Former US vice-president tells conference \u2018I do worry, frankly, about what\u2019s happening right now in the world\u2019
Kamala Harris has criticised Elon Musk, noted \u201cit\u2019s important that we remember the 1930s\u201d and raised concerns about AI when speaking to an audience of 4,500 real estate agents at an industry conference on the Gold Coast.
The former US vice-president, who is visiting Australia for the first time, was the guest of honour at the 2025 Australian Real Estate Conference on Sunday.
She was interviewed for an hour on stage by the real estate industry veteran John McGrath<\/a>.
Without naming Musk, she cited the Trump administration adviser as an example of a person holding \u201cthis misplaced idea that the sign of the strength of a leader is who you beat down\u201d.
\u201cThere was someone that is very popular these days, at least in the press, who suggested that it is a sign of the weakness of western civilisations to have empathy,\u201d she said.
\u201cImagine. No, it\u2019s a sign of strength to have some level of curiosity and concern and care about the wellbeing of others.\u201d
Musk, the chief executive of Tesla, criticised Harris\u2019s Democratic administration and its attitude to immigrants in an interview with the podcaster Joe Rogan<\/a> released in March.
\u201cThe fundamental weakness of western civilisation is empathy, the empathy exploit,\u201d Musk said. \u201cThey\u2019re exploiting a bug in western civilisation, which is the empathy response.\u201d
Introduced by McGrath as \u201cone of the most successful women in history\u201d with \u201cher best work ahead of her\u201d, Harris joked: \u201cI am unemployed right now.\u201d She walked on and off the stage to a standing ovation and the strains of Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s Halo.
Harris spoke about her upbringing and career. She shared anecdotes from her time as California attorney general negotiating with the JP Morgan Chase chief executive, Jamie Dimon.
She did not mention by name Donald Trump, or JD Vance, or her narrow defeat at November\u2019s US presidential election.
Harris concluded with thinly veiled remarks about the new US administration\u2019s foreign and trade policies.
\u201cI do worry, frankly, about what\u2019s happening right now in the world,\u201d she said.
\u201cI do worry that it is important that we remember history. It\u2019s important that we remember the 1930s. It\u2019s important that we remember that history has taught us that isolation does not equal insulation
\u201cIt is important that we understand and remember history, which taught us the interdependence and interconnection between nations.
\u201cHistory that has taught us the importance of relationships of trust, of the importance of friendships, integrity, honesty.\u201d
She tried to turn personal anecdotes \u2013 many taken from her 2019 book \u2013 into life lessons for those attending the conference.
Harris said she had often become the first woman in a job \u2013 despite discouragement.
\u201cI don\u2019t hear no. I eat no for breakfast. I don\u2019t hear no until maybe the tenth time. I can\u2019t begin to tell you the number of times it has been explicitly or implicitly said to me \u2013 it\u2019s not your time. You\u2019re not ready, they\u2019re not ready.
\u201cDon\u2019t you listen. And this is again what I mean about applauding ambition.\u201d
She said Americans distrusted AI because it threatened jobs and risked spreading misinformation.
\u201cIt is important to celebrate innovation but, again this may be just the prosecutor in me, one must ask also: are there vulnerable people and are we doing what we can to ensure they\u2019re safe?\u201d
Other speakers at the conference included the British entrepreneur and podcaster Steven Bartlett and the Sydney real estate agent David Walker.
AREC is being held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. It runs until Monday. Organisers would not disclose how much speakers were paid.<\/p>\n
