Now the blame game has begun. <br \/>One computer science expert says some of the responsibility rests with the companies who use AWS.<br \/>\u201cCompanies using Amazon haven\u2019t been taking enough adequate care to build protection systems into their applications,\u201d says Ken Birman, a computer science professor at Cornell University in New York. <br \/>Outages like the one on Monday occur all the time, although not always at this scale. <br \/>Birman tells the BBC that app developers should take care to invest in backing up mission-critical applications that live in the cloud.<br \/>\u201cWe know how to make these systems stronger, and we know how to do it securely,\u201d Birman says.<br \/>The question of responsibility could well land in the courts. <br \/>More than a year after the massive CrowdStrike outage, Delta Airlines is still wrangling with the company to recover more than $500m in losses.<br \/>Even after CrowdStrike had fixed the issue, the airline said it had to manually reset 40,000 servers, leading to major flight delays over several days.<br \/>Given how integrated these systems are, determining fault isn&#x27;t always straightforward.<br \/><span class=\"ssrcss-1gp5o89-ImageWrapper etflsgg1\"><span class=\"ssrcss-1105681-Placeholder etlorgc0\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/ace\/standard\/128\/cpsprodpb\/\/vivo\/live\/images\/2023\/12\/13\/10b3e912-6df2-4377-8cbb-e8b9f6ec5028.jpg.webp\" width=\"64\" height=\"64\" class=\"ssrcss-11yxrdo-Image edrdn950\"\/><\/span><\/span><span><strong>Madeline Halpert<\/strong><br \/>US Reporter<\/span><br \/>Amazon &#8211; the e-commerce platform \u2013 has been a victim of its company&#x27;s web services outage too.<br \/>I&#x27;ve tried to purchase several items on the e-commerce platform today, but each time, I get a message that &quot;something went wrong on our end&quot;, often accompanied by a photo of a cute dog.<br \/>On Downdetector, thousands of people have reported issues with the site, although the number seems to be decreasing since a peak of problems around noon US time.<br \/>People are experiencing issues with Amazon&#x27;s Alexa products too.<br \/>We are hearing now that some customers have been able to make purchases on Amazon in the last few moments.  <br \/>After today&#x27;s Amazon Web Services outage impacted many of the world&#x27;s biggest businesses, some customers might be asking whether they can take legal action for any disruption they might have suffered.<br \/>Henna Elahi, a senior associate at Grosvenor Law in London, explains that whether money can be recovered will depend on &quot;several factors&quot;, including the contracts between the various parties and the severity of the outage.<br \/>For instance, banking apps are among those that saw thousands of reports of issues.<br \/>And, with users unable to make payments, this might have meant customers failed to complete purchases and breached contracts of their own.<br \/>&quot;This may very well lead to customer complaints and attempts to recover any loss caused by the outage from the business,&quot; Elahi explains.<br \/>In the US, users are reporting issues with a variety of websites.<br \/>People are having trouble sending and receiving payments on the platform Venmo.<br \/>Coinbase, the largest US cryptocurrency exchange, has been having issues with its services since 03:00 EST (08:00 BST).<br \/>And trading app Robinhood, as well as language learning company DuoLingo, also appear to be experiencing technology problems.<br \/>Several media organisations were hit by the outage too, including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.<br \/>Starbucks has confirmed its app experienced disruptions earlier in the day but says it is now working again. <br \/>&quot;I can confirm that our mobile order ahead app and pay features are all operating normally,&quot; she says. Tonia transferred another \u00a310 &#8211; hoping it was a one off error. Thousands of people have reported issues using many services in the country as of 15:30 BST, including the payment provider Venmo, rewards app Fetch and shopping tool Instacart.<br \/>Meanwhile in the UK it does not all seem to be working properly &#8211; we have seen some issues still remain when searching on Pinterest\u2019s app, while Duolingo now appears offline and says it is experiencing a \u201cmaintenance break\u201d.<br \/>Just when it looked like things were getting better, too.<br \/>More than 1,800 people have reported issues with Starbucks&#x27;s mobile app, according to outage monitor Downdetector. <br \/>The coffee company allows users to order drinks or get reward points through its app. <br \/>A line chart on the Downdetector site shows a <a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.com\/status\/starbucks\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">sharp spike<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> in reports at around 12:00 BST. <br \/>It&#x27;s unknown if this is linked to the Amazon outage, or if it is unrelated.<br \/>We have reached out to Starbucks for comment. <br \/><span><strong>Emer Moreau<\/strong><br \/>Business reporter<\/span><br \/>A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed that all its systems \u2013 including online banking for Halifax and Bank of Scotland \u2013 are now running as normal.<br \/><span><strong>Tom Gerken<\/strong><br \/>Technology reporter<\/span><br \/>Reports of the outages first emerged at 08:00 BST. Now we\u2019re well past 15:00 BST and there are still problems &#8211; though lots has been done. <br \/>Many sites and services are working properly now, though reports are still coming in for some.<br \/>Amazon\u2019s latest update says the firm has \u201capplied multiple mitigations\u201d but it is still seeing errors \u201cfor new EC2 instance launches\u201d.<br \/>Basically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/c5y8k7k6v1rt?post=asset%3A4c9e2de2-e1a0-4288-a8d1-3d2291156c7d#post\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">that means the virtual computers we told youabout earlier still aren\u2019t working properly.<\/a><br \/>But the main problem which took down so many apps and services today has been fixed.<br \/>Cameron is a trainee accountant from London and has spent four hours online today trying to pay for his vital accountancy exams on a webpage that keeps crashing.<br \/>\u201cFor me, it hasn&#x27;t just been an inconvenience, it&#x27;s temporarily stopped my career progress,\u201d he says.<br \/>The exams are due to be sat in December, have a short booking window and involve waiting in a virtual queue for a slot.<br \/>\u201cHonestly, it feels surreal that a failure in a massive cloud network can have such a direct and scary impact on my actual job.
