She was accompanied by handler Shannon Nyman of the Luvable Dog Rescue in Eugene, Oregon.<br \/>\u201cEven a wonky dog deserves to be loved,\u201d Nyman said on the show. \u201cAnd that&#8217;s what we prefer to call them: not ugly, wonky.\u201d<br \/>The annual contest, administered by the Sonoma-Marin Agricultural District and previously a longtime highlight of the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, advocates for adopting rescue animals.<br \/>Petunia was rescued from Las Vegas in May, where her owner hoarded more than 50 canines living in crates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/pets\/petunia-worlds-ugliest-dog-contest-winner-rcna224239\" id=\"link-6499cbad95a37e6536a7747b606ea530\" target=\"_self\">Nyman said<\/a>. She attributes Petunia\u2019s lack of hair to unethical breeding.<br \/>\u201cMost of these bully breeds are being irresponsibly bred, unethically bred,\u201d Nyman said. \u201cThey have what&#8217;s called BOAS \u2014 brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome \u2014 so they need to get their soft palate reduced in order for them to breathe and function well.\u201d<br \/>Petunia, who had surgery to fix her breathing, receives daily coconut oil and sunscreen treatments and will return home to Oregon for some post-victory relaxation. That said, she does enjoy the spotlight.<br \/>\u201cShe loves all the attention,\u201d Nyman said. \u201cShe loves all the affection, all the humans petting her.\u201d<br \/>Alongside the spot on \u2018Today\u2019 and a $5,000 cash prize, Petunia will be featured on limited-edition merchandise from Mug Root Beer, which sponsors the contest.
