I didn\u2019t want him to go but his heart was set on it. He wanted to help Ukraine.\u201d<br \/>The confirmation of Wilton&#8217;s death comes as <a href=\"\/topic\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> told reporters at the White House that he wanted Ukraine to supply rare earth metals in exchange for American military and financial aid.<br \/>&#8220;We&#8217;re telling Ukraine they have very valuable rare earths,&#8221; Mr Trump said. &#8220;We&#8217;re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they&#8217;re going to secure what we&#8217;re giving them with their rare earths and other things.&#8221;<br \/>Earlier, a senior eastern Ukrainian separatist who had organised combat units to fight against his own country was reportedly killed following an explosion in northwest<a href=\"\/topic\/moscow\"> Moscow<\/a>.<br \/>At least five people were wounded or killed after what has been reported as a bomb detonated at the Alye Parusa residential complex in the capital.<br \/>An 18-year-old British volunteer who enlisted to help defend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a> was killed by a Russian drone just minutes into his first mission, according to a report.<br \/>James Wilton, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/huddersfield\">Huddersfield<\/a>, travelled to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a> aged 17 and with no prior military experience, where he was reportedly given a crash training course <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/james-wilton-russian-drone-attack-ukraine-war-b2691633.html\">by Ukrainian instructors<\/a>.<br \/>But his first mission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/pokrovsk-ukraine-map-soldiers-capture-b2689711.html\">on Ukraine\u2019s eastern front<\/a> on 23 July 2024 was also to be his last, after James and his comrade found themselves being hunted by multiple Russian drones in an open field with no cover to run for.<br \/>\u201cI\u2019ll never get over this. The available figures suggest Russian forces suffered roughly 96 casualties per sq km of territory seized,\u201d it said in the latest assessment.<br \/>US shipments of weapons into Ukraine were briefly paused in recent days before resuming over the weekend, four people briefed on the matter told Reuters.<br \/>The shipments restarted after the White House pulled back on its initial assessment to stop all aid to Ukraine, two of the sources said.
