The pair had a “long, meaningful” chat after Trump’s summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska last night, at which the US rolled out the red carpet for Russia’s leader. Follow live below.
Saturday 16 August 2025 10:18, UK
European leaders are set to release a joint statement after evaluating Donald Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin last night.
Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said the meeting this morning saw the leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, listen to the opinions of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He did not say when the statement would be made public.
The others involved in the call included France’s president Emmanuel Macron, German chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni.
Donald Trump has just posted on Truth Social after what he called a “great and very successful day in Alaska”.
He said the meeting with Vladimir Putin “went very well, as did a late night phone call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, and various European leaders”.
He continued: “It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up.”
He also confirmed Zelenskyy would meet him at the Oval Office on Monday afternoon.
“If all works out, we will then schedule a meeting with President Putin,” he added, before concluding: “Potentially, millions of people’s lives will be saved. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
We’ve just been hearing from General Sir Richard Shirreff, former deputy supreme allied commander of NATO, who was left unimpressed by the outcomes of the Trump-Putin summit.
He says the US would have been “entirely within their rights” to arrest Vladimir Putin when he landed in Alaska, “put him in an orange jumpsuit and send him off to The Hague in manacles”.
Instead, he says the Americans rolled out the red carpet for the Russian leader despite Putin doing “nothing in any way shape or form” to end the war in Ukraine.
He says the “only way” that Ukraine will get any guarantee to stop Russia achieving its intent of continuing the war is receiving NATO membership.
“Is Putin going to accept that? No. No way. Not a chance. The only way Putin is going to accept that is if he’s forced to accept it,” he says.
“That means that Russia’s got to get a bloody nose and it’s got to be defeated. That is about a million miles away at the moment. So I see no prospect of this thing coming to an end.”
What happens next?
“Well, the war will go on,” Sir Richard adds.
“Ukrainian cities will continue to get drone and missile attacks and Ukrainian civilians will continue to be killed.
“Meanwhile, the diplomatic dance will continue. Until Trump recognises that the only way to stop this war is to force Russia to accept what the West and what Ukraine wants, then nothing will change.”
Donald Trump’s highly anticipated meeting with Vladimir Putin is behind us, with no ceasefire agreement made.
The US president is now back in Washington and Putin has returned to Russia.
There are still question marks over what comes next, but thanks to statements from Zelenskyy, the White House and the Kremlin, we have an idea of what will – and won’t be – happening in the coming days…
Zelenskyy to visit Trump
The Ukrainian president says he will be meeting Trump in Washington on Monday, after he spoke to the US leader in a lengthy phone call earlier.
No plans for a three-way summit
We know Trump has proposed a summit between himself, Putin and Zelenskyy, but the Kremlin says it was not discussed at the meeting in Alaska.
No date on fresh Trump-Putin talks
Trump said the meeting last night was “very productive” and Putin said he hoped an agreement between the pair would “pave the path towards peace in Ukraine”.
Putin also ended the pair’s statements to the media after the talks by saying “next time, Moscow” – and Trump didn’t rule out visiting the Russian leader there.
But Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said he didn’t know when the US and Russian presidents would meet again, according to Russian state news agency TASS.
There’s no doubt about it, Vladimir Putin was the clear winner and Donald Trump was the clear loser from the Alaska summit, according to international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn.
He tells chief presenter Mark Austin that if the summit were scored like a sporting fixture, Russia would be a goal to the good, while the US and Ukraine would be yet to score a point.
“Putin has got a day out of the international doghouse on the world stage. He got the red carpet treatment. He got equal billing with the leader of a real superpower. And crucially for him, he did not have to agree to a ceasefire.
“He can go home now, claiming this as a huge victory. He’s given nothing in return for any of this. And it’s a propaganda bonanza for the Putin regime back in Russia.”
Waghorn says that images of Putin and Trump cosied up together in Alaska will be “catnip” for the Russian state media.
“In terms of losers, Donald Trump, I would say, is a loser,” adds Waghorn.
“He said he wanted a ceasefire from the Russians, and he hasn’t got what he said.”
Donald Trump has been busy on the phone since his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska last night, which ended without a deal to stop the war in Ukraine.
He spoke to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a call that other European leaders then joined.
But who was on the call?
Prime minister Sir Keir Starmer was among those included, along with German chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, president of Finland Alexander Stubb, Poland’s president Karol Nawrocki and NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte.
We’ve just caught up with Professor Mark Galeotti, a senior associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, the world’s oldest defence and security thinktank.
He tells chief presenter Mark Austin that while Vladimir Putin will be very pleased with how his summit with Donald Trump in Alaska unfolded, Ukraine will just be pleased it dodged a deadly bullet.
“I imagine Putin is flying back to Moscow very happy right now,” Galeotti says.
“He’s got public recognition on the red carpet with Trump, he has the prospect of further negotiations which help put off any question of further sanctions.
“And above all else, the thing that Putin really likes to have is multiple options.
“He can either simply use this as an opportunity just to bamboozle the West while he fights his war. Or he can see if some kind of future peace deal emerges that suits him.”
He says Trump’s vagueness over agreeing on “many points” with Putin will likely be clarified in the coming days due to leaks.
“Washington is essentially a source of constant leaking. So we’ll soon know if there is anything to this or if it was just Trumpian rhetoric.”
We’re hearing more details now about what was said during Trump’s lengthy call with Zelenskyy.
In a post on X moments ago, the Ukrainian president said the talk lasted for more than 90 minutes in total, with European leaders joining it.
He didn’t go into too many details about the content of the call, but we know he agreed to meet Trump in Washington on Monday.
Axios has reported that Trump told Zelenskyy and NATO leaders that Putin “doesn’t want a ceasefire and prefers a comprehensive agreement to end the war”.
Axios reporter Barak Ravid tweeted saying that Trump told them: “I think a fast peace deal is better than a ceasefire.”
We’ve just caught up with military analyst Professor Michael Clarke to analyse what went on in Alaska.
He says that it’s to “nobody’s great surprise” that nothing was agreed between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin that makes much difference to what’s happening on the ground in Ukraine.
“The frontline is still the frontline, 600 miles or so, and the fighting goes on,” he says.
“What was happening in Alaska again was not a showdown, with American pressure on Putin to declare an immediate ceasefire.
“What has happened in Alaska is more process. So there will be another meeting, maybe a trilateral meeting this time, to discuss the possibility of a ceasefire.
“But undoubtedly the Russians will try to put that meeting off. They don’t want a ceasefire. They will try to delay that meeting.”
Clarke points out that while this is happening, deadly Russian attacks on Ukraine have continued, particularly in Donetsk and Dnipro.
“From their point of view, what happened in Alaska won’t really make that much difference. The war goes on.”
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he is meeting Donald Trump in Washington on Monday.
He said the US president spoke to him on the phone for more than an hour-and-a-half after he met Russian president Putin in Alaska last night.
The Ukrainian leader said the meeting on Monday would be “to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war” and added he was “grateful for the invitation”.
In a Fox News interview overnight, Trump said it was now up to Zelenskyy to “make a deal” (see our 02.21 post) – but the Ukrainian leader’s statement suggests he’s still counting on US support.
Be the first to get Breaking News
Install the Sky News app for free

source

Donald Trump will host Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington on Monday, the Ukrainian leader says.
