Barack Obama has said the US is in the middle of a \u201ctug of war\u201d between two visions of the future, criticising progressives for becoming \u201csmug\u201d and \u201ccomplacent\u201d while populists pushed a conservative vision.
The former US president said on one side was the progressive view in which change comes through democracy, while the other, driven by populists including Trump, see a return to an older, more conservative worldview.
He told an audience in London on Wednesday: \u201cMy successor has not been particularly shy about it. That desire is to go back to a very particular way of thinking about America, where \u2018we, the people\u2019, is just some people, not all people. And where there are some pretty clear hierarchies in terms of status and who ranks where.\u201d<\/em>
Obama was also critical of progressives who he said became \u201ccomplacent\u201d and \u201csmug\u201d in the 90s and 00s, \u201cposturing that we believe in all these values because they were never tested. Now they\u2019re being tested\u201d.
