Trump administration halts Harvard\u2019s ability to enroll international students<\/a>
The Trump administration<\/a> escalated its feud with Harvard on Thursday, halting the university\u2019s ability to enrol international students and ordering existing international students at the university to transfer or lose their legal status.
Homeland security secretary, Kristi Noem, accused Harvard of \u201cfostering violence, antisemitism and coordinating with the Chinese Communist party on its campus\u201d.
Pippa Norris, a lecturer at Harvard\u2019s Kennedy School of Government, told the Guardian the move would \u201cbenefit Oxford and Cambridge and many other academic institutions \u2026 America, again, is going to have problems as a result.\u201d
Previously, the Trump administration terminated<\/a> a further $450m in grants to the university in May, after an earlier cancellation<\/a> of $2.2bn in federal funding. In response to the federal cuts, the university \u2013 with an endowment of more than $53bn \u2013 filed a lawsuit<\/a> against the Trump administration.
US media reported that the White House notified Harvard about its decision after ongoing correspondence regarding the \u201clegality of a sprawling records request\u201d.
Kristi Noem justified the decision by saying: \u201cThis action \u2026 is the unfortunate result of Harvard\u2019s failure to comply with simple reporting requirements.\u201d A Harvard spokesperson called the government\u2019s action \u201cunlawful\u201d in a statement to the Guardian on Thursday.
