On the streets of Ukraine’s capital, responses to the idea that the country may be forced to give up territory to Russia were met with mixed reactions.
“It may not be capitulation, but it would be a loss,” says Ihor Usatenko, a 67-year-old pensioner.
He adds that he would consider ceding territory “on condition for compensation and, possibly, some reparations.”
Anastasia Yemelianova, 31, said she was divided.
“Honestly, I have two answers to that question. The first is as a person who loves her country. I don’t want to compromise within myself,” she says, speaking to the AP news agency.
But she adds: “But seeing all these deaths and knowing that my mother is now living in Nikopol under shelling and my father is fighting, I want all this to end as soon as possible.”
But those who had lost loved ones in the fighting rejected the concessions outright.
Svitlana Dobrynska, whose son died fighting, says: “We don’t have the opportunity to launch an offensive to recapture our territories.
The 57-year-old adds: “But to prevent people from dying, we can simply stop military operations, sign some kind of agreement, but not give up our territories.”

Trump-Putin meeting<\/b>
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected Donald Trump’s suggestion that Ukraine will have to give up territory in any potential peace deal.
It comes after the US leader announced a summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska to take place on Friday.
“I think my instinct really tells me that we have a shot at it,” Trump told reporters yesterday.
“There’ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both.”

However, Ukraine is not in control of any Russian land after it was pushed out of Kursk.
This morning, Zelenskyy responded: “Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier.”
He warned that any agreements made in Alaska against Ukraine “will not achieve anything. These are stillborn decisions. They are unworkable decisions”.
Allies of Ukraine are worried Kyiv is being sidelined and might be forced to swallow or reject a peace plan worked up by Moscow and Washington alone.
Military analyst Michael Clarke<\/a><\/b> is holding out little hope for the meeting, given Trump’s team are out of their depth…
Sanctions?<\/b>
Absent from Donald Trump’s social media posts is his deadline for Putin to end the war. 
He had threatened Russia with sanctions should it not cease its invasion by 8 August.
The Alaska meeting may have allowed Putin to sidestep sanctions – and wouldn’t be the first time in this conflict that the Kremlin has given just enough to keep Trump onside without actually changing anything on the battlefield.
UK security meeting<\/b>
At the behest of the US, a meeting between national security advisers is taking place at Chevening, the foreign secretary’s official country residence in Kent, where US vice president JD Vance and his family are staying.
Keir Starmer also held a call with Zelenskyy, one of a number of European leaders to do so.
Attacks continue<\/b>
Russia has continued its nightly attacks on Ukraine.
At least eight people were killed last night, Ukraine says, with more than twice that injured.
This included two men being killed when Russia attacked a bus, the country’s police say.
US officials have briefed their European counterparts on Russia’s demands for ending its war in Ukraine, CNN reports.
The US outlet says Moscow offered to stop its war in exchange for massive territorial concessions by Ukraine.
However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier today that Ukraine wouldn’t be handing over territory as part of any peace deal.
Vladimir Putin reportedly presented a plan to special envoy Steve Witkoff during his visit to Moscow that demanded huge parts of eastern Ukraine as well as Crimea.
CNN says the plan would freeze the current frontlines, citing Western officials briefed on the matter.
Donald Trump says he is going to hold a press conference on Monday.
The US leader says it is about stopping violent crime in Washington DC.
However, given Trump’s tendency to range across a number of topics on any occasion, Ukraine could be addressed.
Similarly, if the president takes questions, it’s likely he’ll face questions on the latest in Ukraine – but what could he be asked about?
Here are some potential topics Trump could be asked about:
Russia says it has shot down 27 Ukrainian drones today.
The Ministry of Defence claims the attacks took place between midday local time to 3.30pm (around 10am to 1.30pm UK time).
One of the drones was claimed to have been flying towards Moscow.
The ministry of defence says drones were also shot down in the regions of Bryansk, Kaluga,  Krasnodar Krai and Ryazan as well.
Hot on the heels of speaking to British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken to three European leaders.
France<\/b>
Zelenskyy says he has spoken with Emmanuel Macron about “the diplomatic situation.”
He adds: “Ukraine, France, and all our partners are ready to work as productively as possible for the sake of real peace. It is truly important that the Russians do not succeed in deceiving anyone again. 
“We all need a genuine end to the war and reliable security foundations for Ukraine and other European nations.”
Denmark<\/b>
Zelenskyy also spoke to Denmark’s Mette Frederiksen.
“We see no changes in Russia’s position – the Russians still refuse to stop the killings, still invest in the war, and still push the idea of ‘exchanging’ Ukrainian territory for Ukrainian territory, with consequences that guarantee nothing except more favorable positions for Russia to resume the war,” Zelenskyy says.
Estonia<\/b>
Zelenskyy also spoke to Estonia’s Kristen Michal, discussing his country’s possible path towards joining the EU.
“We share the view that security decisions for Ukraine matter for everyone in Europe. We also discussed matters at the EU level, in particular the situation in the negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union,” the Ukrainian leader adds.
The UK is hosting a security summit including its US, Ukrainian and European counterparts today.

For Ukraine, its exhausted, brave soldiers, its thousands of bereaved families mourning their dead, and its beleaguered president, it is exactly what they feared it would be . 
They fear the compromise they will be forced to make will be messy, costly, unfair and ultimately beneficial to the invading tyrant who brought death and destruction to their sovereign land. 
‘We will never accept that’<\/b>
Six weeks ago I spoke to President Zelenskyy in London. 
I put it to him in our Sky News interview that Presidents Trump and Putin were heading towards making a deal between themselves, a grand bargain, in which Ukraine was but one piece on the chess board. 
Zelensky smiled as if to acknowledge the reality ahead. 
He paused and then he said this: “We are not going to be a card in talks between great nations, and we will never accept that\u2026 I definitely do not want to see global deals between America and Russia. 
“We don’t need it. We are a separate story, a victim of Russian aggression and we will not reward it.”

It was a response that betrayed his greatest fear… that this will become essentially a Trump negotiation in which Zelenskyy and Ukraine will be told “take it or leave it”.
And, by the way, if you “leave it,” then it will be painful. 
Harsh realities<\/b>
It’s the prospect that now confronts Zelenskyy as Trump and Putin plough ahead on a course that has clear attractions for both of them. 
Of course, Zelenskyy is right to say there can be no deal without Ukraine. 
But there are harsh realities at play here. 
President Trump wants a deal on Ukraine – any deal – that he can chalk up as a win. 
He wants it badly and he wants it now. 
It’s the impediment to a broader strategic deal with Putin and he wants it out of the way. 
It is what he does and it’s the way he does it . 
And President Putin knows it. 
He knows Trump, he sees an opportunity in Trump and he can’t get across Russia to Alaska fast enough. 
He will be back at global diplomacy’s top table. 
Always a deal to be done<\/b>
Make no mistake, when Trump says he just wants to stop the killing, he means it. 
Such wanton loss of young lives offends him. He keeps saying it.
He sees war, by and large, as an unnecessary waste of life and of money. Deals are there to be done. There’s always a deal. 
Sadly for Ukraine, in this case, it is unlikely to be a fair deal. 
How can any deal be “fair” when you are the victim of outrageous brutality and heinous crimes. 
But it may well be the deal they have to take unless they want to fight an increasingly one-sided war with much less help from President Trump and America. 
A senior UK diplomat told me yesterday that if things turn out as feared,  it should not be called a land for peace deal. 
It should be called annexation “because that\u2019s what it is”.
A bad peace vs no peace?<\/b>
But here’s the rub. 
Peace, calm, the end of the nightly terror of war has much to recommend it. 
In short, a bad peace can often seem better than no peace.  
But, ultimately, rewarded dictators always come back for more.
If Ukraine has to accept a bad peace, then it will want clear security guarantees to make sure it cannot happen again. 
It is the very least they deserve. 
There is much at stake in Alaska . 
Ukraine’s security service says it has hit a Russian drone storage warehouse.
The SBU says it hit a “logistics hub where ready-to-use ‘Shahedas’ and foreign components for them are stored.” 
It adds that the warehouse was located in the Republic of Tatarstan, east of Moscow.
Shahed drones<\/b>
Shahed drones are supplied to Russia by Iran and are important in Moscow’s nightly attacks on Ukraine.
A so-called suicide drone, it earned its name because the drones are flown into targets, exploding on impact.
According to some reports, the drone was first used by the Houthis, an Iranian-backed militia, before Russia.
The drones reportedly cost between $20,000 and $50,000 – making them a relatively cheap method to attack.
Former national security adviser Sir Mark Lyall Grant has broken down what he thinks both the US and Russian leaders want from the summit in Alaska on Friday.
For the US…<\/b>
For the US, Sir Mark says Trump will likely hope to walk out of Friday’s meeting “able to announce a deal”.
He explains: “I think Trump would like to actually be able to announce a deal next Friday and say, look, I’ve agreed how to end this war and then present that to President Zelensky.”
For Russia…<\/b>
Sir Mark says Russia will already be seeing the summit as a victory – a sentiment we’ve reportedly heard today.
“Russia will want to talk not just about Ukraine, but also about the bilateral relations, economic potential, the frozen north, etc., and will present this as a sort of end of Putin’s isolation in the West,” he adds.
