Thank you very much for your efforts, personal efforts to stop killings and stop this war. That would almost certainly be an unacceptable level of risk for the Russian leader.
Instead, flying in a military aircraft would avoid the need for customs checks on the borders.
Although nations can deny flight plan access to sovereign airspace, flying along the Flight Information Region border (the international boundary of airspace between nations) is a way for military aircraft to navigate without entering either nation’s airspace.
A technicality – maybe – but effective.
Although NATO military fighters will probably shadow the Russian President during this visit, it is very unlikely alliance fighters will be granted weapons release authority in such circumstances.
Tomahawks have considerable advantages over other missiles previously provided to Ukraine, such as ATACMS or Storm Shadow.
The biggest is their range, which stretches to about 1,550 miles (2,500km) for some variants.
That distance would allow Ukraine to launch from deep inside its territory and still strike targets inside Crimea and large swaths of Russia, including the Moscow area and beyond.
What targets could it go for?
Military targets would be near the top of Ukraine’s hit list.
Kyiv struck the Olenya airbase, in northwestern Russia, with drones during Operation Spiderweb in June, but could do significantly more damage if it could use Tomahawk missiles instead.
The region is also home to key industrial and military complexes including Severomorsk, where Russia’s Northern Fleet surface assets are home ported and a large air base, Severomorsk-1, is located.
Ukraine might also want to target Russian energy sites, which it has done dozens of times in recent months, hitting the country’s refining capacity.
The effect on Russia’s fuel market is notable, with several regions in the country facing significant petrol shortages (see 12.56 post for more on this).
Tomahawks could accelerate this dynamic, putting additional strain on Russia’s energy production.
Could Ukraine use Tomahawks however it wants?
Probably not.
Washington would presumably provide intelligence on targets and radar evasion, since the cruise missiles use US military navigation systems for guidance.
That means the Trump administration would ultimately have a veto over which Russian targets Kyiv wants to hit.
These are the latest pictures reaching us from the battlefield showing troops firing at Russian forces near the frontline town of Kupiansk, in the Kharkiv region.
The 15th ‘Kara-Dag’ Brigade of the Operational Assignment of the National Guard of Ukraine can be seen firing a D-30 howitzer in the images below.
When Volodymyr Zelenskyy boarded his flight to the US, he would have been hoping to receive military support from Donald Trump, our military analyst Sean Bell has said.
But after Trump’s two-hour phone call with Vladimir Putin last night, it appears the US president wants to negotiate with his Russian counterpart.
“The question is, why does he keep doing this?” Bell asked, as he made the point that Putin does not back his promises with action.
Bell went on to say it was no coincidence Putin was so keen to get on the phone to Trump now.
“It’s true that winter is fast approaching and it can be very difficult for the frontline… therefore, what Putin is doing here is buying time.”
Watch his full analysis below.
Be the first to get Breaking News
Install the Sky News app for free

source

In a matter of minutes, Donald Trump will host Volodymyr Zelenskyy – who had been hoping to secure new long-range missiles from the US.
