Donald Trump is asked another question about his meeting with Vladimir Putin, and whether the summit itself or incentives for peace reward Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
“I think that we have a situation that should never have started, it should never have started,” Trump says, dodging the question.
“It didn’t start under me, and for four years it wasn’t even discussed.
“I could see it was going to happen, after I left I could see what was happening… everybody’s to blame, Putin is to blame, they’re all to blame.”
Donald Trump has been asked about his meeting with Vladimir Putin tomorrow, and whether he is prepared to offer Putin access to rare minerals to incentivise him to end the war in Ukraine.
“We’re going to see what happens, we have a big meeting,” he says.
“I think it’s going to be very important for Russia, and it’s going to be very important for us that we’re going to save a lot of lives.”
Trump reiterates that he is meeting Putin “to save thousands of soldiers a week”.
Referring to tomorrow’s meeting, he says:”I think it’s going to be good”.
“But the more important meeting will be the second meeting that we’re having, we’re going to have a meeting with President Putin, President Zelenskyy, myself and maybe we’ll bring some of the European leaders, maybe not.”
Trump tells reporters he thinks Putin and Zelenskyy “will make peace”.

A Ukrainian MP has told Sky News he has “no big expectations” ahead of Donald Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska tomorrow.
“We have had a number of similar emotions, five or six times before when Trump was announcing personal contacts with Putin,” Andrii Osadchuk told our presenter Gareth Barlow<\/a>.
“All these attempts brought nothing, nothing at all.
“After each telephone conversation, Putin was launching missiles on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.”
Osadchuk explained that he “definitely welcomes” Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine, but said he was not very optimistic about the upcoming talks.

Vladimir Putin will travel to the “belly of the beast” when he meets Donald Trump in Alaska tomorrow, a former NATO deputy secretary general has said.
Rose Gottemoeller told our presenter Gareth Barlow<\/a> that the fact the Russian president asked for the meeting is “very interesting”.
“He is flying across 11 time zones to a US military base bristling with defences against Russia,” she said.
“Normally, a summit meeting would be on neutral territory somewhere where each delegation and each president has a standing, but not in this case.”
Asked about what the best outcome could be, Gottemoeller said she “would love” to see Trump and Putin announce immediate talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with the goal of establishing an immediate peace process.
But she warned the worst scenario is Trump announcing he and Putin have “sold Ukraine down the river”.

A former adviser to Donald Trump has told Sky News how the US president will be preparing for his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska tomorrow.
“Trump is a voracious reader,” Fred Fleitz told our presenter Gareth Barlow<\/a>.
“Most people don’t know that. I think he’s reading everything in his sight and I believe he’s talking to a variety of experts across the political divide.”
Fleitz said he believes Trump “knows what he wants” from the meeting with Putin.
“He’ll be reading and consulting extensively to get ready for his Alaska summit tomorrow.”
He added that the US president “is in no mood” for Putin to stretch things out any further.
“Trump has tried to take a transactional approach to try to end the war in Ukraine and to try to strike a deal,” he explained.
“He is a dealmaker, as everyone knows, but he changed his approach over the past couple of months.”

The information from Washington about tomorrow’s summit differs to what the Kremlin is saying, our US correspondent David Blevins<\/a> has said.
He pointed to Donald Trump’s claim that he believes Vladimir Putin will make a deal when they meet in Alaska tomorrow, while the Kremlin said it would be a “mistake” to try to predict the outcome of the talks.
Trump also said he’s not sure if there will be a joint press conference, while the Kremlin expects the two leaders to speak in front of the press together.
“In the space of really just a week, we’ve gone from Trump telling us that he anticipated some sort of deal involving land swapping, to him appearing to temper expectations, saying it wasn’t up to him to try to broker a deal,” Blevins said.
He explained that Trump now suggests he doesn’t envisage a deal being agreed tomorrow, adding that his changing stance reflects “the fluidity of the negotiation that’s taking place behind the scenes in the run up to the summit and the challenges that are posed by a summit being held at such short notice”.

A comprehensive solution to ending the war in Ukraine will take longer than tomorrow’s meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the US secretary of state has warned.
Marco Rubio told reporters “there will have to be some conversation about security guarantees” in order to achieve peace.
He also said there will have to be discussions over “territorial disputes and claims, and what they’re fighting over”.
“All these things will be part of a comprehensive thing,” he added.
“I think the president’s hope is to achieve some stoppage of fighting so that those conversations can happen.”
