Most leaders have so far refrained from taking on Donald Trump directly in their speeches at the UN this week – not, however, Bolivia’s outgoing president, Luis Arce, who used his speech a while ago to deliver scathing criticism of the US president.
Arce partly blamed the Trump administration for ongoing wars around the world, as it was seeking “to give the United States back its position as a hegemonic power at the cost of the liberal system, free trade, globalisation, and to cause pain and death.”
Behind Trump’s policies was a desire to acquire natural resources, subordinate other countries, and “maintain a unipolar world order at any cost”, Arce said.
He also branded the US “imperialist” for its alleged interventions with the sovereignty of Venezuela’s socialist regime.
Notably, Arce also took on the state of international cooperation – just like Trump did in his speech – blaming a “wild capitalist system” for what he called a rise in inequality and injustice around the world.
Arce, a leftist, will leave office after his term ends, refraining from seeking re-election as he is mired in deep unpopularity. 
His country currently looks set to elect its first non-left-wing president in two decades.
Erdogan is “very respected” by both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Trump says when a reporter asks whether the Turkish leader could help host direct negotiations between the two presidents.
“I think he could have a big influence if he wants to,” Trump said. “Right now, he’s very neutral. He likes being neutral.”
Erdogan has repeatedly offered that Turkey could host direct peace talks in Istanbul again. Ukraine and Russia had previously engaged in direct negotiations in Istanbul in mid-2022, shortly after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The two sides held further, unsuccessful talks, in Turkey earlier this year.
Yet again, though, Trump notes that the best thing that Erdogan could do is “not buy oil and gas from Russia”.
Trump had been hoping to arrange a Putin-Zelenskyy summit after he hosted the Russian president in Alaska. 
But on his state visit to the UK this month, Trump said Putin had let him down. 
He then shifted again this week at the UN, saying for the first time that he thought Ukraine could recapture all of the territory it has lost to Russia.
Donald Trump is now asked whether he is going to be speaking to Erdogan about the war in Gaza.
“I don’t know about his stance,” the US president replies, referring to his Turkish counterpart.
“We want to get Gaza over with,” he says.
Trump tells reporters he had a “great meeting” with Middle East leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
“I think we’re close to getting some kind of deal done,” he adds.
“We want to get the hostages back, I have to get the hostages back.”
Trump says there are around 20 living hostages and around “38 or so dead hostages”.
“Pretty sad, and the parents of those dead souls, those dead, mostly men, boys, many cases, they want those bodies back so badly,” he says.
Trump reiterates he believes “we’re going to be close to a deal”.
The planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, at the White House is currently under way.
In his opening remarks at the Oval Office Trump said that he liked the “opinionated” Turkish president.
But, he added, he’d “like him to stop buying oil from Russia.”
He is doubling down on a message that he also emphasised prominently in his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
It was “embarrassing” that some European countries were still buying oil from Russia, Trump said then.
In the Oval Office, Trump goes on to call Russia’s war in Ukraine “disgraceful”, calling out the “unnecessary killings”.
“Putin ought to stop,” Trump said.

The highly anticipated speech by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was beset with complications, but given the circumstances, Abbas gave the best speech he could, Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, the former US ambassador to Malta, has been telling Sky News presenter Gareth Barlow<\/a>.<\/b>
The speech to the UN General Assembly earlier was “unlikely to move the needle forward to get a ceasefire in place”, she said.
Abercrombie-Winstanley, who is also a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council thinktank, noted Abbas said “all the right things with regard to pursuing a serious peace with Israel”, condemning Hamas and emphasising Israel’s right to exist.
After all, Gaza’s fate “still lies largely in the hands of the prime minister of Israel and what he is willing to do to stop the conflict”, the former ambassador added.
She believes it is time for 89-year-old Abbas – who has been in power since 2005 – to leave the administration to younger hands, however.
“There are several capable Palestinian technocrats who can come after and indeed, the United States and Arab partners know who they are and are prepared to work with them… He has this challenge to leave the stage,” she said.
Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili is next to speak at the UN General Assembly in New York.
He’s at the podium after Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s remarks yesterday in which Ukraine’s president said Georgia has been “lost” to Russia (see 10.19 post).
“For the fourth year now, a horrific bloody war has been raging in Ukraine bringing catastrophic consequences and immense human suffering,” he says.
“We understand better than many the pain that the Ukrainian nation endures today.
“Now, as before, Georgia expresses its firm and unwavering support for the Ukrainian people as we deeply understand the importance of peace.”
Kavelashvili also takes a moment to praise Donald Trump’s peace efforts, and mentions the agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan as well as the US president’s work on the Ukraine war.
Anthony Franck Laurent Saint Cyr, president of Haiti’s transitional council, tells the UN that a “human tragedy is unfolding” in his country.
“Every day, innocent lives are extinguished by bullets fired,” he says.
“Entire neighbourhoods are disappearing, forcing nearly one million people into internal exile and annihilating memories, investment and infrastructure.”
Gangs seized control of almost the entirety of the country’s capital Port-au-Prince this summer.
Sadly, chaos there is nothing new.

As Mahmoud Abbas’s speech wrapped up, our US correspondent Mark Stone<\/a> said he was “struck” that the Palestinian president avoided criticising Donald Trump.
“He could have chosen to criticise the fact that the Americans blocked the visas so no one from the Palestinian delegation could be here in New York – he decided not to,” Stone explained.
“He could have criticised the Americans for what appears to be open-ended support for Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israelis – he chose not to.
“I think that is very, very telling.”
Stone said that Abbas knows it is absolutely not in the Palestinians’ interest right now to criticise the American administration.
He added that the Palestinian president’s speeches are usually “dense and complicated”, but this was different.
“I felt that he clearly needed to be seen to hit several buttons, because it’s not often that the Palestinian Authority president gets the limelight,” he said.
