(AP Photo\/Seth Wenig)<br \/>NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\">President Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a><\/span> fast-approaching <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-new-tariffs-liberation-day-import-taxes-118d73f50e5133ef3d9598aed6661a6c\">\u201cLiberation Day\u201d<\/a><\/span> has stock markets swinging sharply worldwide on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>On Wall Street, the S&amp;P 500 was up 0.3% in another roller-coaster day, after being down as much as 1.7% during the morning. It\u2019s coming off <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/market-rates-trump-tariffs-91a5088aa36966aaf5e0971147a66930\">one of its worst losses<\/a><\/span> of the past couple of years on Friday, and it\u2019s on track to finish the first three months of the year with a loss of nearly 5%. Slides for Tesla, Nvidia and other influential Big Tech stocks had the Nasdaq composite down 0.6%.<\/p>\n<p>Such neck-twisting swings have become routine for the U.S. stock market recently because of uncertainty about what Trump will do with <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-timeline-trade-war-trump-canada-mexico-china-a9d714eea677488ef9397547d838dbd0\">tariffs<\/a><\/span> \u2014 and by how much they will worsen <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/economy-consumer-spending-tariffs-c8be092ecf06a81ad79c4c8f921c7cbe\">inflation<\/a><\/span> and grind down <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-economy-gdp-growth-trump-tariff-9c6686a658241dbad8ebdeff632ff0ac\">growth<\/a><\/span> for economies. Wall Street\u2019s swings followed a sell-off that spanned the world earlier Monday as worries built about the effects of the tariffs that Trump says will bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index dropped 4%. South Korea\u2019s Kospi sank 3%, and France\u2019s CAC 40 fell 1.6%. <\/p>\n<p>Instead of stocks, prices strengthened for things considered safer bets when the economy is looking shaky. <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gold-price-record-high-economic-uncertainty-59ef0a740910042f488609ff471b4334\">Gold<\/a><\/span> rose again to briefly crest $3,160 per ounce.<\/p>\n<p>Prices for Treasury bonds also climbed, which in turn sent their yields down. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.24% from 4.27% late Friday and from roughly 4.80% in January. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the United States is set to begin what Trump calls \u201c <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-reciprocal-tariffs-trade-4112c661b1b82a2663a9eb0ecd6bd537\">reciprocal<\/a><\/span> \u201d tariffs, which will be tailored to match what he sees is the burden each country places on his, including things like value-added taxes. They also raised their forecast for inflation and lowered it for U.S. economic growth for the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, they now see a 35% chance of recession in the next year, up from an earlier forecast of 20%, \u201creflecting our lower growth forecast, falling confidence, and statements from White House officials indicating willingness to tolerate economic pain,\u201d according to Goldman Sachs economist David Mericle. <br \/>The AP\u2019s Seth Sutel reports stocks react to President Trump\u2019s upcoming \u201cLiberation Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the April 2 tariffs end up being less onerous than investors fear \u2014 maybe Trump includes no additional tariff increases on China, for example \u2014 stocks could rally. But if they end up being a worst-case scenario, which also gets businesses so fearful that they start cutting their workforces, something that hasn\u2019t happened so far, stocks could sink much further. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, there\u2019s also the chance that April 2 does little to clear the uncertainty. (AP Photo\/Seth Wenig)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means policy uncertainty and growth risks are likely to persist \u2014 it\u2019s a question of to what degree,\u201d Wilson wrote in a report. <\/p>\n<p>One worry is that even if Trump\u2019s tariffs end up being less harsh than feared, all the uncertainty created by them could alone cause U.S. <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/consumer-confidence-economy-inflation-bd6ece8784efff205e2ab922bcb86958\">households<\/a><\/span> and businesses to <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gold-price-record-high-economic-uncertainty-59ef0a740910042f488609ff471b4334\">freeze their spending<\/a><\/span>, which would hurt an economy that had been running at a solid pace at the close of last year.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, some familiar names were among Wall Street\u2019s hardest hit on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Tesla fell 2% to bring its loss for the year so far to 36%. It\u2019s been one of the year\u2019s worst performers in the S&amp;P 500 in large part because of fears that the <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/elon-musk-tesla-doge-protests-a07cb5f20d65d0fb4dcb3547e2b7879c\">electric-vehicle maker\u2019s brand has become too intertwined with its CEO<\/a><\/span>, Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p>Musk has been leading <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/doge-firings-layoffs-federal-government-workers-musk-d33cdd7872d64d2bdd8fe70c28652654\">U.S. government efforts to cut spending<\/a><\/span>, making him a target of growing political anger, and protests have been swarming Tesla showrooms as a result. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a sharp drop-off following a surge of roughly 90% in the weeks following November\u2019s Election Day, when the thought was that Musk\u2019s close relationship with Trump could help the company\u2019s finances. Tesla\u2019s stock is roughly back to where it was on Nov. 5. <\/p>\n<p>Other Big Tech stocks also struggled. They\u2019ve been at the center of the recent sell-off in large part because of criticism that their stock prices had become too expensive. Critics pointed to how their prices rose much faster than their already quick-growing profits in recent years. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nvidia-ai-artificial-intelligence-f72da2deff83510987a0017e61eac335\">Nvidia<\/a><\/span>, which has ridden the frenzy around <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/artificial-intelligence\">artificial-intelligence<\/a><\/span> technology to become one of Wall Street\u2019s most influential stocks, fell 1.9% to bring its loss for the year so far to 19.9%. <\/p>\n<p>On the winning side of Wall Street was Mr. Cooper, which jumped 15.7% after the home loan servicer said it\u2019s being bought by mortgage company Rocket in an <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rocket-cooper-mortgage-73a7ad2cf98f21b81cdc1d54bfa4fe8b\">all-stock deal valued at $9.4 billion<\/a><\/span>. The deal comes just weeks after Rocket <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rocket-cos-redfin-acquisition-real-estate-housing-3f982d6ce5db4da05a06e619eb19a98e\">acquired real estate listing company Redfin<\/a><\/span>, and Rocket\u2019s stock fell 8.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Warren Buffett\u2019s Berkshire Hathaway also rose 1.1% to bring its gain for the year so far to 17.4%. The famed investor said earlier this year his company is sitting on a mountain of $334.2 billion in unused cash. Such a large amount could indicate Buffett, who\u2019s famous for buying stocks when prices are low, may not see much worth purchasing in a market that critics say looks too expensive.<\/p>\n<p>In stock markets abroad, Thailand\u2019s SET lost 1.5% after a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-earthquake-bangkok-4fce87aced74b1fc0cf260fb5454d353\">powerful earthquake<\/a><\/span> centered in Myanmar rattled the region, causing widespread destruction in the country, also known as Burma, and less damage in places like Bangkok.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in Italian Thai Development, developer of a partially built 30-story high-rise office building under construction that collapsed, tumbled 26.9%.
