Some donned signs displaying the Canadian maple leaf.<br \/>A few wore robes reminiscent of The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale, a dystopian novel in which\u00a0women\u00a0are subjugated by the governing regime.<br \/>Others carried signs comparing U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration to that of Nazi Germany.<br \/>Protesters locked arms as eight minutes of silence was observed.<br \/>In a message addressed to Trump, Vice-President JD Vance and Trump ally Elon Musk, protest organizer Ana\u00efs Barbeau-Lavalette denounced the U.S. administration.<strong> \u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\u201cYou are not kings. We are not handmaids,\u201d she said.<br \/>Sharing the stage with Barbeau-Lavalette, fellow organizer at M\u00e8res au Front, Laure Waridel, took aim at the U.S. government&#8217;s rollback on women&#8217;s reproductive rights and treatment of the country\u2019s neighbours.<br \/>\u201cShame on you for your treatment of\u00a0women,\u201d she said, referring to the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s overturning the constitutional right to abortion in 2022.<br \/>\u201cShame on you for your betrayal of your friends and allies,\u201d Waridel added, accusing the Trump administration of \u201csiding with murderers and despots\u201d and undermining democracy.<br \/>\u201cYou can try to intimidate us with us with trade wars, (but) we\u2019ll never become your 51<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0state,\u201d she said and called for Canadians to resist the rise of the American far-right authoritarianism and to boycott American products.<br \/>Elsewhere, protesters demonstrated in front the of U.S. consulates in Quebec City as well as the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa. Protests were also held in Sherbrooke, Joliette, Victoriaville and Saguenay, Que.<br \/>American-born Jill Oviatt was one of the protesters braving the frigid temperature in\u00a0Montreal. Wearing a Canada toque, she said she felt the need to take to the streets and stand up for her adopted country.<br \/>\u201cI want to protect Canada, not just protect the United States \u2026 from what is clearly a power grab in trying to take over this wonderful, beautiful country,\u201d she said, holding up a sign that called Donald Trump and Elon Musk fascists and compared them to ticks.<br \/>\u201cI am here today because there\u2019s an attack on\u00a0women, there\u2019s an attack on minorities, there\u2019s an attack on people who aren\u2019t billionaires,\u201d Oviatt said.<br \/>Wearing a pussyhat, Caroline Plaat pointed to the sign she was holding to describe what message she wanted to send: &#8220;Ta yeule Trump,&#8221; it read in French, which translates to &#8220;shut up, Trump.&#8221;<br \/>Plaat said she was motivated to come out and be among others who want to resist what the Trump administration represents.<br \/>&#8220;I&#8217;ve never felt more threatened.
