That will not stand in this state. He has been taken into custody. No one is above the law.\u201d<br \/>Baraka has opposed the construction and opening of the 1,000-bed detention center, arguing that it should not be allowed to open because of building permit issues.<br \/>Linda Baraka, the mayor\u2019s wife, accused the federal government of targeting her husband.<br \/>\u201cThey didn\u2019t arrest anyone else. They didn\u2019t ask anyone else to leave. They wanted to make an example out of the mayor,\u201d she said, adding that she had not been allowed to see him.<br \/>A crowd gathered to protest outside the building where Baraka was being held, with many chanting: \u201cLet the mayor go!\u201d<br \/>When federal officials blocked his entry, a heated argument broke out, according to Viri Martinez, an activist with the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice. It continued even after Baraka returned to the public side of the gates.<br \/>\u201cThere was yelling and pushing,\u201d Martinez said. \u201cThen the officers swarmed Baraka. They threw one of the organizers to the ground. They put Baraka in handcuffs and put him in an unmarked car.\u201d<br \/>The New Jersey Globe published a photograph of him being <a href=\"https:\/\/newjerseyglobe.com\/immigration\/baraka-led-away-in-handcuffs-after-scuffle-outside-delaney-hall-detention-facility\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">led away in handcuffs<\/a> by officers in jackets marked \u201cPolice Ice\u201d. The newspaper did not have a reporter at the scene, but said observers at Delaney Hall said there had been \u201ca scuffle\u201d.<br \/>Baraka, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jan\/23\/newark-mayor-immigration-raid\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">spoke out against Trump\u2019s immigration policies<\/a> in January after an immigration raid in Newark he said Ice agents conducted without a warrant, was at Delaney Hall with Democratic New Jersey Congress members Bonnie Watson Coleman, LaMonica McIver and Rob Menendez.<br \/>The politicians have accused the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of reopening the detention facility, in contravention of local ordinances and without the necessary permits.<br \/>It is the largest such facility in the north-eastern US, and was the first to open after Trump\u2019s second term of office began in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/news\/releases\/ice-expands-detention-capacity-delaney-hall-facility-new-jersey\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to the Ice website<\/a>.<br \/>Coleman, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepBonnie\/status\/1920909461318774937\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">in a tweet<\/a>, said the visit was an attempt to establish conditions inside. \u201cWe\u2019ve heard stories of what it\u2019s like in other Ice prisons. We\u2019re exercising our oversight authority to see for ourselves,\u201d she wrote.<br \/>Coleman also told reporters at a press conference outside the facility that the lawmakers had traveled to the facility to see the conditions, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/ice-protest-arrests-new-jersey-mayor-b2748273.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the Independent<\/a>.<br \/>\u201cIce is out of control,\u201d she said. \u201cIce thinks it can intimidate all of us. And it cannot intimidate any of us. And we the people will make sure that this administration adheres to the rules that separate us from dictatorships and other third world countries.\u201d<br \/>Menendez accused Ice agents of having \u201cput their hands on\u201d representatives Coleman and McIver, reported the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/09\/nyregion\/newark-ice-protest-arrest-ras-baraka.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">New York Times<\/a>. \u201cThey feel no restraint on what they should be doing, and that was shown in broad daylight today,\u201d Menendez said at the news conference.<br \/>In video of the altercation shared with the Associated Press, a federal official in a jacket with the logo of the Homeland Security Investigations can be heard telling Baraka he could not join a tour of the facility because \u201cyou are not a Congress member.\u201d<br \/>Baraka then left the secure area, rejoining protesters on the public side of the gate. Video showed him speaking through the gate to a man in a suit, who said: \u201cThey\u2019re talking about coming back to arrest you.\u201d<br \/>\u201cI\u2019m not on their property. They can\u2019t come out on the street and arrest me,\u201d Baraka said.<br \/>Minutes later several Ice agents, some wearing face coverings, surrounded him and others on the public side. As protesters cried out \u201cShame!\u201d Baraka was dragged back through the security gate in handcuffs.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/05\/09\/newark-ice-facility-ras-baraka-arrested-democrats\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Axios<\/a> reported that Coleman\u2019s office said that they \u201carrived at Delaney Hall today at about 1pm to exercise their oversight authority as prescribed by law. After a period of explaining the law to the officials at the site they were escorted in.\u201d<br \/>Video attached to the tweet shows the Congress members inside the grounds of the center talking to employees.
