Donald Trump’s announcement he will sell weapons to NATO to give to Ukraine could learn to the rearmament of Kyiv’s military forces, Sky News’s security and defence analyst Professor Michael Clarke<\/a> <\/b>said.
The US president “didn’t give many details” but confirmed the Patriot anti-missile system will be sold to NATO.
He noted Trump did not say what offensive weapons will be sold to ATO and “we’ve got to wait and see”.
He added: “In theory this could begin a process of rearming Ukraine with certain key weapon systems. But we don’t know what they are yet, and it will be certainly a few days before we have any clarity on what the front end of this package is.
“What the offensive systems are that Ukraine really needs to push the Russians back or have a chance of pushing them back, we don’t know yet, but in principle, if the Europeans are prepared to buy them, America is now prepared to sell them”
Earlier we reported that Ukraine’s defence minister Rustem Umerov was holding a meeting with the US special envoy Keith Kellogg in Kyiv.
Umerov has since announced that the pair discussed joint weapons production in Ukraine and Europe, the Ukrainian army’s battlefield needs and sanctions on Russia.
Before they met, Kellogg held talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said the pair “discussed the path to peace and what we can practically do to bring it closer” (see 12.19 post).
Zelenskyy made a point of thanking Kellogg and saying he was grateful to Donald Trump.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his gratitude to Donald Trump “for his readiness to support the protection” of Ukrainian lives.
The Ukrainian president made the remarks during his nightly video address after the US president announced he was selling arms to NATO to help Ukraine. Mr Trump also gave Russia 50 days to reach a ceasefire or face increased sanctions.
Mr Zelenskyy said he held a “productive” discussion in Kyiv with Trump’s special representative to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg.
Donald Trump has made “a significant policy shift” in his attitude towards Ukraine and Russia, US correspondent Mark Stone<\/a> has said.
He said the US president wants his legacy to be that of a peacemaker in many world conflicts.
Comparing Trump’s news conference with NATO secretary general Mark Rutte today to his argumentative meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February, he said: “It is remarkable how this is a seismic shift.
“He hasn’t until now been able to recognise that Russia is the aggressor in this. He has not been able to side America with the Ukrainians. That today has changed, and that is a big moment indeed.”
He said the details of what arms the US will sell to NATO to give to Ukraine “are a bit woolly” and we do not yet know whether he will sell offensive as well as defensive weapons.
“Because Trump is Trump, he’s framing all this as a deal, as a transaction – he’s a transactional president,” he said.
“In order to placate his base and those within his own America First coalition, he’s saying to them don’t worry, we are going to get a whole load of money out of this because we are selling these weapons to the Europeans.”
He added: “Be in no doubt this is a significant policy shift by the Trump administration.”
Ukraine “witnessed a real breakthrough” in Donald Trump’s views towards Vladimir Putin today, its former prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk told Sky News presenter Mark Austin<\/a><\/b>.
“I consider this a U-turn or about-face,” he said of the US president’s announcement of more weapons for Ukraine and threat to hit Russia with greater sanctions.
“My gut feeling is President Trump has realised that Putin wanted to cheat him and deceive him,” he said.
“It means he has taken this personally, and he has realised that Putin is a bully, and he doesn’t want to be humiliated by a designated war criminal.”
Asked if he thought the announcement would bring the Russian president to the negotiating table, Yatsenyuk said: “I don’t believe that this bastard is ready to negotiate, frankly speaking.
“But I believe it’s enough to help Ukraine to fight, to preserve its statehood, to help Ukraine win this fight.”
Giving his assessment of the new weapons for Ukraine, he said: “This will definitely upgrade Ukraine’s war chest. We will have more tools in our chest and more influence.
“This will severely affect and severely degrade the Russian military.”
The Russian stock market rose by 2.7% after Donald Trump warned he would impose “very severe tariffs” on Russia if no deal to end the Ukraine war is made within 50 days, according to the Moscow Stock Exchange.
The Russian rouble also reversed losses against the dollar and rose against China’s yuan, the most traded foreign currency in Russia.
“Trump performed below market expectations,” analyst Artyom Nikolayev from Invest Era told Reuters.
“He gave 50 days during which the Russian leadership can come up with something and extend the negotiation track.
“Moreover, Trump likes to postpone and extend such deadlines.” 
Speaking from the Oval Office in the White House, Donald Trump has said he thought he had a deal on ending Russia’s war in Ukraine “numerous times”.
Hosting a White House summit of faith and business leaders, Trump says: “I’d get home, I’d say first lady, I had the most wonderful talk with Vladimir, I think we’re finished.
“And then I’ll turn on the television, or she’ll say to me one time, ‘well that’s strange, because they just bombed a nursing home’.”
The crowd laughed and Trump added: “They said, what? So, we don’t like that.”
He also said he had a “great” meeting with NATO secretary general Mark Rutte.

A senior Russian politician has said “our mood is not affected at all” by Donald Trump’s threats of 100% tariffs if Russia does not agree to a deal to end its war in Ukraine.
“If this is all that Trump had in mind to say about Ukraine today, then all the steam has gone out,” said Konstantin Kosachev, vice speaker of Moscow’s upper house of parliament.
He said Europe “will have to fork out more and more” after “the free cheese for them turned out to be in a mousetrap”.
“There is only one beneficiary – the US military-industrial complex,” he added.
Ukraine “can continue to fight to the last Ukrainian”, Kosachev said, adding: “And in 50 days, oh how much can change both on the battlefield and in the mood of those in power in the US and NATO.
“The main thing is that our mood is not affected at all.”
Donald Trump threatened Russia with “severe tariffs” of “about 100%” if it does not strike a deal to end the Ukraine war in 50 days, calling them “secondary tariffs”.
The White House has now clarified the US president means he will impose 100% tariffs on Russia, and secondary sanctions on countries that buy oil from Russia, if a deal isn’t struck within 50 days.
