It’s walking a tightrope, attempting to maintain good relations with both Iran and the United States at the same time. <br \/>Iraq’s mostly Shia Muslim government is religiously aligned with Iran, but the country is reliant on America for helping maintain stability and security. <br \/>American military bases and military personnel stationed in Iraq are now targets. <br \/> After the US launched its strikes inside Iran, Iranian state TV declared every American citizen or soldier in the region a “legitimate target”. <br \/>The Iraqi security forces include Shia militia groups, some of whom have already warned that they too would attack American bases and personnel in the country. <br \/>The government here may find it difficult to control these groups, whatever they may say publicly. <br \/>Iraq has condemned Israel for using their airspace to launch attacks on Iran, although in reality there is nothing they can do to stop it. <br \/>Remember, Iraq borders Iran, so their geographic proximity is important.<br \/>In his address to the nation, President Trump reminded the American people that US military personnel had lost life and limb in roadside bomb attacks from technology exported from Iran into Iraq after the Gulf War in 2003. <br \/>The whole region is now on tenterhooks waiting to see what happens next, and Iraq is right in the centre of it.<br \/>Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation has called the attack on three of the country’s nuclear sites a “blatant violation of international law”.<br \/>In a statement shortly after the US strike, the organisation – which is responsible for operating nuclear energy in the country – said the strike had happened under the “complicity” of the International Atomic Energy Agency.<br \/>“This organisation has placed on its agenda all necessary actions to defend the rights of the noble Iranian people, including legal follow-ups,” the statement said.<br \/>It added it would not allow the development of Iran’s “national industry” – an apparent reference to the country’s nuclear development – to be stopped.<br \/>The White House has just released images from inside the Situation Room as Donald Trump held a National Security meeting on Saturday.<br \/>The images show the president, Vice President JD Vance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other US officials watch on as strikes were carried out on three of Iran’s nuclear facilities.<br \/>Just before Donald Trump spoke, the head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog said he was “gravely alarmed” by the US strikes on Iran’s facilities sites.<br \/>Rafael Grossi said American strikes on the facilities at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan were a “dangerous escalation” and a “direct threat to international peace and security”.<br \/>We have just heard from Donald Trump, who gave a short statement after the US launched strikes against three of Iran’s nuclear facilities. <br \/>Here is what he said in full:<br \/>A short time ago, the U.S. military carried out massive precision strikes on the three key nuclear facilities in the Iranian regime: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. <br \/>Everybody heard those names for years as they built this horribly destructive enterprise. <br \/>Our objective was the destruction of Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world’s number one state sponsor of terror. <br \/>Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success. <br \/>Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated. <br \/>Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks would be far greater and a lot easier. <br \/>For 40 years Iran has been saying death to America, death to Israel. They have been killing our people, blowing off their arms, blowing off their legs with roadside bombs. That was their speciality. <br \/>We lost over a thousand people and hundreds of thousands throughout the Middle East and around the world have died as a direct result of their hate. <br \/>In particular, so many were killed by their general, Qassem Soleimani. <br \/>I decided a long time ago that I would not let this happen. <br \/>It will not continue. <br \/>I want to thank and congratulate Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu. We worked as a team like perhaps no team has ever worked before, and we’ve gone a long way to erasing this horrible threat to Israel. <br \/>I want to thank the Israeli military for the wonderful job they’ve done. And most importantly, I want to congratulate the great American patriots who flew those magnificent machines tonight and all of the United States military on an operation the likes of which the world has not seen in many, many decades. <br \/>Hopefully, we will no longer need their services in this capacity. I hope that so. <br \/>I also want to congratulate the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Rosen Kane, spectacular general and all of the brilliant military minds involved in this attack. <br \/>With all of that being said, this cannot continue. <br \/>There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran, far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days. <br \/>Remember, there are many targets left. <br \/>Tonight’s was the most difficult of them all by far, and perhaps the most lethal. <br \/>But if peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speed and skill. Most of them can be taken out in a matter of minutes. <br \/>There’s no military in the world that could have done what we did tonight. Not even close. There’s never been a military that could do what took place just a little while ago.<br \/>Tomorrow, General Kaine, Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth will have a press conference at 8am at the Pentagon. <br \/>I want to just thank everybody and in particular, God, I want to just say, we love you, God, and we love our great military. Protect them. God bless the Middle East. God bless Israel, and God bless America. <br \/>Thank you very much. Thank you.<br \/>Donald Trump says Iran’s nuclear facilities have been “completely and totally obliterated”.<br \/>He called the strikes a “spectacular military success”, without going into detail about the attack itself.<br \/>“Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace,” he says. “If they do not, future attacks would be far greater and a lot easier.”<br \/>He adds: “There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days.
