Stock markets are falling dramatically and countries around the world have issued dire warnings about the global economy since Donald Trump unveiled his tariffs on trade.
But it’s easy to be overwhelmed by it all and to wonder – does this have any impact on our own personal finances?

Today has seen chaos on global stock markets, with price plunges reminiscent of the famous Black Monday crash of 1987. Back then, the causes were unclear, whereas today there’s no doubt – Donald Trump’s “liberation day” tariffs have spooked the markets.
In 1987, people feared Black Monday was a sign of a global recession. They were wrong. Are we right to have the same fears today?

Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu’s news conference has been cancelled, as we told you earlier – and now the White House has offered an explanation.
Officials say they cancelled the 7.30pm conference because this would have meant the two leaders had “two back-to-back media availabilities (the greeting in the Oval Office and the formal news conference), and they wanted to streamline things”. 
There will instead be “one big, beautiful news conference” in the Oval Office, they say.
It’s important to note that a much smaller number of approved reporters, known as the pool, will be allowed into the Oval Office to ask questions – make of that what you will.
Donald Trump is trying to get attention from countries that he hasn’t been able to achieve through negotiation, the US former ambassador to the EU has told Mark Austin<\/a> on The News Hour.
Gordon Sondland said Trump wanted to “reset the entire global relationship on trade” with his policies.
“This is going to create a lot of pain in global markets until we are through the other side,” he said.
But, he said, this was about non-tariff barriers rather than tariffs.
A non-tariff barrier is any measure that restricts international trade. This can include regulations or quotas.
Sondland said allies needed to “sit down with Trump and focus on what is stuck in his craw”.
“There are simple solutions that would cause him to significantly back off with the tariffs,” he added.
“He’s trying to get attention that he can’t seem to get through the normal process of negotiation.”
Donald Trump was due to hold a news conference with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, at around 7.30pm this evening, but we’ve just heard from the White House that the event has been cancelled.
No reason was given – but as US correspondent Mark Stone<\/a> points out, it means both leaders will avoid direct questions from the media, on tariffs or Gaza.
Netanyahu has just arrived at the White House for his meetings with Trump – making him the first world leader to get a second audience with the US president during his second term.
Sir Keir Starmer gave a speech this afternoon, setting out his government’s first policy response to Trump’s tariffs.
Speaking at a Jaguar Land Rover plant in the West Midlands, the prime minister also said the UK had to “rise together as a nation” in the face of a new era of global instability.

Donald Trump might not care about being seen playing golf as the markets crash (see our previous post) – but he is worried about rumblings within the Republican Party, our US correspondent James Matthews<\/b><\/a> says from the White House.
Bill Ackman, a Trump supporter and billionaire fund manager, has called for a pause on the tariffs, and Matthews says that “sentiment is echoed by Republicans who have found their voice in the last 72 hours”.
“There are rumblings of discontent and Trump is trying to face that down, with aggression,” Matthews says.
He notes that the markets have been something of a “spectator sport in the past hour”.
When a groundless report emerged that Trump was looking at a 90-day tariff pause, the “markets went from red to green” (read more on that in our earlier posts). 
But when it was found to be false, it went “straight to red again”.
“That gives you a sense of the volatility,” Matthews adds.
What did Donald Trump do this weekend after knocking $2.5tn off Wall Street? Play golf, of course.
The president spent the weekend in Florida, arriving last Thursday night to attend a Saudi-funded tournament at his Miami golf course. 
He stayed at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach, and played golf at two of his properties nearby. 
And he’s not worried about the optics of playing golf as the markets sink.
A White House official told our US partner network NBC News that Trump sees the Dow plummeting and market strains as a “temporary issue that will resolve itself”.
“The economy will be fine,” the official said.
Richard Branson has weighed in on the economic turmoil caused by Donald Trump’s tariffs, saying the US government can turn things around – but it “must act in the next few hours”.
In a statement on X, the Virgin boss also said this was the moment to “own up to a colossal mistake and change course”…
Donald Trump has just finished speaking in the White House, but made no mention of tariffs.
You wouldn’t have known from the US president’s words that the global markets were in turmoil – because of his trade war.
Instead, he talked up the victorious LA Dodgers in the East Room speech.
