The 12 forts built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj are recognised internationally, marking a proud moment for Maharashtra, State government informed.\u00a0
The 11 forts in Maharashtra and 1 in Tamil Nadu, have been granted UNESCO World Heritage Site status after proposal for this recognition was prepared by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums under the Department of Cultural Affairs.\u00a0
The list of forts includes, Raigad, Pratapgad, Panhala, Shivneri, Lohgad, Salher, Sindhudurg, Suvarnadurg, Vijaydurg, and Khanderi in Maharashtra, and Gingee in Tamil Nadu<\/a>.
\u201cThese forts have been recognized for their outstanding universal value, including their military significance, architectural style, and cultural importance. The recognition is a testament to the bravery, architectural traditions, and Swarajya [<\/i>self-rule] of Maharashtra,\u201d as per the CMO<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0
In February, Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister and Information Technology Ashish Shelar-led delegation went to Paris to get UNESCO World Heritage status for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj\u2019s forts under the concept of \u2018Maratha Military Landscape of India.\u00a0
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar congratulated citizens of Maharashtra said, \u201cthis is moment of pride and an historic occasion. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj\u2019s vision of establishing \u201cHindavi Swarajya\u201d (self-rule) was supported by these forts, these forts united people from various castes and communities to build a kingdom that prioritised the welfare of its citizens.\u201d\u00a0
The CMO informed that the Prime Minister\u2019s Office selected the proposal for Maratha military architecture from Maharashtra and sent it to UNESCO and highlighted the contribution of architect Dr. Shikha Jain and Director of Archaeology Dr. Tejas Garge for receiving the UNESCO status.\u00a0
