They ought to be ashamed of themselves.”
He also said he had asked the UN to preserve security camera footage and demanded an investigation, adding that the Secret Service was involved in looking into the escalator incident.
UN officials have said the escalator’s built-in safety mechanism had been triggered and the teleprompter was operated by the White House rather than the organisation.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said a readout of the escalator’s central processing unit indicated it “had stopped after a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was triggered at the top of the escalator”.
He said Trump’s videographer had been travelling backward up the escalator to capture his arrival with the first lady and “may have inadvertently triggered the safety function”.
Good morning and welcome back to our live coverage of the UN General Assembly in New York, where the wars in Ukraine and Gaza will once again take centre stage.
There will be a big moment later this afternoon when the state of Palestine delivers a speech after a wave of countries formally recognised its statehood at the event.
The headline yesterday came when Volodymyr Zelenskyy stepped up to the podium, telling the UN “only we can guarantee our own security”.
Ukraine’s president warned that Russia’s recent drone incursion into Poland could have been “horrific”, and said “we are living through the most destructive arms race in human history”.
We also brought you coverage of another day of speeches – here’s a round-up of what was said:
Thanks for following our coverage of yet another busy day in New York at the United Nations General Assembly.
The big moment of the day came when Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered his speech, telling the UN “only we can guarantee our own security”.
Ukraine’s president warned that Russia’s recent drone incursion into Poland could have been “horrific”, and he said “we are living through the most destructive arms race in human history”.
You can watch back part of his speech in the video below.
Ukraine’s president didn’t directly mention Donald Trump’s U-turn in which the US president suggested Kyiv could claim back its lost territory.
Zelenskyy told Sky News yesterday that the move was a “big shift”, but our US correspondent Mark Stone said his message at the UN was a sign he knows Trump can turn on a dime.
We’ve also been bringing you speeches from the UN as world leaders took to the podium – here’s a round-up of what they said:
There will be another big moment at the UN tomorrow afternoon as the state of Palestine gets its moment to speak – we’ll bring you live coverage here.
In the meantime, you can catch up with the latest Q&A with our security and defence analyst Michael Clarke.
Here’s some of the key points he covered:
Watch back the full Q&A in the video below.
By Dominic Waghorn, international affairs editor
At its best, the UN is where the world can strive for a greater good and join together against evil.
At its worst, it is a platform to vilify enemies and strive for self interest.
We have seen it used for both ends in the last two days.
Donald Trump came to make a long rambling speech that took cheap shots at foes and make baseless grandiose claims about his personal record.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy seized the moment to warn the world. As the leader of a country at war for three and half years and counting he had good reason to do so.
The world faces the most dangerous arms race of all time, he said. Drone warfare threatens not just his country but the world because it is cheap and malleable.
Terrorist actors and malign governments have access to its awesome power and the world needs new security arrangements to mitigate that threat, he said.
Ahmed al Sharaa also had warning about war and its impact on the world.
He had a starring role this week, the former Al Qaeda jihadi turned statesman and revolutionary lead of a new Syria.
He walked in the footsteps of Gaddafi, Arafat and Kruschev, who all transfixed the world in their performances at the UN.
He closed his speech focusing on Gaza, the other war overshadowing this year’s gathering in New York.
The conflict and Israel’s actions he said “threaten new crises and struggles in our region”. Later in the week Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu will respond to those charges and escalating pressure to do his part to bring the war to an end.
The EU’s foreign policy chief has said it is “of great regret” that member states use Russian oil, after recent pressure from Donald Trump.
Speaking on The World with Yalda Hakim, Kaja Kallas said “the thing is that this oil and gas is just cheaper”.
But she acknowledged that, if Europe wanted the war to end, helping to fund Ukraine’s defence while simultaneously paying for Russian oil was self-defeating.
She said conflicts only end “when one party runs out of the means to run this war”.
“What we also need to understand is that Russia has invaded another country,” Kallas said.
Russia doesn’t “feel the pain of war like Ukrainians”, she added, because “people are dying in Ukraine and not in Russia”.
Asked whether it is embarrassing that European countries are, as Trump said, funding the Kremlin’s war, Kallas said “it is of great regret” that the EU has not been able to free all its member states from reliance on Russian resources.
Watch part of the interview below.
A former adviser to Vladimir Putin has tried to play down last night’s statement from Donald Trump.
The US president said that Ukraine could retake all the land occupied by Russia, surprising many.
We’ve brought you the reaction from the Kremlin earlier (see 10.57 post).
Afterwards, our presenter Jayne Secker spoke to Sergei Markov, a former presidential adviser to Vladimir Putin.
Markov tried to play down the importance of Trump’s comments, while not criticising the US, and playing up Russia’s strength.
Watch the interview here…
Donald Trump has “made himself a back door” with his comments on Ukraine yesterday, a former deputy assistant secretary of defence for European and NATO policy has said.
Trump wrote on social media that Ukraine could get back the territory it has lost, marking a major U-turn in his stance.
However, he went on to say he wishes both countries well.
“He’s positioning himself so that if he needs to take that back door, he’ll do it,” Jim Townsend told our chief presenter Mark Austin.
“We saw about a month or two ago when he first started talking about being frustrated… so we know there’s an end to his patience with all of this.
“What’s interesting is he could have walked three, four, six weeks ago, but he’s still hanging in there to work on this issue.”
Townsend added that it sounds as though Trump is setting up Europe to get the blame.
“He said in a statement if NATO and the EU give all the support that Zelenskyy needs, then Zelenskyy has the opportunity to get his land back,” Townsend said.
“So to me, it sounds like he’ll just flip it back if he wants to leave and say Europe, you didn’t step up and I’m out of here.”
Watch the full interview below.
Be the first to get Breaking News
Install the Sky News app for free

source

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas will address the United Nations virtually this afternoon after the US barred him from attending.
