Russian and American delegations are arriving in Alaska<\/a> ahead of the crucial summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin<\/a> later today.
Russia\u2019s veteran foreign minister Sergei Lavrov appeared in Anchorage donning a vintage USSR sweatshirt, having said Russia \u201cnever plans ahead\u201d prior to the conference.
Ahead of the summit, Mr Trump claimed the Putin was \u201cnot going to mess around with me\u201d, as he hopes to secure a ceasefire deal.
The US president also floated the idea that European leaders could be invited to participate in a second meeting, which would include Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a>.
The main aim of today\u2019s meeting is to set up talks between Putin and the Ukrainian president,<\/a> Mr Trump told Fox News Radio, adding that he has three locations in mind for such a meeting.
The US president, who is gearing up to meet his Russian counterpart for the first time since 2018,<\/a> said that he thinks both leaders \u201cwill make peace\u201d. Friday\u2019s talks between the presidents will include a one-on-one meeting, a bilateral lunch with both delegations and a press conference, the White House<\/a> announced.
Earlier on Thursday, the Russian leader praised Mr Trump\u2019s<\/a> \u201cenergetic and sincere efforts to stop\u201d the war in Ukraine.
Russian troops took control of the settlement of Oleksandrohrad in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Friday.

US president Donald Trump is getting ready to leave for the summit shortly, with footage showing Air Force One at Joint Base in Maryland, preparing to travel to Anchorage, Alaska.
It\u2019s just past 7am in Maryland right now and Mr Trump has already shown he recognises what an important day it is, as he posted on Truth Social a two word insight into his thoughts ahead of the summit: \u201cHIGH STAKES!!!\u201d
Anchorage citizens have shown solidarity with Ukraine but protesting the meeting between US president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin.
“This is just grandstanding for Donald Trump,” said Anchorage resident Helen Sharratt, 65, and originally from England.
“He likes to look good and think he’s doing something, but he’s not doing anything. And meeting with Putin is, I mean, actually, I don’t know who’s worse in terms of making a deal and not actually adhering to it.”
At the Chilkoot Charlie’s bar in Anchorage a collection of Soviet and czarist memorabilia adorns the Russian room, including pictures of Vladimir Lenin and the last Tsar Nicholas II, who was shot by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
On the other side of the world, in Moscow, matryoshka dolls featuring Putin and Trump were selling well.
Former Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov, who has become a critic of Vladimir Putin, has predicted that the summit in Alaska will end with a \u201chalf-measure ceasefire.\u201d
Kasyanov believes Putin wants a ceasefire on his own terms, explaining: \u201cHe [Putin] also needs a ceasefire because he is facing problems in the economy in Russia. That’s what I’m expecting, there will be some kind of half-measure agreement.\u201d
He told Sky News he thinks Putin will offer something to Trump to sweeten any potential agreement.
\u201cMr Putin could offer… for instance to resume supplies of titanium, for instance to purchase 20 to 25 Boeing aircrafts using frozen assets in the US, something like this, which… could be profitable for Trump from his perspective as a transactional guy.\u201d
Russia\u2019s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said as he arrived to Anchorage, Alaska: \u201cWe never try to anticipate the outcome of negotiations.
\u201cWhat we do know, however, is that we have arguments we can contribute to the discussion and that our position is clear. We will present it.\u201d
Lavrov appeared to wear an old USSR sweatshirt upon arrival at the conference with the \u2018CC\u2019 of \u2018CCCP\u2019 peaking through his black gilet.
Russia\u2019s armed forces launched 97 Shahed strike drones and two ballistic missiles at Ukraine, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have reported.
Drones came from the Kursk, Orel, Bryansk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk and Shatalovo Russian regions, while the two Iskander-M ballistic missiles came from Voronezh and Bryansk regions.
Strike drones attacked frontline areas of Kharkiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Chernihiv regions and missiles targeted Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions.
Ukraine was able to shoot down or suppress 63 drones.
One woman has died, and ten people including a teenager have been injured after a strike in the Kursk region by Ukrainian armed forces, Russia has said.
Kursk governor Alexander Khinshtein said, according to a statement on Telegram: \u201cUnfortunately, the number of injured has increased to ten people, including a child born in 2010. Our doctors are doing everything to help people recover.
\u201cSadly, a 45-year-old woman died on the spot. I express my condolences to the relatives again \u2014 we will provide full assistance to the family.\u201d
