Ukraine says it has attacked a ship in a Russian port loaded with arms from Iran, with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin meeting later today in Alaska. The pair will sit down together for the first time since the war began, with Trump seeking a ceasefire. Follow live updates below.

Italian officials were warned yesterday of potential Russian sabotage at a military base which hosts US forces in the north of the country.
Italy’s government was alerted to the possible threat against the Aviano military base, which is used by the only US Air Force military unit south of the Alps, according to our Europe producer Simone Baglivo<\/b>.
Aviano is also one of five bases in Europe with a nuclear bomb in storage.
Baglivo says a female suspect was stopped after reportedly being tasked with photographing the air base.
There were also a series of arson attacks in the woods surrounding the military compound. 
Sky News understands an investigation is ongoing and the Italian prime minister has been briefed.
Pictures are coming in now of the aftermath of a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Kursk region.
Alexander Khinshtein, the governor of the region, said on Telegram that 10 people were injured, including a “child born in 2010”.
He added: “Unfortunately, a 45-year-old woman died on the spot.”
Russia’s defence ministry said it had intercepted 55 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions overnight. 
 After Wednesday’s virtual meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy,  German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says Russia has “the opportunity to agree to a ceasefire and end the hostilities”.
“We expect President Putin to take President Trump\u2019s offer of dialogue seriously and, after the meeting in Alaska, to begin unconditional negotiations with Ukraine,” he adds on X.
Merz also called for a “path to a peace that upholds the fundamental security interests of Europe and Ukraine,” and said: “The aim has to be a summit also attended by President Zelenskyy.
“A ceasefire needs to be agreed at the summit. Ukraine needs strong security guarantees. 
“Territorial questions can only be decided with the agreement of the Ukrainians. 
“We stood as one as we conveyed these clear messages to President Trump before he set off for Anchorage.”

Alaska is a vast wilderness which is sparsely populated. But the quiet is being pierced now by a cacophony of questions over this summit.
Why was Putin invited here? What does he want? What’s he willing to concede? And is Donald Trump about to walk into his trap?
The summit will take place on a military base on the outskirts of Anchorage, Alaska’s biggest city.
It was thrown together at short notice, so there were few venue options available, given the security that is required.
Even so, many of the visiting journalists and support staff for politicians are staying in Airbnbs because there are not enough hotel rooms available for everyone.
There is the sense that this is a momentous occasion.
The last time Putin met a US president was in 2021, when he exchanged starkly differing views with Joe Biden in Geneva.
But that was before his invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He’s been a pariah ever since, wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes, including the abduction of Ukrainian children.
With this invite, Trump is bringing him back in from the cold.
Sir John Sawers, former head of MI6, tells Sky News that if a peace deal is agreed today in Alaska, it would likely be bad news for Ukraine.
Speaking to chief presenter Mark Austin<\/a><\/b>, Sawers says: “I don’t expect there to be a clear peace plan that emerges from this meeting. 
“If there is, that’s very bad news for Ukraine because if Putin succeeds in locking President Trump into a position which is close to Russia’s concept of how the war ends Ukraine [could be] essentially subjugated under Kremlin control.”
‘Be sceptical of Putin – but there is an opportunity in Alaska’<\/b>
Sawers says people are right to be sceptical of Vladimir Putin.
But he says there is still an “opportunity” in Alaska today.
“Every effort to bring the war to an end, I think, is welcome and there is an opportunity in here.
“However sceptical I might be about Putin, there is an opportunity to start a process that might bring an end to this conflict,” he says.

Donald Trump has repeatedly touted the idea of a second meeting, following the summit in Alaska today.
The US leader says such a meeting could be “more important”, involve Volodymyr Zelenskyy and even see a deal struck.
But our Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett<\/a><\/b>, reporting from Alaska, warns such wishes from Trump are “unlikely”.
‘Not an equal’<\/b>
“This idea of the second meeting… Putin is not going to relish sitting down with Zelenskyy, who he doesn’t consider an equal,” Bennett says.
He explains how Moscow previously “poured cold water” on White House suggestions Zelenskyy and Putin would meet.
Bennett adds: “I think it’s very unlikely he [Putin] will kind of be waiting around here for Zelenskyy to fly in if things go well.”
But he says that Putin will be aware of Trump’s need to have something to show from the meeting.
“So he might give a promise of a meeting, but I expect it’ll be a loose promise,” Bennett says.

As we get ready for tonight’s summit in the US, footage shows that Sergei Lavrov has already landed in Alaska.
Russian news outlet REN TV posted the clip of the foreign minister entering his hotel in Anchorage on Telegram.
Lavrov arrived wearing a USSR sweatshirt – an interesting reference given how the Cold War between the US and the Communist Soviet Union dominated the second half of the 20th century. The Russian Federation was established in 1991 after the fall of Communism.

Protests showing solidarity with Ukraine have been held in Anchorage, Alaska, before the Trump-Putin meeting there.

Special forces carried out a series of attacks overnight, including targeting the Syzran Refinery in western Russia, it says in a new statement.
