He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/09\/trump-announces-90-day-tariff-pause-for-at-least-some-countries.html\" target=\"_blank\">paused those rates<\/a> a week later, while setting a new 90-day deadline to renegotiate them.<br \/>That deadline was set to expire Wednesday.<br \/>CNN host Dana Bash responded to Bessent on Sunday, saying, \u201cThere\u2019s basically a new deadline,\u201d prompting Bessent to push back.<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s not a new deadline. We are saying this is when it\u2019s happening,\u201d Bessent said. \u201cIf you want to speed things up, have at it. If you want to go back to the old rate, that\u2019s your choice.\u201d<br \/>On Friday, Trump, too, referred to an Aug. 1 deadline, raising questions about whether the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/economy\/trump-tariff-pause-expires-date-trade-deals-countries-what-to-know-rcna216402\" target=\"_blank\"> July 9 deadline <\/a>still stands. A White House spokesperson did not provide a comment when asked to clarify whether the April 2 tariff rates would resume July 9 or Aug. 1.<br \/>The president has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/27\/trump-tariff-trade-deadline-july.html\" target=\"_blank\">recently given shifting descriptions <\/a>of how firm the July 9 deadline is, saying at the end of June, \u201cWe can extend it, we can shorten it,\u201d only to double down on it several days later, saying he was not thinking about extending it.<br \/>Shortly after midnight Friday, Trump referred to an Aug. 1 timeline, telling reporters that the April 2 tariff rates would resume at the start of August.<br \/>Asked whether the U.S. would be flexible with any countries about on the July 9 deadline, Trump said, \u201cNot really.\u201d<br \/>\u201cThey\u2019ll start to pay on Aug. 1,\u201d he added. \u201cThe money will start to come into the United States on Aug. 1, OK, in pretty much all cases.\u201d<br \/>Trump said Friday that the administration would start sending letters to countries, adding, \u201cI think by the 9th they\u2019ll be fully covered.\u201d<br \/>\u201cThey\u2019ll range in value from maybe 60% or 70% tariffs to 10% and 20% tariffs, but they\u2019re going to be starting to go out sometime tomorrow,\u201d Trump said overnight on Friday. \u201cWe\u2019ve done the final form, and it\u2019s basically going to explain what the countries are going to be paying in tariffs.\u201d<br \/>Trump said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114809528606729733\" target=\"_blank\">Truth Social post<\/a> late Sunday evening that tariff letters would be delivered starting at noon on Monday. <br \/>Bessent also said Sunday that \u201cmany of these countries never even contacted us.\u201d<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/economics\/how-tariffs-work-why-trump-wants-them-who-pays-for-them-rcna200015\" target=\"_blank\">Tariffs are paid<\/a> by importers \u2014 which can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/specials\/house-construction-cost-tariff-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">pass on part or all<\/a> of the costs to consumers \u2014 and not necessarily by entities in the goods\u2019 country of origin.<br \/>The White House had initially projected confidence that dozens of countries would try to make deals. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/meet-press-april-13-2025-n1311913\" target=\"_blank\">NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press\u201d<\/a> in April that \u201cwe\u2019ve got 90 deals in 90 days possibly pending here.\u201d Late last month, Trump said, \u201cEverybody wants to make a deal,\u201d and after he announced sweeping tariffs on April 2, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/trump-trade-deals-coming-rcna205340\" target=\"_blank\">he said<\/a> countries were \u201ccalling us up, kissing my a&#8211;.\u201d <br \/>\u201cThey are,\u201d he said in April. \u201cThey are dying to make a deal. \u2018Please, please, sir, make a deal. I\u2019ll do anything.\u2019\u201d<br \/>The renewed uncertainty is likely to further upset markets, where stock futures went lower Friday after Trump mentioned the country letters.
