With so many twists and turns at the negotiating table, it’s easy to forget what happened more than 24 hours ago.
On Friday, Vladimir Putin held another summit with Donald Trump’s top peace envoy, Steve Witkoff.

Vladimir Putin has ordered that several emergency aircraft be sent to Iran to help extinguish a fire in the port of Bandar Abbas.
Eighteen people have died and more than 700 been injured after a chemical explosion at Iran’s largest port, according to state media.
The blast saw a huge cloud of black and orange smoke billow above Rajaei port, and the fire is still raging. 
The emergency ministry said a Beriev Be-200 amphibious aircraft specialising in firefighting, as well as an Ilyushin Il-76 military transport plane, would be sent to Iran to help out. 
Putin’s promise to send planes is the latest development in an ever-closening relationship between Tehran and Moscow.

Moscow wants to “systematically integrate” the use of motorcycles into offensive operations in Ukraine by the summer, according to a leading thinktank. 
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said it had seen video showing Russians “practicing offensive and defensive tactics on motorcycles in groups of two to three people” at a training facility. 
It also cited Ukrainian battlefield commanders as staying they had observed Russia developing combat tactics with bikes 
Ukrainian Kharkiv Group of Forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Pavlo Shamshyn noted that motorcycles allow Russian soldiers to enhance their speed and manoeuvrability, which ISW said was “crucial for evading Ukrainian drone strikes”.
At the same time however, it said the “loud noise of the motorcycle prevents the rider from hearing approaching Ukrainian drones”. 
The thinktank said it found an “increased trend” of Moscow’s forces “conducting mechanised and combined motorised assaults and transporting infantry with motorcycles and civilian vehicles throughout the frontline”.
It said this was because Russian command was trying desperately “to offset Ukrainian drone strikes” and mitigate the equipment constraints “resulting from high armoured vehicle losses”.

Its analysts have been taking a closer look at how and why Russia recruits foreign nationals for its army. 
It has found that, while Russia isn’t recruiting foreigners in the numbers that some have suggested, that Moscow still uses them to make up a portion of its frontline forces.

Kemi Badenoch said Trump’s suggestion that the Russian president does not want to stop the war is “definitely a sign of progress”.
“It’s a positive signal,” Badenoch said. 
“I have always said that President Zelenskyy was the hero in this war, Putin is the aggressor, and for those of us who believe in freedom, we should not allow the aggressor to win, certainly not someone like Putin, who doesn’t want to see freedom in Russia or Ukraine.”
She added  it was “really heartening” to see Trump talking to Zelenskyy in the Vatican “after that really awful press conference” in the White House in February.

Badenoch added: “I think we should all be pleased to see these positive signals”.
But when asked if Ukraine should accept a land-for-peace deal, she said that “would be rewarding aggression”. 
Trump has said any suggestion of Crimea being returned to Ukraine is “ridiculous”, and is reportedly pressuring Kyiv to give it up formally – something Zelenskyy has described as a “red line”. 
Over in Poland, the country’s defence ministry is offering military training to civilians.
Warsaw is massively ramping up training schemes for the public in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – with Prime Minister Donald Tusk saying last month that work is under way to make all men in Poland undergo military courses.

In case you missed it, Donald Trump and Volodymr Zelenskyy met in the very heart of the Vatican yesterday. 
The Ukrainian president said the one-on-one talks could prove to be “historic” after pictures showed him sitting opposite Trump, around two feet apart, in the large marble hall inside St Peter’s Basilica.

These images come to us from Chernobyl, where officials yesterday commemorated the 39th anniversary of the infamous nuclear accident.
On 26 April 1986, the worst nuclear disaster of all time occurred after an explosion at the plant, which occurred due to a combination of operator error and design flaws. 
The plant, in northern Ukraine, briefly came under Russian control in the early days of the current war, before Kyiv retook it in March 2022. 
Ukraine’s first lady,  Olena Zelenska, shared this message yesterday… 
As we reported earlier, Russia claims it has retaken the Kursk region from Ukraine (see 7.25 post) – something Kyiv strongly denies (see 8.39 post).
Now, a senior Russian general says the “scattered remnants” of Ukraine’s army still in the region will be hunted down and “destroyed”. 
State news outlet RIA says the acting commander of the 810th Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet told Vladimir Putin this morning that any who remain will be swiftly dealt with. 
“At the moment we have recaptured the settlement of Gornal and are entrenched in its streets, which is completely under our control,” the commander was cited as saying, adding that Russian troops continue to clear forest areas west and south of Gornal.
Ukraine claimed earlier that its troops still held positions inside Kursk and were fending off Russian attacks.

The UK welcomes Donald Trump’s criticism of Vladimir Putin, a cabinet minister has told Sky News. 
Trump hit out at Putin following a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the heart of the Vatican. 
Asked about the US president’s words on Putin perhaps not being interested in peace, senior minister Pat McFadden told Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips<\/a><\/b>: “Certainly the tone that was adopted yesterday in terms of recognising the consequences of Russian aggression was right, was welcome.
“This is a war of Russian aggression, so I hope that President Trump and his administration can bring the parties together in a way that stops the fighting and gets a lasting peace,” he added.
Asked if he thought there had been a change of mind in the White House about Mr Putin, Mr McFadden said: “Well, you know those words speak for themselves. There’s certainly no reason for President Putin to be ordering strikes on civilian areas in Ukraine.”<\/p>\n
