(AP Photo\/Ben Curtis, File)<br \/>NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) \u2014 The U.S. State Department on Sunday ordered nonemergency government personnel to leave South Sudan\u2019s capital as tension escalates because of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-sudan-tension-violence-fighting-upper-nile-c0083aec9f62e325bbf53eef94638e8c\">fighting in the north<\/a><\/span>.<br \/>The travel advisory issued on Sunday stated that fighting was ongoing and that \u201cweapons are readily available to the population.\u201d<br \/>An armed group clashed with the country\u2019s army on Tuesday, leading to the arrests of two government ministers and a deputy army chief allied to former rebel turned Vice President Riek Machar.<br \/>Machar\u2019s home was surrounded by the army as his supporters said that the arrests were threatening the country\u2019s peace agreement.<br \/>South Sudan descended into a civil war from 2013 to 2018, during which more than 400,000 people were killed. President Salva Kiir and Machar, his rival, signed a peace agreement in 2018 that is still in the process of implementation.<br \/>On Friday, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-sudan-un-chopper-fighting-nasir-db1ec0bdea98864b48a61b17f0092ee6\">an attack on a U.N helicopter<\/a><\/span> that was on an evacuation mission in the north complicated the security situation and a U.N rights body said that it was \u201cconsidered a war crime.\u201d<br \/>The U.N Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan on Saturday said that the violence in the north and tension in Juba, the capital, was \u201cthreatening to derail\u201d South Sudan\u2019s peace agreement.<br \/>\u201cWe are witnessing an alarming regression that could erase years of hard-won progress.
