It\u2019s a fitting ending to a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-markets-tariffs-rates-autos-1e09507d9731e30b315f91e6a178f7e9\">brutal week<\/a><\/span> of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-reciprocal-imports-tax-trade-economy-54c0a26687dc96157d96229068894720\">scary swings<\/a><\/span> dominated by worries about the U.S. economy and <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-markets-rates-tariffs-trump-59d3601d30cce06043644c471a60e31d\">uncertainty<\/a><\/span> about what <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\">President Donald Trump<\/a><\/span> will do with <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-reciprocal-imports-tax-trade-economy-54c0a26687dc96157d96229068894720\">tariffs<\/a><\/span>. <br \/>The S&amp;P 500 was edging up by 0.1% in afternoon trading, but that was only after flipping between an earlier gain of 0.6% and loss of 1.3%. It\u2019s coming off <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-markets-tariffs-rates-autos-1e09507d9731e30b315f91e6a178f7e9\">a punishing stretch<\/a><\/span> where it swung at least 1%, up or down, in each of the last six days, and it\u2019s on track for its worst week <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-markets-fed-inflation-recession-typhoon-579d2e507f4a07d6667404a1e2eed14c\">since September<\/a><\/span>. <br \/>The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 110 points, or 0.3%, as of 12:55 p.m., and the Nasdaq composite was basically flat. <br \/>Much of Wall Street\u2019s focus was on the job market, where the U.S. Labor Department said in a highly anticipated report that <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-economy-jobs-unemployment-tariffs-immigrants-fed-eed80fafbb4ffb7edcb5b0cb8bb5fa14\">employers added<\/a><\/span> 151,000 more jobs last month than they cut. That was slightly below economists\u2019 expectations, but it was an acceleration from <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jobs-economy-inflation-federal-reserve-trump-tariffs-b4d858e84afc2ae97f9c011e8243941a\">January\u2019s hiring<\/a><\/span>. <br \/>U.S. stocks have been struggling, and the S&amp;P 500 has dropped roughly 6.5% from its <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-market-china-asia-technology-5d60888d8ea6f1e9c7dc19e8c89833e8\">all-time high set last month<\/a><\/span> on worries that the U.S. economy\u2019s growth may be slowing. <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-markets-earnings-economy-fed-cb7171a5bb3bc3d64c9247454d753d06\">Recent, discouraging surveys<\/a><\/span> have shown souring confidence for U.S. businesses and households because of uncertainty around Trump\u2019s tariffs, but economists weren\u2019t sure if that had translated into real pain for the economy and job market. <br \/>While Friday\u2019s jobs data did come in close to expectations, economists warned of concerning details underneath the surface that could imply trouble ahead. The number of people working part time who would rather be full time rose 10% in February from January, for example.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market might breathe a sigh of relief that the labor market was still looking healthy, but a deeper dive shows that spring could be a more challenging season,\u201d said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management. <br \/>The whiplash actions from the White House on <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-reciprocal-imports-tax-trade-economy-54c0a26687dc96157d96229068894720\">tariffs<\/a><\/span> \u2014 first <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-mexico-canada-b19e004dddb579c373b247037e04424b\">placing them<\/a><\/span> on trading partners and then <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-trump-economy-mexico-canada-bfed103a11a2a71d8353350f94c78814\">exempting some<\/a><\/span> and then <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-trump-economy-mexico-canada-bfed103a11a2a71d8353350f94c78814\">doing it again<\/a><\/span> \u2014 have raised uncertainty <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-markets-rates-tariffs-trump-59d3601d30cce06043644c471a60e31d\">for businesses<\/a><\/span>. <br \/>That sparked fears that businesses might freeze in response to what they have called \u201cchaos\u201d and pull back on hiring. U.S. households, meanwhile, are bracing for much higher inflation because of tariffs, which is <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/consumer-confidence-conference-board-economy-spending-4ec3430138e6d872a6dae273e212edd1\">weakening their confidence<\/a><\/span> and could <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-markets-fed-inflation-recession-typhoon-579d2e507f4a07d6667404a1e2eed14c\">hold back their spending<\/a><\/span>. That would sap more energy from <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/economy-tariffs-trump-inflation-production-growth-86a09ee9948419d066c4b39959e32cd3\">the economy<\/a><\/span>. <br \/>Trump said Friday he wants tariffs to bring jobs back to the United States, and he gave no indication more certainty is imminent for financial markets. \u201cThere will always be changes and adjustments,\u201d he said in comments from the Oval Office.<br \/>\u201cThere could be some disturbance,\u201d Trump said about the effect on the economy before saying, \u201cI solved a little bit of that\u201d by <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-canada-mexico-china-lutnick-2b269614084027a4894aa14f3dc16227\">giving a one-month reprieve<\/a><\/span> on tariffs for Mexican and Canadian imports for automakers.<br \/>In the bond market, Treasury yields were also jostling up and down. The 10-year Treasury yield fell as low as 4.22% after the jobs report before climbing to 4.29%, up from 4.28% late Thursday. It\u2019s been generally sinking since January, when it was nearing 4.80%, as investors have ratcheted back their expectations for the U.S. economy\u2019s growth. <br \/>The yield on the two-year Treasury note has also been easing recently, underscoring building expectations that <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/federal-reserve-minutes-inflation-ad359f208bdf9d3861768e748f9330b7\">the Federal Reserve<\/a><\/span> will cut its main interest rate at least two or three times this year in order to prop up a slowing economy. <br \/>Lower interest rates would help U.S. borrowers, but they could also make inflation worse. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said again Friday that the central bank\u2019s plan for now is to wait and see on rates, after it paused its sharp cuts that carried through the end of last year.<br \/>\u201cThe costs of being cautious are very very low\u201d right now, he said. \u201cThe economy is fine. It doesn\u2019t need us to do anything really. We can wait, and we should wait.\u201d<br \/>On Wall Street, Hewlett Packard Enterprises slumped 15.4% after reporting profit for the latest quarter that fell just short of analysts\u2019 expectations. CEO Antonio Neri acknowledged that \u201cwe could have executed better in some areas in the quarter,\u201d and the company gave a forecast for revenue in the current quarter that was weaker than expected. <br \/>Costco sank 7.3% after the retailer reported a weaker profit for the latest quarter than expected. <br \/>They helped offset Walgreens Boots Alliance, which rallied 7.7% after the pharmacy and drug store chain agreed to be <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/walgreens-buyout-private-sycamore-drugstore-4f4b33c34e61fe0e1b111107db4830fa\">acquired by private equity firm Sycamore Partners<\/a><\/span>. The buyout would take the struggling chain private for the first time since 1927 and give it more flexibility to make changes to improve its business without worrying about Wall Street\u2019s reaction. <br \/>Broadcom rose 6.8% after delivering stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. The chip company also gave a forecast for upcoming revenue that topped analysts\u2019 expectation, thanks in part to strong demand for its <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/artificial-intelligence\">artificial-intelligence<\/a><\/span> offerings. <br \/>In stock markets abroad, German stocks dropped 1.8% to give back some of the big gains from earlier in the week following a seismic shift in its policy on debt.
