The S&amp;P 500 sank 0.2% Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 349 points, or 0.9%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.1%. The Dow was earlier down as many as 1,700 points following even worse losses worldwide on worries that Trump\u2019s tariffs could torpedo the global economy. It then surged to a gain after a rumor circulated that Trump may pause his tariffs. But the White House quickly called that fake news, and Trump then threatened to raise tariffs further on China.<br \/>THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP\u2019s earlier story follows below.<br \/>NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 U.S. stocks are careening through a manic Monday after <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-stock-market-52a00ea2bb92a067ee72343941b02cd4\">President Donald Trump<\/a><\/span> threatened to crank <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-liberation-day-2a031b3c16120a5672a6ddd01da09933\">his tariffs<\/a><\/span> higher, despite a stunning display from Wall Street showing how dearly it wants him to do the opposite. <br \/>The S&amp;P 500 was down 0.8% in late trading, but only after a shocking day of heart-racing reversals as battered financial markets try to figure out what Trump\u2019s ultimate goal is for his <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-china-trade-4e130e740f3955feccec226d6c0084d9\">trade war<\/a><\/span>. If it\u2019s to get other countries to agree to trade deals, he could lower his tariffs and avoid a possible recession. But if it\u2019s to remake the economy and stick with tariffs for the long haul, stock prices may need to fall further.<br \/>The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 563 points, or 1.5%, with a little less than an hour remaining in trading, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.6% lower. <\/p>\n<p>All three indexes started the day sharply lower, and the Dow plunged as many as 1,700 points following even worse losses worldwide on worries that Trump\u2019s tariffs could torpedo the global economy. But it suddenly surged to a gain of nearly 900 points. The S&amp;P 500, meanwhile, went from a loss of 4.7% to a leap of 3.4%, which would have been its biggest jump in years. <br \/>The sudden rise followed a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-kevin-hassett-false-bogus-report-ad825e7d8c06514843821dfd898bd3f9\">false rumor<\/a><\/span> that Trump was considering a 90-day pause on his tariffs, one that a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RapidResponse47\/status\/1909254710361575428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House account on X<\/a><\/span> quickly labeled as \u201cfake news.\u201d Stocks then turned back down. That a rumor could move trillions of dollars\u2019 worth of investments shows how much investors are hoping to see signs that Trump may let up on tariffs.<br \/>But soon after that, Trump threatened to <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-stock-market-52a00ea2bb92a067ee72343941b02cd4\">raise tariffs further against China<\/a><\/span> after the world\u2019s second-largest economy <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-tariff-trade-trump-earths-02cd23e913649f32985f075058e787c4\">retaliated last week<\/a><\/span> with its own set of tariffs on U.S. products. <br \/>It\u2019s a slap in the face to Wall Street, not just because of the sharp losses it\u2019s taking, but because it suggests Trump may not be moved by its pain. Many professional investors had long thought that a president who used to crow about records reached under his watch would pull back on policies if they sent the Dow reeling.<br \/>On Sunday Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he does not want markets to fall. But he also said he <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-recession-financial-markets-negotiations-retaliation-860760cdc1aa2cc58853c9aab987e36d\">wasn\u2019t concerned about a sell-off<\/a><\/span>, saying \u201csometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.\u201d<br \/>Trump has given several reasons for his stiff tariffs, including to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States, which is a process that could take years. Trump on Sunday said he wanted to bring down the numbers for how much more the United States imports from other countries versus how much it sends to them. <br \/>Still, indexes kept swerving between losses and gains Monday, even after Trump threatened to raise his tariffs, because hope still remains in markets that negotiations may still come.<br \/>\u201cCould things get worse? Of course they could,\u201d said Nate Thooft, a senior portfolio manager at Manulife Investment Management. \u201cWe\u2019re not calling the all-clear at all, but when you have this type of volatility in the market, of course you\u2019re going to have back and forth\u201d in markets not just day to day but also hour to hour. <br \/>\u201cWe\u2019re all waiting for the next bit of information,\u201d he said. \u201cLiterally a Truth Social tweet or an announcement of some sort about real negotiations could dramatically move this market. This is the world we live in right now.\u201d<br \/>All that seems to be certain is that the financial pain hammered investments <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-mideast-stock-markets-546a2d4a86138458987131c5c347151f\">around the world<\/a><\/span> on Monday, the third straight day of steep losses after Trump announced tariffs in his \u201cLiberation Day.\u201d <br \/>Stocks in <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-us-tariffs-trade-trump-5dd928eabb83b9cc560e1d6971f52e7f\">Hong Kong <\/a><\/span> plunged 13.2% for their worst day since 1997. A barrel of benchmark U.S. crude oil dipped below $60 during the morning for the first time since 2021, hurt by worries that a global economy weakened by trade barriers will burn less fuel. <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bitcoin-reserve-trump-crypto-sacks-5c91a1ab3dab9a8c86d4bc42b8db3f8f\">Bitcoin<\/a><\/span> sank below $79,000, down from its record above $100,000 set in January, after holding steadier than other markets last week.<br \/>Nike dropped 4% for one of the larger losses on Wall Street. Not only does it sell a lot of shoes and apparel in China, it also makes much of it there. Last fiscal year, factories in China made 18% of its Nike brand footwear. Vietnam made 50%, and Indonesia made 27%.<br \/>Trump\u2019s tariffs are an attack on the globalization that\u2019s remade the world\u2019s economy, which helped bring down prices for products on the shelves of U.S. stores but also caused production jobs to leave for other countries.<br \/>It also adds <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-inflation-economy-trump-powell-490417656971634592bbeb3b2ade3593\">pressure on the Federal Reserve<\/a><\/span>. Investors have become nearly conditioned to expect the central bank to swoop in as a hero by slashing interest rates during downturns. <br \/>But the Fed may have less freedom to act this time around because the conditions are so much different. That\u2019s cheifly because <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/economy-consumer-spending-tariffs-c8be092ecf06a81ad79c4c8f921c7cbe\">inflation<\/a><\/span> is higher at the moment than the Fed would like. And while lower interest rates can goose the economy, they can also put upward pressure on inflation. Expectations for inflation are <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/consumer-confidence-economy-inflation-bd6ece8784efff205e2ab922bcb86958\">already swinging higher <\/a><\/span> because of Trump\u2019s tariffs, which would likely raise prices for anything imported.<br \/>\u201cThe recent tariffs will likely increase inflation and are causing many to consider a greater probability of a recession,\u201d JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, one of the most influential executives on Wall Street, wrote in his annual letter to shareholders Monday. \u201cWhether or not the menu of tariffs causes a recession remains in question, but it will slow down growth.\u201d<br \/>In the bond market, Treasury yields rallied Monday to recover some of their sharp drops from earlier weeks. Some of the big move may have been because of reduced expectations for cuts to interest rates by the Fed. Some analysts also said it could be due to investors outside of the United States wanting to pare their U.S. investments. <br \/>The yield on the 10-year Treasury jumped to 4.14% from 4.01% late Friday. <br \/>Earlier in the day, the S&amp;P 500 briefly fell more than 20% below its record set <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-market-china-asia-technology-5d60888d8ea6f1e9c7dc19e8c89833e8\">less than two months ago<\/a><\/span>. If it finishes a day below that bar, it would be a big enough drop that Wall Street has a name for it.
