The US raids come after Trump warned that \u2018hell will rain down\u2019 if Houthis attacked ships in the Red Sea.<\/em>
US fighter jets have carried out a series of air raids across Yemen, killing at least 32 people after President Donald Trump warned the Houthi group not to attack ships passing through the Red Sea.
According to the latest statistics from the Houthi-run Health Ministry, at least 101 have been injured in the US air raids, said Al Jazeera\u2019s Mohammed Al Attab reporting from Sanaa.
The US raids, the most significant military action since Trump\u2019s return to power in January, came after Yemen\u2019s Houthis threatened to resume raids on Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea over Israel\u2019s blockade<\/a> on Gaza.
The US attacks, which began on Saturday and continued into the early hours of Sunday, on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, as well as areas in Saada and al-Bayda killed 32 people and wounded 101, according to the ministry of health.
Earlier, spokesperson for the ministry of health Anis al-Asbahi said that most of the casualties were \u201cchildren and women\u201d.
The victims in Saada included four children and a woman. According to Yemeni media, US forces also launched attacks in the provinces of Hajjah, Marib, Dhamar, and Taiz.
The Houthi group warned that the strikes \u201cwill not pass without response\u201d. The Houthi website slammed what it called \u201cUS-British aggression\u201d and Washington\u2019s \u201ccriminal brutality\u201d.
Trump, in a post on social media, promised to \u201cuse overwhelming lethal force\u201d and ordered Iran to \u201cimmediately\u201d cut its support.
\u201cYour time is up, and your attacks must stop, starting today. If they don\u2019t, hell will rain down upon you like nothing you have ever seen before,\u201d the US president said in a statement on Truth Social, his social media site.
\u201cI have ordered the US military today to launch a decisive and powerful military operation against the Houthi terrorists in Yemen,\u201d he said, adding that Washington \u201cwill use overwhelming lethal force until we have achieved our objective\u201d.
Trump also told Iran it needed to stop supporting the Houthis immediately. He said if Iran threatens the US, \u201cAmerica will hold you fully accountable and, we won\u2019t be nice about it!\u201d
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the attacks and said Washington had \u201cno authority\u201d to dictate its foreign policy.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told his US counterpart Marco Rubio in a phone call on Saturday that all sides should refrain from the \u201cuse of force\u201d in Yemen.
\u201cIn response to argumentation put forward by American representatives, Sergei Lavrov stressed the need for an immediate cessation of the use of force and the importance for all sides to engage in political dialogue so as to find a solution that would prevent further bloodshed,\u201d Russia\u2019s foreign ministry said on Sunday.

The Houthis, who control much of Yemen<\/a>, have yet to attack any ships despite threatening to do so last week over Israel\u2019s blockade on all food, fuel and other supplies into the Gaza Strip.
In a statement, a Houthi spokesman accused the US of overstating the threat to shipping operations to influence public opinion.
\u201cWhat the US president claims about a threat to international navigation in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait is false and misleading to international public opinion,\u201d Mohammed Abdul-Salam said.
\u201cThe maritime embargo declared by Yemen in support of Gaza is limited only to Israeli navigation until humanitarian aid is delivered to the people of Gaza, according to the ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian resistance and the enemy entity,\u201d he added.
The political bureau of the Houthis issued a separate statement, describing the attacks as a \u201cwar crime\u201d and promised to respond.
\u201cThe aggression will not go unanswered,\u201d it said. \u201cOur Yemeni armed forces are fully prepared to respond to escalation with escalation.\u201d
In Sanaa, residents said at least four air raids rocked the eastern Geraf neighbourhood in the Shuayb district, terrifying women and children in the area.
\u201cThe explosions were very strong,\u201d said Abdallah al-Alffi. \u201cIt was like an earthquake.\u201d
The Houthis have launched more than 100 attacks targeting shipping since November 2023, following Israel\u2019s war on Gaza, disrupting global commerce and setting the US military on a costly campaign to intercept missiles and drones that burned through stocks of US air defences.
The Houthis say the attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians over Israel\u2019s war with Hamas in Gaza.
Iran\u2019s other allies, Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, have been severely weakened by Israel since the start of the Gaza conflict. Syria\u2019s Bashar al-Assad, who was closely aligned with Tehran, was overthrown by rebels<\/a> in December.
But throughout, Yemen\u2019s Houthis have remained resilient and often on the offensive, sinking two vessels, seizing another and killing at least four seafarers in an offensive that disrupted global shipping, forcing companies to reroute to longer and more expensive journeys around Southern Africa.
The Houthis halted the drone and missile attacks when the Gaza ceasefire<\/a> was declared in January.
Al Jazeera\u2019s Patty Culhane, reporting from Washington, DC, said Trump was justifying the assault on Yemen to \u201cstop\u201d Houthi attacks, when the group had yet to launch any raids, despite threatening to do so.
\u201cTrump says another reason is because Houthis attacked a US military warship. But that happened when he was not president,\u201d Culhane said.
\u201cThe White House has also put out a statement, saying that before the attacks, there were 25,000 ships that transited the Red Sea annually. And that it\u2019s now down to 10,000. This shoots down the president\u2019s concept that nobody is actually transiting the region.
\u201cIt also said that US commercial ships have been attacked 145 times since 2023. And the last one was in December, again, before Trump was inaugurated.\u201d
Saturday\u2019s strikes were carried out in part by jets from the Harry S Truman aircraft carrier, which is in the Red Sea, officials said.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM), which posted images of fighters and a bomb demolishing a building compound, said \u201cprecision strikes\u201d were launched to \u201cdefend American interests, deter enemies, and restore freedom of navigation\u201d.
\u201cHouthi attacks on American ships & aircraft (and our troops!) will not be tolerated; and Iran, their benefactor, is on notice,\u201d US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth wrote on X. \u201cFreedom of Navigation will be restored.\u201d
Earlier this month, the US designated the Houthi movement as a \u201cforeign terrorist\u201d organisation<\/a>.
Nabeel Khoury, a former US diplomat, told Al Jazeera that Trump\u2019s decision to launch attacks against the Houthis is misguided and would not subdue the group.
\u201cFor our president, who came in wanting to avoid war and wanting to be a man of peace, he\u2019s going about it the wrong way. There are many paths that can be used before you resort to war,\u201d Khoury said.
\u201cIf you think that Hamas, living and fighting on a very small piece of land, totally surrounded by land, air and sea, and yet, 17 months of bombardment by the Israelis did not get rid of them, the Houthis lived in a much more rugged space, mountainous regions \u2013 it would be virtually impossible to eradicate them,\u201d he said.
