It\u2019s really just about executing and trusting the process.\u201d<br \/>Silver medalist Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic ran 47.98, the third-fastest time in history, one year after winning Olympic gold in the event.<br \/><b>TRACK AND FIELD WORLDS: <\/b><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/olympics\/news\/world-track-and-field-championships-2025-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Results<\/b><\/a><\/span><b> | <\/b><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/olympics\/news\/how-to-watch-world-track-and-field-championships-2025-schedule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Broadcast Schedule<\/b><\/a><\/span><br \/>McLaughlin-Levrone, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time world record breaker in the 400m hurdles, is now the first person to win world titles in both one-lap events.<br \/>She did so in her first time racing the flat 400m at a global championship. She also planned to race the flat 400m instead of the 400m hurdles at the 2023 Worlds, but withdrew before the meet due to injury.<br \/>McLaughlin-Levrone chose the flat 400m this season because she wanted a new challenge after going undefeated in the 400m hurdles since taking silver at the 2019 Worlds.<br \/>She went into these worlds seeded third by best time of 2025 (48.90) behind Olympic silver medalist Salwa Eid Naser (48.67) and Paulino (48.81).<br \/>\u201cMy coach (Bobby Kersee) loves boxing terms,\u201d she said. \u201cHe said, \u2018You\u2019ve got to go take the belt. It\u2019s not yours. You\u2019ve got to go earn it.\u2019 That\u2019s what we wanted to do today. There was a lot of doubt from a lot of people, I think, for me coming into this event.\u201d<br \/>Before Thursday, no woman ran the 400m within a half-second of Koch\u2019s world record time since she registered it. Koch was among many East German athletes whose record-breaking performances in the 1970s and \u201880s generated suspicion. Koch never tested positive and denied ever using PEDs, according to a group of Olympic historians known as the OlyMADMen.<br \/>\u201cThat (flat 400m) world record has stood for so long, and no one\u2019s come even close to it,\u201d McLaughlin-Levrone said in 2022 in one of her first comments expressing significant interest in the flat 400m. \u201cSo we definitely want to be able to try that and see what we can do there as well.\u201d<br \/>McLaughlin-Levrone came into worlds with a 400m personal best of 48.74. In Tuesday\u2019s semifinals, she ran 48.29 to break a 19-year-old American record (Sanya Richards-Ross\u2019 48.70). She went another half-second faster on Thursday.<br \/>McLaughlin-Levrone has not announced her event plans going forward toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, but in the past has not ruled out attempting to run both the flat 400m and 400m hurdles at a future global championship.<br \/>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to talk about the schedule on that one,\u201d she told Lewis Johnson, smiling, when asked about possibly doing it at LA 2028. \u201cI\u2019m going to need some days off in there if that was the case because it\u2019s tough fields in both events. You have to respect them.
