<\/a>Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s increased tariffs<\/a> on all U.S. steel<\/a> and aluminum<\/a> imports are now in effect, intensifying a campaign to reshape global trade <\/a>that has already prompted quick retaliation from Europe.
Trump\u2019s action to bulk up protections for domestic steel and aluminum producers<\/a> restores effective global tariffs<\/a> of 25 percent on all imports of the two metals, extending the duties to hundreds of downstream products made from the materials \u2014 from nuts and bolts, bulldozer blades to soda cans.
The European Commission responded immediately<\/a>, saying it would impose counter-tariffs on $28 billion worth of American goods from next month.
The countries most affected by the levies are Canada<\/a> \u2013 the biggest foreign supplier to the U.S. \u2013 Brazil<\/a>, Mexico<\/a> and South Korea<\/a>. On Wednesday morning, Canada responded with C$29.8 million ($20 billion) in retaliatory duties on U.S. products.
On Tuesday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would suspend his province\u2019s 25 percent electricity surcharge<\/a> \u2013 just hours after Trump announced steep tariffs by way of retaliation for Ford\u2019s actions<\/a>, which the president then, in turn, withdrew on an exhausting day of U-turns<\/a>.
As Trump\u2019s tariffs come into effect, he is hosting Ireland\u2019s Taoiseach<\/a>, Michael Martin<\/a>, as part of St. Patrick\u2019s Day celebrations.

Unfortunately for Musk and Trump, this seems divorced from reality when considering the latest polling from CNN\/SSRS. Per our earlier post:

While that\u2019s bad news for him, there is even worse news in the poll for DOGE head Elon Musk, who it shows is 18 points underwater, with only 35 percent having a favorable opinion of him versus 53 percent unfavorable.<\/em>
More than 60 percent of respondents believe Trump does not have the experience of judgment to make changes to the way government works.<\/em>
In remarks to reporters on the visit of the Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin, President Donald Trump said on the theme of trade: \u201cWe do have a massive deficit with Ireland because Ireland was very smart, they took our pharmaceutical companies away from presidents that didn’t know what they were doing, and it\u2019s too bad that happened.\u201d
He continued: “The Irish is smart, you\u2019re a smart people. And you took our pharmaceutical companies and other companies, through taxation, proper taxation, and they made it very, very good for companies to move over there. We had presidents and people that were involved in this and had no idea what they were doing. And we lost big segments of our economy.\u201d

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday said her government will wait for a possible resolution in the coming weeks instead of responding to U.S. tariffs on foreign supplies of steel and aluminum that came into force earlier that day.
\u201cWe will wait until April 2, and from then, we will see whether our definition of reciprocal tariffs will be applied too,\u201d she said.
