Round 2 of the 2025 U.S. Open at Pennsylvania\u2019s Oakmont Country Club in full swing today.<\/strong>
J.J. Spaun<\/strong> became only the second golfer this century with a bogey-free U.S. Open round here thanks to a 66 yesterday but currently trails Thriston Lawrence<\/strong> by one.
Tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler <\/strong>struggled again and shot 71. He\u2019s +4 for the tournament, two shots ahead of Bryson DeChambeau<\/strong>. Rory McIlroy<\/strong> is even further back at +8 and is in danger of missing the cut.
Viktor Hovland <\/strong>has just been interviewed by Sky Sports in the UK. He shot a 68 today and is -1 for the tournament, four shots behind our current leader Thriston Lawrence<\/strong>.
💬 \u201cIt felt really good. Yesterday was the best round I\u2019ve had in a long time. I wasn\u2019t quite as good today but I still hit a lot of really nice shots and I was able to score a little bit better.<\/em><\/strong>
\u201cI didn\u2019t three-putt four times today! That helps. It feels doable (to be in contention). If you play well it feels like you can go low. But you\u2019re never far away from a double bogey. You just get U.S. Open-ed sometimes.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>

It's 3:43 p.m. ET on Friday. Who had Thriston Lawrence <\/strong>as the solo leader at the U.S. Open on their bingo card?
Not many, I'm sure. Lawrence drains a six-footer for birdie on No. 12 (his third) hole. It's his second consecutive birdie of the day.
Lawrence entered the U.S. Open missing eight of the last 10 cuts in events he's played. Now, the South African is atop the U.S. Open leaderboard.
This rather frightening warning is being beamed right the way around Oakmont at the moment.
Hugh Kellenberger<\/em><\/strong>, who is leading our team at the course, says the weather isn\u2019t bad at all at the moment, although there are storms on the radar.
But as Hugh points out, there\u2019s precious little cover at Oakmont, outside of the various clubs and merchandise buildings. So everybody out on the course would need to get a wiggle on if bad weather was to strike.
J.J. Spaun <\/strong>began the day at 4 under. Through nine holes, he's even for the day, still at 4-under-par for the tournament.
Spaun has two birdies and two bogeys on his card. One of his most notable putts came at the par-3 8th, where he sank a 10 footer for par.
The American is scrambling but is still tied for the lead. He's only missed one fairway today so far. Will need to keep that pattern up if he wants to contend heading into the weekend.
Poor Thriston Lawrence<\/strong> just had to wait around 25 minutes in between his birdie putt on the 11th and his tee shot on the 12th. That is absolutely ridiculous.
Even worse: Lawrence hit that shot with another two groups on the tee box waiting their turn!
The pace of play is frightfully slow right now. So much so that Chase Johnson<\/strong> even enjoyed a lie down in the grass while he was waiting his turn to tee off earlier.
Oh my word, Thomas Detry! <\/strong>What a golf shot from the Belgian.
Following his 225-yard tee shot that found the fairway, Detry blasted his approach 141 yards. It landed on the green and eventually in the hole for an eagle.
That's the kind of shot that Team Europe captain Luke Donald would love to see from a potential member of the Ryder Cup squad this September. Detry moves to 1 under and is three off the lead.

J.J. Spaun <\/strong>is scrambling brilliantly to begin his second round. It was on display on the long par-3 eighth hole.
After missing the green with his 275-yard tee shot in the right rough, Spaun chipped to 10 feet from the pin. He sank the tricky par putt to remain at 4 under and tied for the lead.
The American isn't going away.

Here comes Ben Griffin. <\/strong>The American follows up his birdie at No. 2 with a 16-foot make on No. 6, improving to 3 under for the tournament.
Griffin is on a roll and is one off the lead held by J.J. Spaun <\/strong>and Thriston Lawrence. <\/strong>
\u2026 at 4 and 5. At the very least he needs to survive the next four holes at level par. Then he can look to claw back some shots on the back nine. He\u2019s still +8 so will need to shave at least one shot if he\u2019s going to have any chance of making the cut.

Jason Day<\/strong> shot a 3-under 67, tied for the second-best round completed so far today. He gained 2.19 strokes putting on Friday, after losing 1.6 strokes on Thursday. So did he find something on the practice green? A grip adjustment, perhaps? No \u2014 he took the matter into his own hands, quite literally.
💬 \u201cI bent my putter. Yeah, no, I just manually bent it myself. Stood on it. That's kind of how I used to do it back in the day. It just hadn't been looking very good to me personally, kind of looks a little bit hooded, the grip's on a little bit closed too, so that's not a positive for me. But I bent it enough to make it look more open, which is good,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Day said.
Scottie Scheffler <\/strong>finished his second round at the U.S. Open today at 4-over-par, eight shots back of the leader at that moment. He\u2019s not convinced he\u2019s out of it.
💬 \u201cThere were some times today where you feel like you could give up, just based on how difficult the golf course is, how my swing was feeling,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>Scheffler said.
\u201c\u2026 Going out early tomorrow, maybe get some easier conditions than the guys late in the afternoon. At the U.S. Open I don\u2019t think you\u2019re ever out of the tournament. Put together two decent days, I may be in 25th or 30th place or something like that after today, and like I said, by no means is that out of the tournament.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>

Xander Schauffele <\/strong>had a 17-foot, right-to-left par putt on the fifth hole. Unfortunately for the two-time major champion, the ball hung out to the right and didn't curl enough, resulting in a bogey.
Schauffele is still in the mix but needs to get to red figures. His bogey puts him at 1 over for the tournament.
Ben Griffin<\/strong> continues to impress. He has two wins this year, the first two of his career, and he is seemingly in the hunt every week. And there he is in fourth place, 1 under for the day and 2 under for the tournament.
Jon Rahm <\/strong>is mad at the golf course. Not really a \u2018news at 11\u2019 moment given Rahm\u2019s history with getting mad when he plays below his own high expectations, but this was still a fun exchange between him and a reporter.
Q. <\/strong>Can you put the score in perspective though given how tough this course is?
JON RAHM:<\/strong> \u201cHonestly, I'm too annoyed and too mad right now to think about any perspective. Very frustrated. Very few rounds of golf I played in my life where I think I hit good putts and they didn't sniff the hole, so it's frustrating.\u201d

Rory McIlroy<\/strong> stems the bleeding on the par-five fourth with a par. Justin Rose<\/strong> manages the same, to remain at +9. But Shane Lowry<\/strong> bogeys and moves to +14 for the tournament, for a share of 139th place.
J.J. Spaun <\/strong>seems to have found his groove after his bogey at No. 3.
He immediately responded with a birdie at the fourth hole. And just now at the par-3 sixth, the American drains a six footer for birdie to improve to 5-under-par for the tournament.
For someone who has never made a cut at the U.S. Open, Spaun is looking comfortable at punitive Oakmont.
It\u2019s a good tee shot for Rory McIlroy<\/strong> on the par-five fourth, leaving him 280 yards back from the green. At +8, he simply has to take it on with a driving iron, and he comes very close. But his ball drops into the greenside bunker to the left of the green. It looks to have landed right in the face of the bunker, which might actually help him on this occasion, giving him the upslope to work with, with the pin tucked into the far left-hand corner of the green.
McIlroy, Justin Rose<\/strong> and Shane Lowry<\/strong> are three of Europe\u2019s biggest and best golfers. They are currently a combined 30 over par. <\/p>\n
