get another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/white-house\">White House<\/a> schoolyard bullying session, because there\u2019s a slim chance that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/trump-putin-meeting-alaska-moscow-deal-b2808768.html\">finally have tired of being played by the Kremlin<\/a>.<br \/>It is now conceivable, just, that Trump is prepared to consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/trump-putin-meeting-alaska-moscow-deal-b2808768.html\">security guarantees for Ukraine<\/a> that reflect Nato\u2019s Article 5, which could mean that if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a> signed up to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/peace-deal\">peace deal<\/a> then its long-term future sovereignty and security would be protected, by force of arms, by allies including the US.<br \/>Giorgia Meloni, the Italian prime minister, spoke with Trump and went public with the idea (that had been hers in the first place) suggesting that the US president had bought into the concept.<br \/>The future of Ukraine\u2019s industrial heartland in the east of the country is uncertain, after Vladimir Putin reportedly demanded it be handed to Russia during his meeting with Donald Trump in Alaska on Friday.<br \/>The Russian leader demanded that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ukraine\">Ukrainian<\/a> forces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/ukraine-territory-map-trump-putin-russia-peace-talks-b2805235.html\">withdraw from Donetsk <\/a>as part of any ceasefire deal, and said he would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/editorials\/ukraine-borders-trump-russia-putin-peace-plan-b2808944.html\">prepared to stop fighting <\/a>on the rest of the frontline if Kyiv gave in to the demand and addressed the \u201croot causes of the conflict\u201d.<br \/>The Ukrainian president has said that Putin wants to take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/ukraine-territory-map-donbas-region-trump-putin-b2806618.html\">remaining 30 per cent of the eastern region<\/a>, which has been the will travel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/washington\">Washington<\/a> <a European allies to offer Ukraine security guarantees at his meeting with Donald Trump, US envoy Steve Witkoff said.<br \/>\u201cWe were able to win the following concession: that the United States could offer Article 5-like protection, which is one of the real reasons why Ukraine wants to be in Nato,&#8221; Witkoff told CNN.<br \/>He added that it was &#8220;the first time we had ever heard the
