Donald Trump made mass deportations a key part of his campaign ever since the US election last year.
His administration has now said it will pay $1,000 to immigrants in the US illegally who have returned to their home country voluntarily.
The Department of Homeland Security said it’s also paying for travel assistance.
“If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest, US homeland security secretary Kristi Noem said.
“DHS is now offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home country through the CBP Home App.”
The administration is pushing for those in the country illegally to “self-deport” as it continues to ask Congress for a major increase in resources for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement department responsible from removing people from the country.

The US president is set to announce an agreement for Washington to host the 2027 NFL draft, our US partner network NBC News is reporting.
That will take place at 6pm UK time, and you can watch it in a stream at the top of this live page once he starts speaking.
A White House official has also told NBC News that Trump is scheduled to meet Russian-American ballerina Ksenia Karelina.
Karelina was released from a Russian prison last month after spending more than a year in custody after allegations of giving financial support to Ukraine’s military.
She was arrested in Russia in February last year and sentenced to 12 years in a penal colony after she donated $52 to a charity that sends aid to Ukraine.
Some reaction to bring you now to Donald Trump’s plan to put a 100% tariff on films made outside the US, which we told you about a little earlier (see 15.03 post).
A broadcasting union has said the move could be a “knock-out blow” to the sector in the UK.
Philippa Childs, head of the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union (BECTU), said such a move could seriously damage the UK film sector – which is “only just recovering” from the impact of the pandemic, when many productions were delayed or cancelled.
“The UK is a world leader in film and TV production, employing thousands of talented workers, and this is a key growth sector in the government’s industrial strategy,” she said.
“These tariffs, coming after COVID and the recent slowdown, could deal a knock-out blow to an industry that is only just recovering and will be really worrying news for tens of thousands of skilled freelancers who make films in the UK.”
Ms Childs called on the government to “move swiftly to defend this vital sector, and support the freelancers who power it, as a matter of essential national economic interest”.
Donald Trump has said he’s offered to send US troops to Mexico to help the country combat drug trafficking.
The US president, speaking to reporters on Air Force One, said he made the offer because the drug cartels were “horrible people” who caused thousands of deaths.
But Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said she refused Trump’s offer because “sovereignty is not for sale”.
Reacting to that move, Trump said “I think she’s a lovely woman… but she is so afraid of the cartels that she can’t even think straight”.
Trump has had several calls with Sheinbaum since he returned to the Oval Office at the start of the year, with the two leaders discussing a range of subjects including security, trade and immigration.
He’s also said publicly that the US would take military action if Mexico failed to dismantle drug cartels.
Those tariffs aren’t the only recent announcement Donald Trump has made.
In his usual unpredictable style, the US president has also called for the reopening of notorious prison Alcatraz.
He said America had been “plagued by vicious, violent and repeat criminal offenders” in a post on social media site Truth Social.
He added that when the US was “a more serious nation” it “did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals”.
“That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz, to house America’s most ruthless and violent offenders,” he wrote.
Trump said the reopening of the San Francisco prison would “serve as a symbol of law, order, and justice”.
After hailing it as the “most beautiful” word in the dictionary, Donald Trump is once again threatening more tariffs – this time in the film industry.
The US president has said the country’s movie industry is “dying a very fast death” as he announced he will target films made outside the US as part of his ongoing tariff war.
He complained that other countries were “offering all sorts of incentives to draw” filmmakers and film studios away from the US.
In a post on his social media site Truth Social, he said this was a “concerted effort by other nations and, therefore, a national security threat”.

Carney was also asked whether he had seen signs of respect from the Trump administration towards Canada.
“It’s always important to distinguish want from reality,” he said, adding that Canada becoming a US state will “never ever happen”.
