prime minister says.
“I think it is really important that we continue to bear down,” he adds.
“There are some countries which, in my view, should be moving a lot more quickly in relation to this.”
