There are “no plans” for Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to meet in the “immediate future”, according to a White House official. It comes after European leaders backed Trump’s starting point for Ukraine war negotiations, as fears grow that a planned US-Russia summit could collapse.

We’re pausing our live coverage of the war in Ukraine for now.
Tomorrow, we’ve just heard NATO chief Mark Rutte will visit Donald Trump in Washington.
And the big news tonight came when a White House official said there are no plans for Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to meet in the immediate future.
Mark Stone<\/a>, our US correspondent, said of the latest developments: “It’s the latest push-me-pull-you attempts on Trump as Putin pulls him one way… then NATO and Ukraine try to pull him back.
“The Rutte meeting is a consequence of the Zelenskyy-Trump talks on Friday, and Zelenskyy’s consultations in Europe since then.”
As Stone says, Volodymyr Zelenskyy already met with Donald Trump – on Friday – and is due to meet with key allies in Europe later this week.
In a statement this morning, Ukraine and the so-called coalition of the willing said they backed Trump’s ceasefire plan.
They accused Russia of stalling and stressed support for the current frontlines being the starting point for negotiations.
Meanwhile, Russian diplomatic talks with the US appear to have stalled. 
A preparatory call between US secretary of state Marco Rubio and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov seemed to throw up more problems than solutions, according to reports.
So much so, reports said the suggested Trump-Putin summit in Budapest, Hungary, could be postponed as a result – and then that White House official’s quotes about there being “no plans” came to light (see our 17.00 post).

Despite Russia’s war in Ukraine, several nations have continued to buy Moscow’s oil, keeping the Russian economy afloat.
Japan is one of those countries.
Last week, US treasury secretary Scott Bessent said he had told Japan’s finance minister Katsunobu Kato that the Trump administration expects him to stop importing Russian energy.
Tokyo was one of the G7 nations that agreed to phase out Russian oil imports.
However, Japan continues to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Sakhalin-2 project, which accounts for about 9% of its LNG imports.
“Since the invasion of Ukraine, Japan has been steadily reducing its dependence on Russian energy,” Japan’s trade minister Yoji Muto told reporters, while declining to directly comment on Bessent’s remarks.
He added: “We recognise that LNG from Sakhalin-2 plays an extremely important role in Japan’s energy security,” noting it contributes around 3% of total electricity generation.
However, he said any decision would be based on national interests.
A sabotage attempt on Romanian territory involving two Ukrainian citizens has been stopped, the country’s intelligence agency, the SRI, has said.
We brought you news earlier, see our 13.31 post, of a Ukrainian citizen being arrested in Poland after allegedly working for Russian intelligence.
Well, two more have been arrested in Romania.
The SRI said that the two people planted packages at the NOVA POST headquarters in Bucharest, a Ukrainian courier company.
The parcels were said to contain bombs hidden in headphones and car parts.
The SRI alleges they intended to blow the building up and that they were part of “an extensive network of saboteurs targeting European countries, controlled by Russian secret services”.
A 12-point peace plan to end the war in Ukraine based on the current frontlines is being worked on by European nations, according to a report by Bloomberg News.
Following similar efforts which brought about the current ceasefire in Gaza, the plan would be overseen by a peace board, chaired by US President Donald Trump, the report said.
The board would ensure the implementation of the proposal, the report added, citing sources familiar with the planning.
Ukraine would receive security guarantees, funds for repairing war damage and a fast-tracked route to joining the EU under the proposal, Bloomberg said the sources added.
Russia effectively rejected Donald Trump’s stance on negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine at the weekend, according to a Reuters report.
The news agency cites two officials, who described a Russian communique sent to Washington at the weekend as a “non paper”.
The message from Moscow just reiterated its previous terms for reaching a peace deal with Ukraine – repeating Russia’s demand that it take control of all of Ukraine’s Donbas region, one of the officials said.
Trump’s position is that the current frontlines should be frozen at their existing locations.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has directly linked the US putting off providing Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles with an apparent cooling in Russia’s engagement with peace talks.
Speaking in his nightly address to Ukraine, Zelenskyy said Russia “almost automatically became less interested in diplomacy” when it became clear Vladimir Putin’s call with Donald Trump had delayed any decision to give the Ukrainians Tomahawks.
“Russia is once again doing everything it can to abandon diplomacy,” he said in his evening address. 
He added: “As soon as the issue of long-range capabilities for us \u2013 for Ukraine \u2013 moved a bit further, Russia almost automatically became less interested in diplomacy.” 
“This is a signal that this very issue \u2013 the issue of long-range capabilities \u2013 may provide an indispensable key to peace.”
“The more Ukrainian long-range capabilities there are, the greater Russia’s readiness to end the war. 
“These weeks have confirmed this once again.” 
Zelenskyy continued that even the discussion of the Tomahawks had proved a “strong investment in diplomacy” because it showed they are “exactly the card they [Russia] are paying attention to”. 
“We will talk with Europeans and Americans about long-range capabilities,” he concluded.
Zelenskyy’s comments follow the news we’ve been bringing you today about US-Russia talks seemingly stalling – with the planned Trump-Putin summit in Hungary not happening in the immediate future, according to a White House source (see our previous post).
There are no plans for Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to meet in person in the near future, a White House official has told our US partner network NBC.
It comes after US secretary of state Marco Rubio and Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov held talks over the phone earlier today.
The official said: “Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Lavrov had a productive call. Therefore, an additional in-person meeting between the secretary and foreign minister is not necessary, and there are no plans for President Trump to meet with President Putin in the immediate future.”
Another call between Rubio and Lavrov is expected as soon as this week, the official said.
Trump and Putin last met face-to-face for talks in the US state of Alaska back in August. 
Last week, they agreed to meet in Hungary, but today there have been reports that summit is in doubt because of Russia’s unchanging stance on the war (see our previous post).
While the frontline remains largely unmoved in recent weeks, diplomatic efforts have been very back and forth.
Zelenskyy was in Washington on Friday, hoping to capitalise on a previous positive trip there, while Trump has said he is going to meet with Putin soon.
However, according to reports, Moscow has jeopardised that meeting by refusing to budge on its stance over Ukraine.
Both Reuters news agency and CNN reported on the issue that is proving a sticking point between Washington and Moscow.
Similarly, our US partner NBC News said talks towards planning the sit-down were “on hold”, citing a senior White House official.
Russia continues to demand Ukraine cede more territory before any ceasefire – land it has proven unable to take by force.
But this has reportedly proven a snag during preparations for the meeting between Putin and Trump, which took place during a call between Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and US secretary of state Marco Rubio.
The two were also supposed to meet before this was put on hold as well.
Two senior European diplomats told Reuters that the postponement of the Rubio-Lavrov meeting was a sign the Americans could be reluctant to go ahead with a Trump-Putin summit unless Moscow softens its demands.
“I guess the Russians wanted too much and it became evident for the Americans that there will be no deal for Trump in Budapest,” said one diplomat.
The Russians “haven’t at all changed their position, and are not agreeing to ‘stop where they are’,” said the second diplomat. “And I assume Lavrov gave the same spiel, and Rubio was like: ‘See you later’.”
CNN also reported on the development, quoting a source familiar with the matter.
It said that US officials felt, after the Rubio-Lavrov call, that the Russian “maximalist” position had not evolved enough.
Therefore, Lavrov was reportedly unlikely to recommend that the meeting with Putin go ahead.
One of the day’s major stories is a coordinated statement from Ukraine and European leaders saying they support Donald Trump’s peace effort.
They stress that his position on the current frontlines being the starting point for negotiations must be stuck to.
