As with anything Donald Trump does, he already has a picture in his mind.
The image of Trump shaking hands with the ultimate strongman leader, Vladimir Putin, on US soil calls to his vanity and love of an attention-grabbing moment.
There is also pride at stake.
Trump campaigned saying he would end the Russia-Ukraine war on his first day in office, so there is an element of him wanting to follow through on that promise to voters, even though it’s taken him 200-plus days in office and all he’s got so far is this meeting, without apparently any concessions on Putin’s end.
In Trump’s mind – and in the minds of many of his supporters – he is the master negotiator, the chief dealmaker, and he wants to bolster that reputation.
He is keen to further the notion that he negotiates in a different, more straightforward way than his predecessors and that it is paying dividends.
So far, despite sanctions on Russia, despite warnings and deadlines, the situation in Ukraine is only getting worse.
He’s hoping that this meeting, simply the act of sitting down with Putin, can change the tide.
The Russian president may have different ideas.
Donald Trump has told European leaders he doesn’t plan to discuss potential territory divisions with Vladimir Putin this week, Sky’s US partner newsroom NBC News is reporting. 
The US president made the comments on a call with leaders on Wednesday, two European officials and three others briefed on the conversation told NBC.
Trump told leaders he is going into the meeting with Putin with the goal of securing a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy was on the call, which reportedly left some with the impression Trump is not optimistic about Friday’s meeting.

‘Quick second meeting’<\/b>
Donald Trump said there is a “very good chance” that Friday’s talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin will be followed by a second meeting with the pair that includes Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Trump said if the first meeting with Putin on Friday “goes okay” then there will be a “quick second one” between Putin and Zelenskyy, “and myself if they’d like to have me there”.
The US president was speaking after virtual talks with EU leaders and Zelenskyy, who was in Berlin for the discussions.
More sanctions possible<\/b>
Trump also threatened “very severe consequences” for Russia if Putin does not agree to a ceasefire – but declined to say what those might be.
Scott Bessent says Trump will make clear to Putin that “all options are on the table” over the potential easing or strengthening of sanctions on Moscow.
The US Treasury secretary said sanctions “can go up, can be loosened and could have timelines”.
Trump and Putin will be meeting at a military base in Alaska on Friday, which was crucial to countering the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War.
‘Putin is bluffing’<\/b>
Zelenskyy said the leaders had agreed to a set of principles before the talks with Russia in Alaska on Friday, and that Trump supports a ceasefire and security guarantees for Ukraine.
He said he told Trump and European leaders that “Putin is bluffing – he is trying to push forward along the whole front”.
“Putin is also bluffing saying he doesn’t care about the sanctions and that they’re not working,” he said.

July has been the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since May 2022, according to the Ukrainian foreign ministry. 
The ministry cited figures from the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, according to which 286 Ukrainian civilians were killed and 1,388 were injured by Russia.
Ukraine has been under attack by Russia since Vladimir Putin’s decision to launch a full-scale invasion in February 2022.
“Russia’s missiles, drones and bombs keep killing civilians, even in homes and hospitals,” said Ukraine\u2019s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha.
“Accountability for these war crimes is inevitable. An immediate and unconditional ceasefire is the first step to stop Russia’s terror.
“European and transatlantic unity is the only path to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine and ensure global stability based on international law”, the foreign minister said.
Despite the impending talks between Trump and Putin about the war in Ukraine, the Russian military is continuing its attacks tonight.

The meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Friday is set to take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson – a military base that was key to countering the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War.
The base was created by merging Elmendorf Air Force Base and Army Fort Richardson in 2010.
It played a key strategic role in monitoring and deterring the Soviet Union during much of the Cold War.
It has hosted large numbers of aircraft and oversaw operations of a variety of early warning radar sites that were aimed at detecting Soviet military activity and any possible nuclear launches.
Trump briefly visited the base in May 2019 during his first term in the White House for a refuelling stop and to greet some of the troops stationed there.
Ahead of the Trump-Putin talks on Friday, preparations are under way in Alaska.
You will be aware that the US severely restricts any transactions by Russian entities on US soil – but those are being eased for the purposes of the summit.
The US Treasury Department has just issued a general licence authorising transactions related to the meeting.
The licence will allow transactions through 00.01 on 20 August that are “ordinarily incident and necessary to the attendance at or support of meetings in the State of Alaska between the government of the United States of America and the government of the Russian Federation”.
It does not unblock any property frozen by the US government, nor does it allow any transactions unrelated to the meeting.
It’s been a whirlwind day of diplomacy, with European leaders, Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy joining two separate calls to discuss Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The aim was to agree on a collective position before Trump meets Vladimir Putin on Friday for talks on the conflict.
So what happens next?
Friday:<\/b> Trump and Putin will meet for face-to-face talks in Anchorage, Alaska.
The last time the pair met was at a G20 summit in Osaka in 2019, during Trump’s first term in office, but it has been 10 years since Putin last went to the US.
Call with allies:<\/b> After the talks, Trump has promised to phone Zelenskyy and European leaders to update them on what happened. We also expect to learn quickly what, if anything, has been agreed.
Trump himself says his aim is to secure a ceasefire.

Second meeting:<\/b> Trump says that if the talks with Putin go “okay”, then he would want to hold another meeting – including Zelenskyy.
“I would like to do it immediately,” Trump said. “We’ll have a quick second meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy and myself if they’d like to have me there.”
A source has told the Reuters news agency that locations for that meeting were discussed by Trump, Zelenskyy, and European leaders on their call today – with cities in Europe and the Middle East in the frame.
But if the talks with Putin on Friday do not go well, Trump has threatened “very severe consequences” for Russia, and has previously mooted imposing additional sanctions.
European leaders were clear today that if Putin does not agree to a ceasefire, then they would impose fresh sanctions and other punitive economic measures on Russia.

The “if” was doing some heavy lifting.
President Trump floated the idea of a second meeting, this one between Putin, Zelensky and possibly himself – “if” the Alaska summit goes well.
Speaking to European leaders earlier, in a virtual call he rated at “10” and “very friendly,” he shared his intention to try to broker a ceasefire on Friday.
So, the strategy is crystalising \u2013 he will press for a trilateral meeting to discuss territory “if” he manages to secure a truce during the bilateral meeting.
But that begs the obvious question: what if he can’t?
The US president is keeping his options open \u2013 rating the chance of a second meeting as “very good” but preparing the ground for failure too.
“There may be no second meeting because if I feel that it is not appropriate to have it because I didn’t get the answers that we have to have, then we’re not going to have a second meeting,” he said.
Unusually, given how often he talks about his abilities, he conceded that he may not persuade Putin to stop targeting civilians.
But without elaborating on what any sanctions might be, he warned that Russia would face “very severe consequences” if it doesn’t end the war.
Even if he achieves the seemingly impossible \u2013 a halt to the fighting \u2013 there seems little chance of agreement on any swapping of territory.
Zelensky has told Trump that Putin “is bluffing” and wants to push forward along the whole front, not return land.
In the space of a week, Trump has gone from talking about a land-swapping deal, to a “listening exercise” to the potential for a ceasefire.
His expectations appear changeable, an indication of how fluid back-room negotiations are in the run-up to his first face-to-face with Putin in six years.
He described Friday’s summit as “setting the table for a second meeting”, but that’s presumptuous when the meal \u2013 or deal \u2013 isn’t cooked yet.
