It would run counter to Russia’s security interests, he argues.
And European people are sceptical as well, as they “don’t know what is so bad about Russia and why they should tighten their belts to counter Russia”, the president says.
Vladimir Putin notes that, in his view, international sanctions over the war in Ukraine have failed to subdue Russia, which “demonstrated the highest resilience”.
“We take pride in that, we are proud of Russia and our people and armed forces,” the president says.
This means that a “global equilibrium” cannot be established without Russia’s approval in a multipolar world, he says.
Some are “still obstinate in their desire of inflicting a strategic defeat” on Moscow, however, he notes.
The motto of this year’s edition of the Valdai forum is “The Polycentric World: Instructions for Use”.
Accordingly, Vladimir Putin uses the opening remarks to give his perspective on what characterises a new multipolar world order.
In short, he believes it’s more creative, less pre-determined and much easier for national actors to lose their way and bearings – but it’s also more democratic.
It’s no secret that to Putin, a “multipolar world order” is mainly code for a world that is no longer dominated by just the US.
The Russian president is expected to share his thoughts on a new system of international relations in his speech at the Valdai Discussion Club, an annual discussion event in Russia established in 2004.
At a plenary session last year, he took the opportunity to accuse the West of “unprecedented geopolitical greed” following the end of the Cold War, blaming it for his full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
We’ll be bringing you key updates from his speech here, and you can watch live at the top of the page.
Russia and Ukraine have exchanged 185 prisoners of war from each side today, as we reported at 13.22.
New pictures show the emotional return of the released Ukrainians, who gathered at an unknown location in the country after the swap.
Be the first to get Breaking News
Install the Sky News app for free

source

In a key speech, Vladimir Putin has said it is “impossible” to believe Russia would strike a NATO country – even as Moscow is accused of drone incursions.
