President Donald Trump<\/a> said Saturday he is \u201cready to do major Sanctions on Russia<\/a>\u201d once all NATO countries<\/a> have started \u201cto do the same thing\u201d and pause their purchases of oil from Moscow.
He also urged NATO countries to impose \u201c50% to 100% TARIFFS ON CHINA,\u201d which he said should be withdrawn after the Russia-Ukraine war has concluded.
\u201cChina has a strong control, and even grip, over Russia, and these powerful Tariffs will break that grip,\u201d Trump wrote<\/a> in a Truth Social post, which he said was the text of a letter sent to all NATO nations and \u201cthe world.\u201d
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent<\/a> lauded Trump\u2019s move to urge NATO nations to impose strict sanctions on China.
\u201cOnly with a unified effort that cuts off the revenues funding Putin\u2019s war machine at the source will we be able to apply sufficient economic pressure to end the senseless killing,\u201d Bessent wrote<\/a> on X.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose<\/a> sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, but has so far held off from doing so.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> urged allies to not to \u201clook for excuses\u201d to avoid sanctions.
\u201cI urge all partners to stop looking for excuses not to impose sanctions\u2014Europe, the U.S., the G7, the G20,\u201d Zelinskyy wrote<\/a> Saturday on X.
\u201cIt is necessary to reduce the consumption of Russian oil, and this will definitely reduce Russia\u2019s ability to fight. We can hear the position of the U.S., and this position should be heard by all who still choose supplies from Russia rather than from other partners,\u201d he added.
Earlier this month<\/a>, the president said he was prepared to move towards a second phase of sanctioning Russia, but has not yet imposed the levies.
Part of Trump\u2019s reluctance to impose the strict economic punishments may be in part because he hopes he can broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, analysts previously told CNBC<\/a>.
\u201cThe second reason … is there is a sense that if Russia is defeated … then it has no choice but to go even further all-in with China, and that potentially then would strengthen China\u2019s position,\u201d Chris Weafer, the chief executive of Moscow-based Macro-Advisory, told CNBC earlier this month.
Trump\u2019s Saturday post underscores that he is shifting his focus to NATO nations to put pressure on Russia to end its war.
\u201cAs you know, NATO\u2019S commitment to WIN has been far less than 100%, and the purchase of Russian Oil, by some, has been shocking!\u201d Trump wrote in the post.
\u201cIt greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia,\u201d he continued.
Hungary and Slovakia have continued to buy Russian fossil fuels, drawing criticism from Trump officials.
\u201cWe want to displace all Russian gas. President Trump, America, and all the nations of the EU, we want to end the Russian-Ukraine war,\u201d U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said Friday<\/a>.
