Russia overnight Thursday launched one of the most devastating bombardments on Ukraine’s major cities since the war began<\/a>, killing at least twelve people, hours after President Donald Trump said he believed<\/a> he had struck deals with both sides to end the war<\/a>.
\u201cVladimir, STOP!\u201d Trump wrote on his Truth Social website after the attacks, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
\u201cI am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing,\u201d Trump said. \u201c5000 soldiers a week are dying. Lets get the Peace Deal DONE!\u201d
Trump told reporters Thursday he believed Putin would listen to his plea to halt strikes on Ukraine. He said while there was \u201ca lot of hatred,\u201d \u201cbad blood,\u201d and \u201cdisgust\u201d between Ukraine and Russia, they both wanted peace, \u201cbut they have to get to the table.\u201d The president said he believes both sides will ultimately reach a peace agreement and added that he wants it to happen quickly.
During a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office later Thursday with Norway’s prime minister, Trump said he “didn\u2019t like last night. I wasn\u2019t happy with it, and we\u2019re in the midst of talking peace, and missiles were fired, and I was not happy with it.”
Asked if he would consider additional sanctions on Russia if it keeps bombing Ukraine, Trump said, “I’d rather answer that question in a week. I want to see if we can have a deal … No reason to answer it now but I won\u2019t be happy. Let me put it that way, things will happen.\u201d
Trump said the U.S. is putting pressure on both sides, especially Russia, saying, \u201cYou have to have two to tango.\u201d
Asked if Ukraine would have to give away some territory to secure a peace deal, he said, “It depends what territory they’ve been fighting. They\u2019ve lost a lot of territory, and we\u2019ll do the best we can, working with Ukraine, we\u2019ll do the best we can, but they lost a lot of territory.”
The president said it would be “very difficult” for Ukraine to get back Crimea, the peninsula that Russia took control of during the Obama administration, though he falsely claimed that President Barack Obama gave Crimea to Russia.
Trump said that Russia has offered concessions in the talks, including “stopping the war, stopping taking the whole country,” which the president described as a “pretty big concession.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in the Oval Office with Trump, said that the U.S. has shown a “pathway forward” and negotiations will continue over the weekend. “We’ve shown them the finish line. We need both of them to say yes, but what happened last night with those missile strikes should remind everybody of why this war needs to end.”
The missile strikes caused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cut short a trip to South Africa. He said he would be returning home immediately to deal with the \u201cdestruction\u201d in his country.
\u201cRussia continues to kill people and avoid tough pressure and accountability for this,\u201d he said Thursday. \u201cUnfortunately, there is a lot of destruction. Rescue operations are ongoing, the rubble of buildings is being cleared.\u201d
The capital, Kyiv, was pummeled<\/a> with 70 missiles, 48 of which were shot down, and 140 drones, 64 shot down, Ukraine\u2019s Air Force said. It was \u201ca particularly horrible and loud night,\u201d Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a statement.
The death toll has risen to 12, according to Ukrainian officials, after they recovered 2 bodies from under the rubble. Another 90 people were injured.
Yevheniia Sobolieva, 23, an interpreter and event manager in Kyiv, told NBC News that the overnight explosions shook her walls and slammed the doors shut in her apartment, sending her and other panicked residents into the corridor as more missiles fell.
Outside, the air was filled with smoke and ash, and the street was scattered with broken glass. Sobolieva ran to take shelter at a nearby metro station, which she said was so full of people, it was like \u201cthe first days of the full-scale invasion.\u201d
Bombs also fell in the county\u2019s second city of Kharkiv, where Mayor Ihor Terekhov urged residents to \u201cbe careful!\u201d
The attacks follow the latest conflicting and often contradictory statements in the U.S.-brokered peace talks.
On Wednesday, Trump said in the Oval Office that \u201cI think we have a deal with both\u201d sides \u2014 before suggesting that an agreement with Ukraine was still pending.
\u201cI thought it might be easier to deal with Zelenskyy,\u201d he said. \u201cSo far, it\u2019s been harder.\u201d
Earlier in the day, Trump launched his latest criticism of Zelenskyy on Truth Social, accusing his Ukrainian counterpart of making \u201cinflammatory statements\u201d \u2014 a reference to a Wall Street Journal interview<\/a> in which Zelenskyy pushed back on Washington’s peace plan \u2014 and said of a deal that Zelenskyy needs to \u201cGET IT DONE.\u201d
The White House is trying to push Ukraine into accepting a deal with Russia despite setting terms that Kyiv deems deeply unfavorable. High-level talks<\/a>\u00a0in the United Kingdom disintegrated earlier this week after\u00a0Rubio<\/a>\u00a0and special envoy Steve Witkoff pulled out, leaving lower-level ministers to meet instead.
Trump\u2019s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, retired Lt Gen. Keith Kellogg, who was part of the talks, told NBC News that \u201ctalks in London yesterday were candid, constructive and productive.\u201d
While visiting South Africa, Zelenskyy told a news conference that a document drafted at the talks \u201cis on President Trump\u2019s table.\u201d He again lamented that \u201cwe do not see strong pressure on Russia and new sanctions for its aggression\u201d on Thursday.
Witkoff is set to travel to Moscow this week to speak with President Vladimir Putin about the talks, the White House said Tuesday.
Gauging Russian support for the war is difficult given the brutality with which Putin\u2019s regime silences dissent and political opposition. Even so, a running survey by Moscow\u2019s Levada Center pollster shows the overwhelming majority \u2014 80% as of February<\/a> \u2014 support the invasion in some capacity.
Canvassing opinion on the streets of Moscow showed some differences of opinion.
\u201cNo deals. Let them get what they deserve,\u201d said Evgeniy, 66, a retiree. Tatyana, 50, said she was in \u201cfavor of ceasefire because so many people are suffering.\u201d Both declined to give their last names amid Russia’s repressive atmosphere.
For Ukrainians and their supporters abroad, Thursday’s attacks symbolized the hypocrisy of Russia\u2019s position. Putin continues to make extreme demands \u2014 his conditions for a deal essentially resemble a Ukrainian surrender \u2014 while continuing to prosecute the invasion he launched three years ago.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday that Kyiv\u2019s \u201cinability to negotiate is becoming increasingly obvious.\u201d
Zelenskyy and members of his government say they will never accept Russian control over Crimea, a key demand of the Kremlin’s.
\u201cYesterday\u2019s Russian maximalist demands for Ukraine to withdraw from its regions, combined with these brutal strikes, show that Russia, not Ukraine, is the obstacle to peace,\u201d Sybiha, the Ukrainian foreign minister, said. \u201cMoscow, not Kyiv, is where pressure should be applied.\u201d
