Donald Trump has announced he will target foreign movies with a 100% tariff, dealing a blow to the UK film industry. The US president has also called for the reopening of the notorious Alcatraz prison, which shut in 1963.

Just as he steps away from the microphone at the end of his news conference, Donald Trump is asked about Israel’s plan to capture all of the Gaza Strip.
Benjamin Netanyahu has described that plan as intensive, with troops to remain there for an unspecified length of time.

Trump comes back to the podium and says “we’re going to help the people of Gaza get some food, people are starving”.
“We’re going to help the people of Gaza because they’re being treated very badly by Hamas,” he adds.
Donald Trump has been asked about a picture of him dressed up as the Pope which was shared on Truth Social and by the official White House account on X.
“The Catholics loved it,” he claims.
“I had nothing to do with it, somebody made a picture of me dressed like the Pope and they put it out on the internet.
“That’s not me that did it, I’ve got no idea where it came from, maybe it was AI.
“I know nothing about it… actually my wife thought it was cute.”
Away from his plans for film tariffs, Donald Trump has been asked about another announcement he made over the weekend.
Earlier, we told you about his call for the reopening of Alcatraz prison that has been closed since 1963 (see 15.10 post).
Trump says the prison represents “something very strong, very powerful in terms of law and order”.
“Our country needs law and order… it’s right now a museum believe it or not.
“We’re going to look at it… I think it’s going to be very interesting, we’ll see if we can bring it back in large form.”
He describes Alcatraz as “sitting there rusting and rotting” but says it represents something both “horrible and beautiful”.
Donald Trump has been happy to take wide-ranging questions in the Oval Office.
He’s just been asked about his plans for a 100% tariff on non-US films, and he starts by describing the industry as being “decimated by other countries”.
Trump tells reporters that he’s going to meet with some film industry officials because he’s “not looking to hurt the industry”, he’s “looking to help the industry”.
He repeats his claim that the film industry in the US has been “decimated” and says “if you look at how little is done in this country right now, we used to do 100% and now we do almost very little”.
“We’re going to meet with the industry, I want to make sure they’re happy with it, because we’re all about jobs,” he adds.
As expected, Donald Trump has just announced Washington DC will be hosting the 2027 NFL draft.
The draft was held in New York City from 1965 to 2014, and it has since rotated between different host cities.
The three-day event attracted more than 600,000 people in Wisconsin last month for the most recent draft.

While we wait to hear from Donald Trump, the leader of the far-right group Proud Boys has said he met the US president on Saturday.
Enrique Tarrio had been facing a sentence of 22 years in federal prison after being convicted of seditious conspiracy for actions relating to the 6 January 2021 attack on the Capitol.
But in one of his first acts of his second term, Trump granted him clemency along with rioters and others convicted of involvement in the attack.
“I had the honour of meeting the President of the United States, a moment I never could have imagined in my darkest days,” Tarrio said in a post on X.
He also praised Trump as “the greatest president since George Washington”.
“My deepest gratitude goes to my family, my brotherhood, my friends, and every person who fought for justice and helped elect the greatest president since George Washington,” he wrote.
“Together, we did it.”
We’ve now heard from the White House on Donald Trump’s plans for a 100% tariff on non-US films.
Spokesperson Kush Desai has said no final decisions have been made on foreign film tariffs.
However, he added that Trump’s administration is exploring all options to deliver on the directive to “safeguard our country’s national and economic security while making Hollywood great again”.

As we’ve been reporting, Donald Trump has targeted the film industry in his most recent tariff announcement.
The US president announced plans to hit films made outside the country with a 100% tariff (see 15.03 post) as he labelled them a “national security threat”.
But how has that announcement affected markets?
It was unclear whether the duties will apply to films on streaming platforms as well as those released in cinemas.
That meant Netflix shares were down 2.5% in early trading and Disney, Warner Bros Discovery and Universal-owner Comcast fell between 0.7% and 1.7%.
The share prices of theatre operators Cinemark and IMAX were down 5.4% and 5.9%, respectively.
