Why Texas trusts in \u2018guarded\u2019 Teagan Kavan to bring the fire in deciding WCWS game
The five earned runs are the most NiJaree Canady has allowed in a game since she was pitching for Stanford last year.

But after that homer from Leighann Goode … now might be time to worry. I would have a hard time believing she isn't gassed at this point, especially because all three of these games are back-to-back. These Longhorns have their timing down pat. I think it might be time to lean on the bullpen a little bit if you're Gerry Glasco, at least to mix things up for a little bit.
Part of the reason why he might not be doing that yet though, is because Texas jumped all over the Red Raiders' other pitchers when it run-ruled Texas Tech earlier in the regular season, back in February. But in the last game of the season, it's all systems go.
Of all the things I expected in this game, a blowout was not it … and that might be what happens because Tech is not known for its hitting. A three-run homer puts the Longhorns up 5-0, and we're only in the first.
It can be all of that. But really, when you've seen a pitcher three games in a row, you know what pitches she has thrown to you particularly as a batter, and you know what each of her different spins and speeds looks from the box. This is why pitch mix is going to be so important for NiJa Canady because these hitters seem to be all over her go-to rise ball at the moment. I wouldn't be concerned just yet, but the Red Raiders' defense needs to be on point today to back Canady up.
I think we can see this on the other side of the coin too, as these Red Raiders hitters are familiar with Kavan by now as well. It's all about who makes the adjustment first.
OK Molly, this is where we need your expertise — Is NiJa Canady tired? Are they just figuring out how to hit her? Is this cause Mike White is an elite hitting coach (isn't he?)
B1 – Texas 5, Texas Tech 0<\/strong>
My goodness, the Longhorns are cruising as Leighann Goode smacks a three-run home run to center field. What a start against Nija Canady.

That's what Longhorns fans are more used to seeing from Reese Atwood, as she lines a shot through the 5-6 hole to get Texas on the board first, and Katie Stewart has the chance to do more damage after a miscue by Hailey Toney at third moves Atwood and Mia Scott into scoring position.
And she takes advantage, sending a liner the other way to right field. The Longhorns are capitalizing early in this game and on 0-2 counts. They are calm, cool and collected right now and know exactly what they're getting from Nija Canady.
In the understatement of the postseason, that was a mess of a defensive play for the Red Raiders. Yikes.
B1 – Texas 1, Texas Tech 0<\/strong>
Reese Atwood comes through with a single to left field to get the Longhorns on top to score Kayden Henry. Just the start that Texas needed against Nija Henry.
Kayden Henry just beat out that grounder to short with BLAZING speed. She was thrown out on a steal attempt yesterday by Texas Tech catcher Victoria Valdez, and with one out, we'll see if she tests her arm again to get a runner in scoring position.
Nija Canady starts the bottom half of the inning with a strikeout, as she turns to the screwball to get Ashton Maloney swinging. I mentioned this last night, but I'd keep an eye on Canady's pitch mix tonight. She usually relies heavily on her rise ball, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see her go more side to side with a curve and screw, and then get Longhorns batters off their timing with a changeup thrown in.

B – Texas Tech 0, Texas 0 <\/strong>
The shift gets Alana Johnson again. That has to be frustrating, knowing it's almost tantalizing how open the right side of the infield looks for her. There's still time to make an adjustment, obviously, but if that comes up in a big situation tonight and works in the Longhorns' favor, kudos to whoever did their scouting report.
Watching that Allred at-bat makes me think of Arkansas hitter Bri Ellis, who told me before the playoffs started that the zone is so tight in softball that pitchers have to be essentially perfect. If you're patient as a batter, you can probably get on base with a walk. That is definitely NOT the case in baseball.
And Lauren Allred wins that battle! It took 13 pitches, but she ended up getting hit by a pitch from Kavan that stayed up and hit her on the elbow. And here's that shift again on Alana Johnson, with three players on the left side of the infield. They'll keep doing it until she proves that she can take it the other way.
There already have been three mound visits for Teagan Kavan in this inning, two from catcher Reese Atwood and now once from the Texas pitching coach. There's two outs, but there's still pressure on this Longhorns defense.
This has been a great at-bat by Lauren Allred, who started in an 0-2 count and has now worked to see her 12th pitch in a 2-2 count. This is what the Texas Tech offense does: It wears you down and pushes pitchers to find the zone. She is making Teagan Kavan WORK to get the third out of this inning or make her make a mistake.
Allred was hit with the 13th pitch.
The biggest X-factors at the plate for Texas Tech all postseason have been Mihyia Davis, Lauren Allred and Alana Johnson. Davis leads off this lineup, which in the first two games of this series left runners in scoring position in early innings. If she gets things going in the first, Texas Tech fans in the stands will go wild.

Something to watch tonight: Texas ace Teagan Kavan has yet to allow an earned run while in Oklahoma City. Will the Red Raiders change that tonight?
Another stat to note: Longhorns third baseman Mia Scott, who hit a homer off of NiJaree Canady last night, has recorded eight hits off of Canady in her career, the most of any player in Division I. And that home run last night was an absolute LASER.
I\u2019ve seen a lot of handmade signs from Tech fans, and Texas seems to have gone the printed route. Tons and tons of Longhorns fans have these \u201cTexas Fight\u201d signs, and the parent section (I assume) has one giant oval printout of each player\u2019s headshot as well.
I cannot believe NiJaree Canady has thrown all 495 pitches for Texas Tech at this tournament, but at the same time, I'm not surprised at all. This is what she came to the Red Raiders for: to lead her team to this moment.<\/p>\n
