Donald Trump’s statement yesterday evening, that a decision would be made within two weeks on whether to intervene, buys the US time not just politically but militarily as well, our military analyst Michael Clarke<\/a> says.
He has just been speaking to Breakfast presenter Anna Jones<\/a>.
Clarke says that Trump’s statement “gives himself some flexibility” and works well politically to avoid being bounced into a decision.
However, Clarke adds it was also important for military decisions as it opens up more options for the US.
He explains: “It makes sense in a way, for the Americans as a policy machine to give themselves a bit more time for military preparations.
“If there is going to be an American strike, backing in behind the Israeli operations, then it may not be a single strike, it may take a while, and it may lead to a bigger engagement, and that’s the great problem.
“So for the Americans, getting more stuff in place is quite important.”
He adds that diplomatic routes seem to bring the US “back to the 2015 deal” with Iran to control its nuclear production – the one Trump scrapped in his first term.

Iran’s air defences have been activated in Tehran, state media has said.
It could signal another Israeli attack.
Israel has seemingly had free rein over the skies of the capital and parts of western Iran in recent days.
We’ll bring you any developments.
Key buildings at a nuclear plant in Iran were damaged in an Israeli strike, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said.
Early on Thursday, the Khondab heavy water plant and reactor were targeted by an Israeli strike.
The reactor was hit and damaged, but yesterday the IAEA said it had not been operational at the time and contained “no nuclear material”.
It added that it had no information on a hit on the neighbouring plant.
But in an update today, the IAEA added that “key buildings” at the production plant were damaged.
This was said to include the distillation unit.
A reminder for context:<\/b> Israel said it began these attacks last Friday because it claimed Iran was close to making a nuclear bomb.
Dismantling Iran’s nuclear infrastructure is a key goal of Israel’s strikes, and it has continued striking a number of sites in recent days.
Lisa Nandy has just been telling Sky News that Donald Trump’s two-week time window is a good thing as it will help “concentrate minds.”
Speaking to Breakfast presenter Anna Jones<\/a><\/b>, the culture secretary also defended continued British efforts to de-escalate the fighting in the Middle East through diplomacy.
She said: “This is the nature of diplomacy, you fail every time until you finally succeed.
“You have to work with urgency and haste, and you have to use every diplomatic tool at your disposal.
“It’s why David Lammy is in Geneva today with leading European counterparts and the Iranian foreign minister having those conversations.”(See our 6.22 post for more on that.)
Nandy went on to add that President Trump’s two-week window – giving time Iran to make a deal before potential US intervention – was “important”.
“It will concentrate minds and it gives us a clear timescale in which we can work to de-escalate,” she said.
Nandy wouldn’t be drawn on whether the UK would let the US use one of its key military bases to strike at Iranian nuclear sites, should it choose to do so.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei posted on social media, seemingly implying that Iran had launched fresh attacks on Israel.

Iran’s internet shut off continues today.
The move makes it increasingly difficult to get information in and out of the country.
It has not only blocked the public from seeing news from abroad, but it also restricts people outside from reading Iranian sites.
NetBlocks, a group that monitors nations’ interference with internet access, said Iran has been disconnected from the rest of the world for 36 hours. 
That’s left many scrambling on various social media apps to try and figure out what’s happening.
Those outside Iran seeking to make contact with loved ones inside via phone have found themselves unable to dial any numbers in the country.
Meanwhile, state-run TV and radio stations offer irregular updates on what’s happening with the conflict.
Instead, they often focus on the damage wrought by Iran’s own strikes on Israel.
The Iranian regime is also one of the world’s top jailers of journalists, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Even outside of open fighting, reporters faced strict restrictions stifling the flow of information.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy is heading to Geneva today.
Along with the foreign ministers of France and Germany and the EU foreign policy chief, he is going to meet his Iranian counterpart.
They will discuss the fighting as well as Tehran’s nuclear programme.
It marks an uptick in diplomatic efforts to try to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East. 
Ahead of the meeting with Abbas Araghchi, Lammy met US secretary of state Marco Rubio and Donald Trump’s Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff in Washington DC.
Speaking yesterday, Lammy said: “Now is the time to put a stop to the grave scenes in the Middle East and prevent a regional escalation that would benefit no one.”

Fighting today enters its second week, after Israel began attacking Iran last Friday.
As we’ve been reporting, Donald Trump has apparently approved a US plan to intervene, targeting Iran’s ability to potentially produce a nuclear weapon. However, he’s set a timeline of two weeks for the Iranian regime to agree a deal.

Israeli emergency services said six people suffered minor injuries in Beer Sheba, in southern Israel, after Iranian strikes.

Footage circulating online appears to show damaged buildings following the missile attack.

The Israel Defence Forces said it carried out strikes “in the heart of Tehran”.
Among its targets were missile sites, research headquarters and the “development of Iran’s nuclear weapons project”.
The attacks were a part of ongoing Israeli efforts to cripple Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
The Israeli Air Force also downed four drones.
