UN chief Antonio Guterres says it’s now “undeniable” that Gaza is now on the brink of famine following today’s report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification.
The UN-backed food security body said famine thresholds have now been reached in most of Gaza, warning that “widespread starvation malnutrition and disease” were driving deaths.
“Palestinians in Gaza are enduring a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions. This is not a warning. It is a reality unfolding before our eyes,” Guterres said.
“The trickle of aid must become an ocean. Food, water, medicine, and fuel must flow in waves and without obstruction.
“This nightmare must end.”

British Palestinians have called on Sir Keir Starmer to take “immediate, concrete” steps on Gaza instead of “focusing on a symbolic gesture” of recognising it as a state ahead of an emergency cabinet meeting.
The prime minister recalled his cabinet ministers from parliamentary recess for a meeting today where they planned to discuss what the UK’s next steps should be, after Sir Keir held meetings with Donald Trump yesterday.
Ahead of the cabinet meeting, the British Palestinian Committee (BPC), which represents the experiences of Palestinians in the UK, sent Sir Keir a letter urging him to take actions they say could make a real difference to people in Gaza.
The BPC said recognising Palestine as a state is now “symbolic” as it “will not end the genocide and must not be used to deflect from accountability”.
Food aid is still being parachuted into Gaza as aid agencies and countries hurry to make the most of the open skies while they last.
Yesterday, UN aid chief Tom Fletcher said Israel’s military pause to allow aid into Gaza could only last “a few days”, making the next 48 hours “make or break”.
Sky News travelled from Jordan on a plane yesterday that dropped aid into Gaza.

Israel has summoned the Dutch ambassador after the Netherlands imposed a travel ban on two right-wing Israeli ministers.
A spokesperson for Gideon Sa’ar confirmed the move had been taken.
In our 7.54 post, we reported on the decision from the Netherlands to not just impose travel bans on Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich but also to summon the ambassador as well.
It reflects the international pressure that Israel finds itself under as the situation in Gaza grows increasingly dire.
Christian leaders in Jerusalem have condemned what they described as “yet another violent assault” on the town of Taybeh.
Taybeh is the only entirely Christian village in the Muslim-majority West Bank.
In a statement, the patriarchs and heads of churches in Jerusalem said: “Several vehicles were set ablaze and hateful graffiti was sprayed.”
It said the incident was “part of an alarming pattern of settler violence against West Bank communities”.
The religious leaders also criticised the response of Israeli police, framing it only as property damage.
For context:<\/b> This was just the latest in a string of recent settler attacks on the village, located near Ramallah, where the Palestinian Authority is based.
The West Bank has seen a rise in settler violence since the 7 October attack.

Palestinians continue to gather at charity food kitchens in Nuseirat, central Gaza.
The kitchens are vital lifelines for many.
It comes as a leading authority on food scarcity warned the thresholds for a famine had been reached in much of Gaza – see our 9.23 post.
The UN food agency has said that nowhere near enough aid is getting into Gaza.
This is despite new pauses in fighting from Israel explicitly to get more aid into the enclave.
Ross Smith, of the World Food Programme (WFP), speaking at a news briefing, said: “We’re getting approximately 50% of what we’re requesting into Gaza since these humanitarian pauses started on Sunday.”
He added: “We have not gotten the authorisation, the permission, to move in the volumes that we’ve requested.”
The WFP says that approaching half a million people are enduring famine-like conditions, with 90,000 women and children in need of specialist nutrition.

Images of emaciated children have been shared globally.
At the weekend, Israel announced daily pauses to fighting in three areas in Gaza and new corridors for aid.
But supply remains far short of demand, aid agencies warn.
A Palestinian doctor has warned: “We are out of options, and we are running out of time.”
Dr Salha, working at the al Awda Hospital in northern Gaza, warned of the dire circumstances they said the hospital was operating under.
Salha said: “We used to care for 200 women and children a day, now it’s over 2,000.
“We simply can’t cope. Malnutrition is devastating mothers and newborns. 
“We’re seeing a sharp rise in caesarean sections, miscarriages, and babies born underweight.”
Salha warned they were running out of vital supplies for newborns, and that their own staff were surviving on just one meal a day.
“Three colleagues collapsed in our emergency department last week due to hunger, while working around the clock to care for patients. This is a humanitarian catastrophe,” Salha said.
Funerals are being held for Palestinians killed in recent Israeli attacks.
Medics at the al Awda Hospital, in Nuseirat, central Gaza, said an Israeli strike on a house early this morning killed Palestinians.
It isn’t clear how many people were killed, and it comes after at least 78 Palestinians were killed yesterday – see our 7.05 post.
Funerals are now being held for the dead, with at least nine bodies visible in pictures shared by the AP news agency.
Mourners were seen crying and holding one another, as the dead were carried past them.
