Ukraine “witnessed a real breakthrough” in Donald Trump’s views towards Vladimir Putin today, its former prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk told Sky News presenter Mark Austin<\/a><\/b>.
“I consider this a U-turn or about-face,” he said of the US president’s announcement of more weapons for Ukraine and threat to hit Russia with greater sanctions.
“My gut feeling is President Trump has realised that Putin wanted to cheat him and deceive him,” he said.
“It means he has taken this personally, and he has realised that Putin is a bully, and he doesn’t want to be humiliated by a designated war criminal.”
Asked if he thought the announcement would bring the Russian president to the negotiating table, Yatsenyuk said: “I don’t believe that this bastard is ready to negotiate, frankly speaking.
“But I believe it’s enough to help Ukraine to fight, to preserve its statehood, to help Ukraine win this fight.”
Giving his assessment of the new weapons for Ukraine, he said: “This will definitely upgrade Ukraine’s war chest. We will have more tools in our chest and more influence.
“This will severely affect and severely degrade the Russian military.
The Russian stock market rose by 2.7% after Donald Trump warned he would impose “very severe tariffs” on Russia if no deal to end the Ukraine war is made within 50 days, according to the Moscow Stock Exchange.
The Russian rouble also reversed losses against the dollar and rose against China’s yuan, the most traded foreign currency in Russia.
“Trump performed below market expectations,” analyst Artyom Nikolayev from Invest Era told Reuters.
“He gave 50 days during which the Russian leadership can come up with something and extend the negotiation track.
“Moreover, Trump likes to postpone and extend such deadlines.” 
Speaking from the Oval Office in the White House, Donald Trump has said he thought he had a deal on ending Russia’s war in Ukraine “numerous times”.
Hosting a White House summit of faith and business leaders, Trump says: “I’d get home, I’d say first lady, I had the most wonderful talk with Vladimir, I think we’re finished.
“And then I’ll turn on the television, or she’ll say to me one time, ‘well that’s strange, because they just bombed a nursing home’.”
The crowd laughed and Trump added: “They said, what? So, we don’t like that.”
He also said he had a “great” meeting with NATO secretary general Mark Rutte.

A senior Russian politician has said “our mood is not affected at all” by Donald Trump’s threats of 100% tariffs if Russia does not agree to a deal to end its war in Ukraine.
“If this is all that Trump had in mind to say about Ukraine today, then all the steam has gone out,” said Konstantin Kosachev, vice speaker of Moscow’s upper house of parliament.
He said Europe “will have to fork out more and more” after “the free cheese for them turned out to be in a mousetrap”.
“There is only one beneficiary – the US military-industrial complex,” he added.
Ukraine “can continue to fight to the last Ukrainian”, Kosachev said, adding: “And in 50 days, oh how much can change both on the battlefield and in the mood of those in power in the US and NATO.
“The main thing is that our mood is not affected at all.”
Donald Trump threatened Russia with “severe tariffs” of “about 100%” if it does not strike a deal to end the Ukraine war in 50 days, calling them “secondary tariffs”.
The White House has now clarified the US president means he will impose 100% tariffs on Russia, and secondary sanctions on countries that buy oil from Russia, if a deal isn’t struck within 50 days.

He highlights the contrast between the news conference Trump and Rutte had and the disastrous meeting he had with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February, when “American support for the Ukrainian cause could hardly have seemed further than Kyiv needed it to be”.
He says: “The whole context and the theme there was that Ukraine was the victim – this from a president who had blamed Ukraine for starting this conflict in the first place.”
But “Trump could have been tougher”, he adds. “He’s giving Putin that breathing space – 50 days. That is a long time given the aggression with which Putin is prosecuting this war.
“But right now, if you’re the NATO secretary general, you’ll be quite happy with what you have.”
Trade is “great for settling wars,” Donald Trump has said, after he announced a new weapons package for Ukraine and threatened Russia with higher sanctions.
“This is a chance for peace,” the US president said.
He said he thought he had a deal with Russia on ending the Ukraine war “about four times” but “here were are still talking”.
“I thought we should have had a deal done a long time ago, but it just keeps going on and on and on,” he added.
Trump also blamed the war on his predecessor Joe Biden, calling it “a Biden war”.
He said he speaks to Vladimir Putin “a lot” and claimed the Russian leader “knows what a fair deal is”.
Trump said he used to talk to Putin about Ukraine “a lot” and “it was the apple of his eye”.
He expressed some frustration, saying he has held recent calls with Putin where afterwards he would say “that was a nice phone call” but then “missiles are launched into Kyiv or some other city, and that happens three or four times”.

Donald Trump has said he has made a deal to sell weapons to NATO to help Ukraine.
The US president said he was going to be sending “top of the line weapons” to NATO, which will then be able to send them on to Ukraine.
“We’ve made a deal today where we are going to be sending them weapons, and they’re going to be paying for them,” he said.
Trump said NATO members, not American taxpayers, would cover the cost of the weapons.
The war has “got to stop”, he added. “This is billions of dollars worth of military equipment which is going to be purchased from the United States, going to NATO, and that’s going to be quickly distributed to the battlefield.”
He said Patriot missile batteries will be sent “within days” and “will start arriving soon”.
