WASHINGTON \u2014 President Donald Trump<\/a> escalated his trade war with Canada on Tuesday, pledging to double his planned steel and aluminum tariffs on America’s northern neighbor after the province of Ontario said it would charge<\/a> U.S. customers more for electricity.
Trump<\/a> said he would increase from 25%<\/a> to 50% the tariffs due to take effect Wednesday for Canada only, using his authority to declare a national emergency on electricity in the affected areas.
Trump’s action came one day after Ontario said it would put a 25% fee on U.S. energy users in Minnesota, New York and Michigan. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he expected the surcharge to raise costs for those American consumers by an average of $100 a month. Ford added that “if the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely.\u201d
Trump, in a post on Truth Social<\/a>, questioned why the US. allows another country to provide electricity, even for a small area.
“Who made these decisions, and why?” Trump wrote. “And can you imagine Canada stooping so low as to use ELECTRICITY, that so affects the life of innocent people, as a bargaining chip and threat? They will pay a financial price for this so big that it will be read about in History Books for many years to come!”
Ford said Tuesday that Trump launched an \u201cunprovoked attack\u201d on Canada when he increased the steel and aluminum tariffs.
\u201cWe will not back down. We will be relentless. I apologize to the American people that President Trump decided to have an unprovoked attack on our country, on families, on jobs. And it’s unacceptable,\u201d Ford said on MSNBC.

Trump on Tuesday once again expressed his desire to see the U.S. absorbing its northern neighbor. In recent months, Trump has repeatedly suggested he wants to annex Canada and\u00a0has referred to its outgoing prime minister<\/a>\u00a0as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada” \u2212 much to the chagrin of Trudeau and many Canadians.
\u201cThe only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump overtures were panned by Canada\u2019s Prime Minister-designate\u00a0Mark Carney<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday in his first speech after winning the leadership of the governing Labor Party.
Canada \u201cnever, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape, or form,\u201d said Carney, adding that people \u201care worried about Canada\u2019s future, in the face of President Trump\u2019s threats and a more divided and dangerous world.\u201d
Unfazed, Trump wrote Tuesday on his social media post that by Canada joining the U.S., the \u201cgreatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better and stronger than ever \u2014 And Canada will be a big part of that.\u201d
\u201cThe artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World,\u201d he wrote.
Trump’s tariff tit-for-tats have rattled markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down almost<\/a> 600 points at noon Tuesday. A day prior the Dow plunged by nearly 900 points. The sell-off has accelerated as U.S. officials battled recession fears. Trump would not rule out an economic slowdown in an interview that aired over the weekend.

Trump previously announced tariffs on Canada and Mexico, some of which he has since delayed. Trump also delayed tariffs on automakers until April 2, effectively halting much of his trade agenda for at least a month. Trump plans to unveil reciprocal tariffs on nations that charge the U.S. fees on the same date.
