Borussia Dortmund<\/a> have booked their Club World Cup quarter-final place after a 2-1 win against Monterrey.<\/strong>
Serhou Guirassy got the goals for the Bundesliga<\/a> side with two well-taken first-half finishes. German Berterame headed Monterrey back into the game straight after half-time but they could not find an equaliser.
A late Sergio Ramos header flew agonisingly close to the top corner as Dortmund held on for the victory.
They will face Real Madrid<\/a> in the quarter-final on Saturday, but there will be no Bellingham derby as Jobe will be suspended after being shown a 28th-minute yellow card, his second of the tournament.

Saturday's quarter-final will be the third time Jude Bellingham has faced Dortmund since leaving the club two years ago.
He was part of the Real Madrid team that beat them in the Champions League final in 2024, and the Spaniards won again when they met in the league stage of this season's competition.
Bellingham didn't score in either of those games, but he did provide an assist in both.
With Jobe Bellingham suspended for Borussia Dortmund's quarter-final against Real Madrid, we won't be getting the Bellingham derby against his brother Jude, which is a real shame.
Instead, in terms of storylines, we'll have to settle for Jude facing his former side Dortmund. Jude spent three seasons with the German club from 2020 to 2023, winning one major title, the DFB-Pokal in 2021.

And so the quarter-final line-up is complete. On one side of the draw, there is Palmeiras vs Chelsea on Friday afternoon, followed by Fluminense vs Al Hilal. On the other, there is Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich on Saturday afternoon, followed by Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund.
It makes for a reasonable geographic spread: while there is the expected majority from Europe (two from Germany and one apiece from England, France and Spain), there are also two teams from Brazil and one from Saudi Arabia. One European finalist is guaranteed, but on the other side of the draw it is Chelsea vs the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

It's not often that you see Borussia Dortmund generate less shots or hold less possession of the ball than their opponents, but they led in the only stat that truly matters.
Still, an impressive performance by Monterrey, who had several chances to score an equaliser in the second half.
Just like Juventus today, Dortmund will be another European rival for Real Madrid in the knockout stage. Madrid and Dortmund met in the Champions League this past season, with the Spaniards winning 5-2 at the Bernabeu behind Vinicius Junior's hat-trick in the second half. They also met in the 2024 final of the UCL, with Madrid prevailing 2-0 thanks to goals from Dani Carvajal and Vini Jr as seen above.
The Guirassy-Adeyemi duo has shown their potential, but Dortmund have also shown defensive weaknesses today that Los Blancos should know how to exploit.
It's a pity we won't be able to enjoy the special Jude-Jobe duel.

On tonight\u2019s evidence, Dortmund have to be considered outsiders heading into the quarter-final. They rushed into a 2-0 lead with two delightful link-ups between Adeyemi and Guirassy tonight, but they ended up grateful for some wasteful finishing from a spirited Monterrey side. Real Madrid might not be so forgiving in the next round.

Monterrey play on for a second before the referee halts play to allow Guirassy to recover, but instead Guirassy leaps back to his feet the second the whistle is blown. He protests the missed foul call but the referee points to his watch, signifying this time will be added on. Quite a comical moment.
We're into five minutes of stoppage time now.

We've seen it so many times that I think we're all sure Ramos is going to have a chance to score in the closing minutes.

The odd thing is that there is so much space and opportunity for Dortmund to keep possession for long periods here. Given that they are winning, they could keep the ball for the rest of the game, and yet they are still giving it up and allowing Monterrey to have a chance in this game.
