The aggressor country uses weapons that are impossible without foreign components.
“Sanctions need to be tightened and all supply chains blocked.”
As blame is exchanged over the power cut to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, one thing is clear – Russia wants the station’s energy, says a leading thinktank.
Russia has been laying foundations to connect the ZNPP to the Russian power grid for months, the Institute for the Study of War said.
It has been constructing power lines into occupied southern Ukraine and Russian officials have announced their intention to run the ZNPP at its full capacity.
Transferring the power plant to the Russian grid means disconnecting it from the Ukrainian one, which would “very likely introduce significant risks”, said the ISW.
Its six nuclear reactors have remained in a cold shutdown since April 2024 to mitigate the risk of a disaster, which is dependent on a reliable power supply.
The ISW said: “Russia’s integration of the ZNPP into the Russian power grid will exacerbate security risks, degrade Ukraine’s future power generation capacity, and serve as a tool that Russia can use to legitimise its occupation of Ukraine.”
Ukraine’s nuclear power infrastructure has once more been in the spotlight in recent days.
Most notably, Ukrainians have raised the alarm over Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia now being cut off from external power for eight consecutive days. Russia occupied the plant in the early months of the war.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said it was “by far the longest lasting such event” during more than three years of war.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed Russian artillery for cutting the power line, but the Kremlin spokesman said it was Ukrainian shelling.
Last night, Zelenskyy also drew attention to Russian drone strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in Slavutych, the city whose power supply services Chernobyl, the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident.
They left the former nuclear power plant in Chernobyl without power for three hours, he said.
The strikes overwhelmed defences and caused a blackout, affecting the sarcophagus that prevents radioactive dust from escaping the damaged reactor.
“Russia is deliberately creating the threat of radiation incidents,” Zelenskyy said in a statement.
He called Russia’s strikes on energy facilities, including on nuclear infrastructure, “a global threat”.
The Russian-installed management of the Zaporizhzhia plant downplayed the situation yesterday and today in statements to Russian state media, saying everything was under control.
However, they noted the lack of external supply was a threat as the plant is currently being cooled by emergency diesel generators. Two back-up generators are reportedly being activated within hours today.
The IAEA also said there was “no immediate danger” in Zaporizhzhia but warned that the current situation was “not sustainable”.
Our Europe correspondent Alistair Bunkall is on the ground in Copenhagen and had the chance to briefly speak to Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Ukrainian leader told him that it would be a “significant” boost to Ukraine if the US provides them with long range weapons and intelligence, as is being reported in American media (see our 9.30 post).
“We spoke with the United States.
