It could be a massive week for the future of the conflict and peace in Europe, with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin planning to meet in Alaska on Friday.
Will Volodymyr Zelenskyy be there, too? That’s still uncertain – as are the terms of any potential deal between the US and Russia.

Sir Keir Starmer has held a call with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, with the two leaders agreeing that peace in Ukraine must be built with Kyiv and not imposed upon it.
It comes as Donald Trump is due to meet Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, in what the US president described as a “feel-out” meeting.
A Downing Street spokesperson said Starmer and Carney welcomed diplomacy by Donald Trump to bring peace.
“Both leaders underscored that Ukraine’s future must be one of freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination,” the spokesperson added. 
Donald Trump has offered an “undeserved political reward” to Vladimir Putin instead of punishing Russia, the chair of Ukraine’s foreign affairs committee has said.
Speaking to our chief presenter Mark Austin<\/a>, Oleksandr Merezhko said the US president has made “serious diplomatic mistakes”.
“First of all, not to invite Volodymyr Zelenskyy is already a huge mistake,” he said.
“The second mistake is that he has already started some sort of negotiations with the Kremlin talking about some kind of territorial swaps.”
Merezhko explained that he was not sure what Trump meant by territorial swaps, but said carving up Ukraine’s territory is “out of question”.
“From my perspective, I think we should go back to the initial ceasefire proposal put forward by President Trump himself,” Merezhko added.
“He said from the very beginning that he’s talking about an unconditional ceasefire and only such a ceasefire creates the necessary conditions for beginning serious talks within the framework of Ukraine’s constitution and international law.”

Donald Trump said Volodymyr Zelenskyy “wasn’t part” of the upcoming talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday (see 16.48 post).
The Kyiv Independent spoke to Ukrainians ahead of those talks, with many concerned about Kyiv’s absence at the negotiating table.
“Unfortunately, we’re not in a position to influence this much. So I hope for the best. I believe. But, to be honest, my mind tells me that we can’t expect anything good from this.”

We can bring you more from Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, who has been virtually meeting foreign ministers today (see 18.28 post).
Her spokesperson has said that the EU “fully supports” an end to the war in a way that “doesn’t leave a backdoor open for Russia to re-enter and restart its aggression”.
“Ukraine’s right to exist as a sovereign nation is under attack, as well as the security of our European continent,” the spokesperson said.
“As far as Russia has not agreed to full and unconditional ceasefire, we should not even discuss any concessions. It has never worked in the past with Russia, and will not work with Putin today.”
The spokesperson added that the sequencing of the steps is important.
“First an unconditional ceasefire with a strong monitoring system and ironclad security guarantees,” they said.
“From the EU side, Ukraine has our full support for its battlefield needs. In addition, we will work on a 19th package of sanctions.
“And lastly, EU support for Ukraine’s budgetary needs and Ukraine’s accession negotiations to join the European Union will also continue \u2013 both are essential for Ukraine’s future once the war is over and for a stable European continent.”
Donald Trump has said he will try to return territory to Ukraine as he prepares to meet Vladimir Putin on Friday.
“Russia has occupied a big portion of Ukraine,” the US president said in a news conference earlier.
“They’ve occupied some very prime territory. We’re going to try and get some of that territory back for Ukraine.”
Trump said he\u2019s going to see what Putin “has in mind” to end the war and, if it’s a “fair deal,” he will share it with European and NATO leaders, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, our US partner network NBC News reports.

We can bring you these pictures from Ukraine now, where service members have held a funeral for combat medic Maryna Hrytsenko, who was killed in a fight against Russian troops.
The funeral for the medic of the third Separate Assault Brigade was held in the city of Chernihiv.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has given a further update on the intelligence and military command report we told you about earlier (see 18.45 post).
In his nightly address, Ukraine’s president said Vladimir Putin “is definitely not preparing for a ceasefire or an end to the war”.
“Putin is determined only to present a meeting with America as his personal victory and then continue acting exactly as before, applying the same pressure on Ukraine as before,” Zelenskyy said.
“So far, there is no indication whatsoever that the Russians have received signals to prepare for a post-war situation.
“On the contrary, they are redeploying their troops and forces in ways that suggest preparations for new offensive operations.”
Zelenskyy added that “this is not” what someone preparing for peace does.

While Donald Trump was speaking earlier, it was announced that Sir Keir Starmer will hold a virtual meeting on Ukraine with Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz.
The French government has said the meeting of the coalition of the willing partners comes ahead of Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin this Friday.
It adds that other meetings in various formats will take place throughout the day, including with Trump.
Earlier, we reported that the German government said it was convening a virtual meeting of European leaders on Wednesday to discuss how to pressure Russia to end the war in Ukraine (see 14.53 post).
The details of any agreement to end the war are likely to be “ugly” and “very difficult” for Ukraine to accept, a former adviser to Donald Trump has said.
Speaking to our chief presenter Mark Austin<\/a>, Fred Fleitz explained that we’re seeing “posturing from both sides” ahead of the meeting between Trump and Vladimir Putin.
“I think Trump is saying to Putin ‘I will give you one more chance to negotiate a ceasefire’ before implementing tough sanctions,” he said.
“Trump’s sole interest is stopping the killing, he said this long before the 2024 election.
“He thinks this war is outrageous, he thinks it’s unnecessary, I think his preference would be to get an immediate ceasefire and to stop the killing.”
But Fleitz warned that the details of an agreement will be difficult for Ukraine to accept.
“The world will say it’s not moral, but I think it’s more moral than allowing conflict to go on,” he added.
